Thoughts of THE Network's Draft Coverage (1 Viewer)

I only saw about 10 minutes of ESPN's coverage of the draft meanwhile I taped the entire draft from THE NFL network, even though I tuned in a number of times on Saturday and today. To me they had too many people at their round-table and for sure Marshall Faulk needs to take a course of public speaking. He was louder than he is on the studio shows of NFL Access, he seemed that he didn't really do his homework and to me he seemed like a square peg in a round hole.

The worst analyst of all time is Jerry Rice on Sirius. The dude couldn't count to 10 without say ahh, umm and y'know twelve times.

Faulk, was simply playing devils advocate. I think he knew what he was talking about. It would have been boring having 3-4 dudes all saying the same thing. I give Faulk credit, he will be criticized just like you are doing and that is fine. But Faulk is essentially taking one for the team, allowing the other dudes to look smarter while mixing up the pot. That is TOUGH job, and it take a real man of genius to accept that roll.

Just like on PTI, where 2-3 guys will say the same thing and 1 will go the other way, just for TVs sake.

Or when Kornheiser and Wilbon play good cop bad cop.

Marshall didn't bother me that much. But Jamie Dukes schtick really started to get on my nerves after awhile, almost like he should be on MTV2 covering the draft.

Side note: I thought Mooch was really good, he surprisingly had some good one-liners throughout the coverage.

Overall, still better than watching Chris Berman on ESPN, although I did miss Mel Kiper a little bit.

I was annoyed ny Dukes' segment. Usually he isn't that bad, he has balls to say stuff about players, but his little skits were very lame.

Mooch was great, he is very interesting to listen to and has a great coaches perspective.

Mike Mayock is very smart, but kind of acts like a know it all. He doesn;t want to be told he may not be right.

Deion is too much. Very annoying, he is like a more religious Irvin.

i clicked back and forth...to actually gauge the difference

NFL Network vs ESPN

personality:

ESPN >> NFL Network

Panel:

NFLNet > ESPN

draft knowledge:

NFLNet > ESPN

Insider News

NFLNet >> ESPN

Player Breakdown:

NFLNet > ESPN

Whatever it was NFLNet did better except for the first category.

Edit: ESPN was allowed player interview immediately after they were drafted. That was cool. NFL Network interviewed SOME players much later after the players jumped through the media hoops. I think this was a deal NFL and ESPN has had for awhile. Its also like throwing ESPN a bone.

and that's just it, I don't tune in for the personalities. NFL network hands down. :football:

Deion: :football: So tell me Mrs Adrian Peterson's Mom, how does it feel to sit here after all these picks have gone by and your boy is still sitting here? It's gonna be okay. Everything is gonna work out alright! God bless. Back to you guys in the studio. :lmao:

:X

I was only able to view ESPN....and it looked like a lot of pissing matches with every segment.

One of the best lines came early on day two when Michael Smith (I think that is his last name)....was commenting on what he thought the record of the Raiders would be.

Apparently at some point someone on that panel said "Why is it that yesterday you said the Raiders would be 8-8".

Smith responded with, "I never said the Raiders would be 8-8....no one in America heard me say that I thought the Raiders would be 8-8 yesterday".

Almost like it was rehersed.....Trey Wingo, Mark May, and Salisbury steak brain all chimed in unison,

" I HEARD IT!"

:football:

I will spooge in my pants the day that Steve Young says anything good about any position in all of sports other than QB. He's pretty much worn thin with me.

I really liked Faulk and a number of times on day 1 after a last minute trade he nailed the position the team was to draft. I flicked to ESPN only once or twice. There was no comparison. Faulk and Mayock were a great team. Mooch added as well.

I agree that Dukes is annoying. He was on local radio here in Atlanta until he got the NFLN gig about 6 mos ago. He was annoying on the radio at times too but you could always count on him to talk about meat and potatoes rather than TO or whatever BS most sports radio analysts key in on.

I like it when the fella on THE NFL Network was saying that the Ravens would be smart to select Troy Smith and Mayock cut him off and said that WON'T happen because he knows the Ravens are taking some small school QB who is perfect for them.

End result...the Ravens chose Troy Smith, I believe in the 5th round.

Take that smarty pants!

:D I love the guy, but cringe every time he speaks....I think he would mangle his own name if he was interviewing himself.

It seemed to be that the few times that I switched over to ESPN, Chris Mortensen was getting his ### handed to him. He was stuttering and mumbling when his opinions were challenged. He looked like a deer in the headlights. He normally has his #### together, even if he's full of ####. Delivery has a lot to do with persuasion and he looked bad. At one point he said that Merriman would be suspended for 4 years and Kolber had to bail him out.

From graphics to commentary, NFLN was much better than last year . . . I did missed Chavous . . .

that being said, I had NO need to switch to ESPN (I did watch ESPN2 with Hoge) . . .

I am happy to say I did not hear Chris Bermans voice once in two days.
;) :lmao:  I am at the point where I can't even take him for 5 mins let alone a whole day .. good thing I have NFL network. As for NFL Network, the only poor part imo was Dukes segment by himself (it was so bad) ... I like him on a panel discussion as he is not afraid to speak up and take a different view point and says negatives about a guy not just sings a player's praises. Mooch was awesome. Liked Mayock and Faulk also. Actually found Eisen a little annoying for the first time as he looks like he is doing a bit of Bermism with play on words and like Berman he sounds like an idiot when he does it.

I like Mayock, but that was pretty damn funny.

I liked how NFLN actually talked about the picks after they happened in rounds 2-7. A couple times I flipped to ESPN on a commercial break and they hadn't gotten to the last 10-15 picks.

I think Mayock has it in for Adam Schefter, he had the Ravens comment and followed that up by dissing him for breaking the Moss story and acting like it was a big story... which I think most NFL fans and critics/analyst would agree it was huge. Luckily they had Rich there to break it up before they got in to a fight.

I wonder why ESPN doesn't use Kirk Herbstreit, I think he is more knowledgable about college football players than anyone else they have cept Mel. I think he would be good at it and he doesn't seem so over opinionated as some of the other guys they have yapping there. just mho

I did record the ESPN HD version over the NFLN version, but only due to the HD part :-), oh yeah I am sooooo glad no big mouth Michael Irving this year! <--- That may have been uncalled for, but announcers/ESPN and football were all part of the topic, so I thought it was ok.

Tale of the tape

Crew:

ESPN's Berman trumps NFLN's Eisen in an otherwise push.

Personality:

Tie. While the ESPN guys might be funnier, sometimes their jokes go horribly wrong. awkwarrrrrd. Mayock's lisp is annoying and he takes himself too seriously.

Display/Production:

Edge to ESPN. As far as the outer panel, neither have it as good as it could be. Odd colors on the NFLN, too much info on ESPN. ESPN owns in the video packages. Obviously they have more film tape rights, or so it seems, which makes for the best highlights for a given player. ESPN's music is epic, while NFLN has none.

Insider News:

Slight, slight edge to NFLN. NFL has all-knowing Adam Schefter. ESPN should have Mort reporting like him. Outisde of the draft, NFLN seems to break news more often, but naturally both got the info at the same time during the draft.

Knowledge:

Again a slight edge to NFLN. Mayock's lisp might be annoying, and his delivery isn't as good as Kiper's, but he's got the most solid knowledge IMO. Basically ESPN's only great evaluator is Kiper. Jaws is okay, but they would be better off bringing in McShay too, as opposed to Mort.

Player Breakdown:

NFLN > ESPN. The breakdowns from NFLN seemed to show much more of the All-star games and combine drills. Probly a better idea, but you gotta wonder if it's because they don't have the rights to other game film.

Overall:

I suppose I'd give the slight overall edge to ESPN now. NFL Network will never have Kiper, but they should be able to pull their production together in the coming years to make a far more appealing show for bigger NFL fans. I imagine ESPN will gear their show more and more to casual fans and will continue to be the most watched (As long as the NFLN is not as widely available).

Bottom Line:

NFL needs some epic music like ESPN.

NFL Network >>> ESPN

The only time I watched ESPN was when the NFL Network was taking a commercial break.

I wonder why ESPN doesn't use Kirk Herbstreit, I think he is more knowledgable about college football players than anyone else they have cept Mel.
He also picked Miami to win the Championship this past year. :lmao:
If they based knowledge on how any of these guys picked anything other than their nose, they would all be out of a job. Kirk does alot of football and personally I think he is one of the best out there, again that is my opinion only and obviously not ESPN's.

I spent the majority of the draft on NFLN, but did switch back and forth a little...

Berman really is unbearable. I mean, the second the camera panned to him and he opened his mouth, I had to change the channel. Deion is also pretty awful. I was overjoyed when it was time for him to leave the set. Jamie Dukes was kind of annoying, too. I must have missed the parts where Faulk struggled. He really seemed to be doing ok to me. I think I prefer Kiper to Mayock.

NFLN was far superior in their coverage of the more recent picks, especially beyond the first 1-2 rounds. This has always been a big problem for me while watching ESPN...

NFL Network OWNS ESPN on all levels.

Too bad that Dukes guy is around. For someone so obnoxious and infatuated with himself, you'd think he'd be part of ESPN, not NFLN.
