Thoughts on Flex Players (1 Viewer)

OMG! Ponies!

Footballguy
i played in a PPR league (with return yards) last year where the starting requirements were as follows:

1 QB

1 RB

1 WR

1 TE

5 RB/WR/TE Flex

Personally, I loved it and the freedom it allowed an owner to create his/her team in whatever way they desired. But there were grumblings from other league members that it cut down on trading and player movement. Although i didn't see any evidence of that.

Have any thoughts on this? Something you would enjoy? Something you would hate?

here is what we have in our by-laws

1QB 1-3RB 2-5WR 1-2 TE 3 Flex (Flex RB WR or TE) 1PK 1DT 10 total weekly starters (although you have flex options you will not be able to start greater than 3 total RBs or 2 total TE’s) You could however start as many as 5 WR.

i dislike leagues with lots of flex positions as it eliminates a great deal of strategy in the draft with regard to choices/bye weeks/back ups/etc. .

on the contrary, i enjoy leagues with lots of non-flex starting positions. instead of start 9 or start 10, why not start 14 or 15 positions? that introduces strategy in the draft, and everyone finds themselves in the same boat with regards to fielding teams of having different strategies on where to keep depth.

Not everyone will like your league settings, but it only matters what the people in your league think.\

Ask everyone in your league what their preference is and why they think it is better.

Preface the request with the fact some owners will not get their way, but you are trying to get a feel for the leages desires and the best system with their reasons.

The leagues I run are

1 QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1 TE, K, 2 DB, 4 IDP flex

.75 Rec, All TDs 7, 10/25/40 yards per point for R,R/P/Ret

4 Sck, Int, FF 3 FR, 2 PD, .7 T, .3 AT

i like zealots - 7 spots = 2-3 rb 2-4 wr 1-2 te

also like our local leagues because we can start 4 rb

3 leagues (12 team):

2 rb

2 wr

2 rb/wr

1 te

1 league (8 team):

2 wr/te

4 rb/wr

less flex = more trades

more flex = more imortance on draft and free agent adds

i personally like leagues where you can start alot of rb, and the qb score high . no ppr or .25 ppr .

run 3 leagues

league 1 starts

1-QB, 2-RBs, 3-WR/TEs, 1-flex

other 2 leagues starts

1-QB, 2-RBs, 2-WRs, 1-TE, 2-flex

I'm on the other side of the fence with this, I think the more flex positions you have the greater the strategy. Flex = options for your starting lineup. I think 5 is a bit much, but it allows a lot of flexibility when building your team. The league can have some unique teams that are RB heavy, WR heavy or even TE heavy, depending on draft strategy. Deeper, flexible rosters also add a little more in-season strategy when it comes to setting weekly lineups. I'm sure we've all been in the position where our 3rd RB looks like a better choice than our #2 WR some weeks but we can't start him. A set up like this would allow you to.
