Thoughts on T. Scheffler this week... (1 Viewer)

Wonder what the thoughts are on him. Cutler seems to be looking for him a lot. Will that continue this week?>

It may not necessarily continue this week, as even the best TEs are never a lock to produce every week, but do consider it the beginning of a trend. Scheffler looked very good in preseason and pretty much everyone was expecting good things from him out of the gate. But he looked good in preseason with Cutler throwing to him, so he was a disappointment early on. He and Plummer never seemed to find a rhythm. Look for him to be one of Cutler's favorite targets for a long time. I'd be very surprised if he's NOT top 10 next season and I could see him cracking the top 5.

Add to thatguy's comment, I read somewhere that Cutler and Scheffler are locker mates in Denver and room mates on the road. That could create the beginning of a nice chemistry between the two for the remainder of this year and into future years.

Tony also had some drops early in the season that seemed to test his confidence. He disappeared for awhile, then he made some really nice catches in one of the home games, I cant' remember which one. Then he disappeared again, and now he's back. Perhaps he's finally getting used to the speed of the NFL game, and it's perfect timing because he and Cutler have great chemistry.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the insight. For what it's worth, I own Scheffler in my dynasty league as a backup to Crumpler. I'm considering trading Crumpler in the offseason because I have that much confidence in Scheff's ability to step up and become a stud. What he does over the next 3 games will of course have a lot of say in whether or not I actually decide to unload Alge

I also like WR Brandon marshall. He may start if Rod Smith retires or his role diminishes.
I'm with you as I also own Marshall in my dynasty. He's definitely a playmaker, though he seems a bit raw at this point. He's dropped a few easy balls, including a key drop last week. That said, as much as I love Rod, I'd love to see Marshall's role increased in these last 3 games. Out with the old, in with the new. If he does in fact live up to the hype (and his talent, which is obvious), Denver's offense might just become potent again, with Cutler, Walker, Marshall, Scheffler, and Bell (or whoever else they decide to plug in).

It seems, from watching, that Cutler is always looking for him.... Will he start, or is Alexander playing and startingl... Curious because deciding between him, McMichael, and D.Clark...

I'm leaning toward starting him this week in my Wildcard playoff. I also have Des Clark and with Grossman waffling so badly I thing Schef is a better bet.

Scheffler has terrific athleticism and as a few in this thread have already said, he and Cutler seem to have timing and trust. Also important to note - Scheffler broke free when Cutler was scrambling - something that is sure to happen frequently with Cutler's playing style. If Scheffler is "tuned in" to Cutler when he's on the run, that's a recipe for more big plays.

Scheffler is the easy pick if you are looking to replace Ben Watson this week.

I have a waiver bid on Scheffler. I'm planning to start him over Kellen Winslow Jr. if I land him.
I'm in same boat as you only I already got Scheff. Sorely tempted to bench KWJr. The normally consistant 10-11 pt Winslow has been MIA the last few weeks. And vs. Bal. is no picnic.I think my final decision will be based on Alexander. If he is downgraded to Doubtful or Out, I think Scheff might be the definite sneaky play.

That's because:A) the offense playcalling has improvedB) Charlie Frye isnt in there checking down to the soulja on every other play.

this is a great point. Sheff ran to the back of the end zone when Cutler was running around a bit in SD which resulted in an easy TD pass. There's definitely the potential for some good chemistry. One of Denver's problems IMO is that besides Walker they've got very little athleticism/skill in their starting lineup (with Alexander/Rod Smith). I think over the next few weeks you are going to see more of Sheff and Marshall. These guys are athletic playmakers and are the future of this offense along with Cutler and Walker. This could end up being a nice core for the next few years.....

Stephen Alexander (ribs) is expected to play in Week 15.The Broncos' starting tight end had the wind knocked out of him last Sunday. Alexander had one catch for 16 yards in the loss to San Diego.Source: Denver Post

I think it goes even further than that - they are room mates in Denver and very good friends as well and Cutler has been throwing balls to him since he arrived in Denver. There is always the comfort of a new QB throwing to the guys he threw to on the practice squad for the first week which usually diminishes as he practices with the first team - in this case Scheffler and Cutler will improve as they both work with the rest of the first team for the balance of this year and for many years to come.

Alexander's never really been a receiveing TE from what I can remember. Wouldn't it make sense that Scheff would be in the game on 3rd&longs and redzone possessions where the big points are found? They'll probably run a lot of 2TE sets inside the 10 anyway.Alexander playing scares me a little, but everything else seems like this guy could break out for the rest of the year.KWII hasn't done jack for me for 4-5 weeks. I almost think its a better bet to go with this guy the rest of the way unless you have Gates/Gonzo/Shockey/Heap

Got DesClark and think the exact same thing...

One thing I just noticed as Im strongly considering picking up Scheff this week (esp w/ the conditions Davis will be in), is that in week 13, Alexander had 2 catches for 16 and a TD to Scheff's 1/15. Which makes me think, are we blowing this game out of proportion?

I also noticed Scheff's 2 TD's were both on 1st down and outside the 10. Alexanders the prior week was on a 2nd and 7 from the 7.

I guess there's no real answer to that besides waiting and seeing. Makes me a little more uneasy though.

Alexander is still listed as questionable though

With the high advisory wind conditions in Seattle, I'm strongly considering a move for Scheffler.

However, one of his TD's last week was a ball that should have been picked, but was tipped (by him) and caught. Without the fortuitous tip, would there be as much discussion on him?

There are very few concepts in fantasy football abused more than the "<QB> seems to look for <TE/WR> alot."

According to the Football Guys data on this very site, Scheffler has 9 total targets over the past two weeks, aka, during the early days of the Jay Cutler era. That total is good for 15th among tight ends, not only behind Winslow and Crumpler, but also behind household names such as Kris Mangum, Joe Klopfenstein, Chris Baker, Randall Williams, and Ben Utecht.

He had a multi-TD game. That's it. It was nice, but to suggest that Scheffler is just going to take off now because of one game and because their lockers are next to each other is a bit of a reach when you look at the actual numbers.

My point here..... I don't want to find myself getting blinded by one good week. I am curious as to how much he will be playing (if Alexander plays). Do they split snaps 50/50... Denver homers here..... I'm going to play him since my other options aren't good either.... Trying to figure what I should expect!

Over the last 2 weeks Scheffler's had the second most targets on the team behind Walker. He was inactive the week or two prior to that.

He got 5 targets to Alexander's 2 last week, 4 to Alexander's 2 the week before.

Brandon Marshall had 6 targets last week.

There's been a changing of the guard for the Broncos.

I'm starting Scheffler this week against the Cardinals in hopes of another TD.

What is Stephen Alexander's contract status? Do the Broncos intend to keep him on the roster next year, or will the starting job be Scheffler's? I have a chance to grab Scheffler in my keeper league and stash him on the end of my roster for next year, but I don't want to do that if he is just going to be a platooning TE with Alexander next year. I have better options to keep than that.

Those targets are misleading though...Cutler will only throw to Walker if forced by the coaches, often his targets to Walker are throw aways, too. However, Scheffler will always get a long look by Cutler on virtually every passing play. Cutler wants to throw to Scheffler, they're best friends and have spent their careers working together, Walker is the odd man out here.

Scheffler was one of the biggest values in dynasty drafts this season, IMO. He normally went after Klopfenstein & could be had in the 3rd round of most rookie drafts. He reminds me a LOT of Tony Gonzalez.

Also, Cutler will only add to Scheffler's value. Young QBs generally love their TEs & Cutler is no exception. This may sound crazy, but it wouldn't surprise me if Scheffler ends up as TE1 in '08.

Re: targets, I think the odd man out now is Smith, Walker will be out there and he'll get his (whether they're "quality" or not). I don't think Walker's targets come at the expense of Scheffler, Marshall's may, and Smith's and Alexander's definitely do come at the expense of Scheffler.

Alexander is now a game time decision and Smith looks old. Good as chance as any for Scheffler this week.

I also like WR Brandon marshall. He may start if Rod Smith retires or his role diminishes.
Most people don't know this but it's been typical since Marshall got healthy and grasped the offense for Rod and Marshall to go in and out in replacement of each other. And it's been reported by the DP and RMN that Rod will be #3 WR next year with Marshall being #2.
