Below is a three round mock draft that I did. Feel free to comment on the picks, but I might disagree.
The mock drafts I have seen are looking more and more alike so I tried to go against the grain on some picks such as having Crabtree go to the Chiefs and Moreno go to Jets. In the end, I'll probably be off on most of the picks, but probably no worse then most of the other mock drafts currently out there.
-1st Round-
1. Detroit – Matt Stafford, QB – Georgia
This is probably the Lions best chance to get a potential franchise QB. If the Lions are smart, they’ll draft a QB or LT here. Even if Aaron Curry were a sure fire stud, elite linebackers simply don’t have as much impact on a game that an elite QBs, LTs, and DEs do. Plus they traded for Julian Peterson.
2. St. Louis – Jason Smith, OT – Baylor
It’s no secret the Rams coveted top offensive tackle Jake Long in last year’s draft. Given that and the release of Orlando Pace, the Rams will almost certainly take Smith or Eugene Monroe in this year’s draft.
3. Kansas City – Michael Crabtree, WR – Texas Tech
Almost every mock draft has Aaron Curry here, but Scott Pioli and Todd Haley could very well select Crabtree or one of the elite offensive tackles with this pick. Linebackers have poor position value and Curry in particular lacks elite pass rushing skills. Pioli and Haley both came from teams with two elite wide receivers so Crabtree makes a lot of sense, especially if the Chiefs trade Tony Gonzalez.
4. Seattle – Eugene Monroe, OT – Virginia
Walter Jones is 35 and nearing the end of his career. Finding his replacement needs to be a priority for the Seahawks. Crabtree is also a possibility if he is available since Fitzgerald was still taken 3rd overall despite not breaking 4.6 in the 40.
5. Cleveland – Aaron Curry, ILB/OLB – Wake Forest
The Browns only managed 17 sacks last season despite being in the same division as the Steelers and the Bengals, two teams that were among the worst at protecting the passer. Because of this, the Browns could select Brian Orakpo over Curry. However, Curry is the most likely pick assuming the media's big boards are relatively accurate.
6. Cincinnati – Brian Orakpo, DE - Texas
While LT may be a bigger need, both Michael Oher and Andre Smith would probably be reaches at this point. It’s not as if the Bengals don’t desperately need a pass rusher. Like the Browns, the Bengals also only managed to get 17 sacks this season.
7. Oakland – Andre Smith, OT - Alabama
While the Raiders recently signed Khalid Barnes, they only signed him to a one year contract. Consequently, the Raiders probably won’t be afraid to draft an OT in the 1st round, especially given the fact that Barnes gave up the most sacks among LTs in 2008. Because Al Davis has an enormous ego, he may overlook big time questions regarding Andre Smith’s work ethic and draft Smith since he was considered an elite prospect earlier this year.
8. Jacksonville – Jeremy Maclin, WR – Missouri
The release of Matt Jones leaves the Jaguars awfully thin at WR. Of the Jaguars nine picks since 2000, three have been spent on WRs and one has been spent on a TE while none have been spent on offensive linemen. At this point, I’d venture to say it’s more likely the Jaguars take a WR then OT. Of course, B.J. Raji is always a possibility.
9. Green Bay – Everette Brown, OLB/DE – Florida State
Despite having talented OLB/DE Aaron Kampman, the Packers still finished with just 27 sacks last season finishing 25th in the NFL in total sacks. Pairing the explosive Brown with Kampman could give the Packers a dynamite pass rush that could cause Jay Cutler to regret leaving Denver. B.J. Raji is also a possibility here, but Ryan Pickett is a capable NT and won’t turn 30 until midseason.
10. San Francisco – Mark Sanchez, QB – USC
The 49ers tried to sign Kurt Warner and were rumored as a team trying to acquire Cutler. This tells me the 49ers aren’t overly happy with Shaun Hill or Alex Smith. If the 49ers don’t take a QB here, I think they’ll draft someone such as Pat White with their 2nd or 3rd round pick.
11. Buffalo – B.J. Raji, DT/NT – Boston College
Defensive tackle isn’t a pressing need for the Bills. However, aside from maybe Robert Ayers or Everette Brown if he is still on the board, there aren’t really any defensive ends worth the 11th overall pick. Pairing Raji with Marcus Stroud could make the Bills rush defense as potent as the Vikings has been the last several years.
12. Denver – Tyson Jackson, DE - LSU
Malcolm Jenkins could be a possibility here, but the Broncos already invested 17.3 million dollars of guaranteed money this off-season in 31 year old cornerback Andre Goodman and 35 year old free safety Brian Dawkins. Consequently, the Broncos are more likely to use this pick to help fix their front seven.
13. Washington – Robert Ayers, DE - Tennessee
The Jason Taylor experiment did not work out in 2008 as the Redskins finished the season with just 24 sacks. Ayers, considered to be a borderline 1st round pick by many websites, is currently ranked 5th overall on Mike Mayock’s big board. Mayock has an excellent track record at projecting where players go so there are probably multiple teams that consider him a top 15 prospect.
14. New Orleans – Malcolm Jenkins, FS/CB – Ohio State
Although the Saints signed former Bills cornerback Jabari Greer, they still desperately need a safety. Someone on the NFL network made a comment that Jenkins could be a pro bowl safety from day one in the NFL.
15. Houston – Vontae Davis, CB – Illinois
The Texans may have Dunta Robinson at CB already, but Robinson could really use a better partner in crime. If Mark Sanchez, Andre Smith, or Michael Oher are still on the board, then the Texans could probably trade down and receive very good compensation doing so.
16. San Diego – Michael Oher, OT – Mississippi
Jeromey Clary struggled last season at right tackle so San Diego could very well select Oher or Andre Smith should one of them be available. With the departure of Igor Olshansky, Tyson Jackson is another possibility if he is available.
17. N.Y. Jets – Knowshon Moreno, RB - Georgia
Thomas Jones will turn 31 prior to the start of the 2009 season. That’s a dinosaur relative to other starting running backs in the NFL. The Jets have a lot of money invested in their offensive line and if they aren’t sure that Leon Washington can be a feature back, then there’s a good chance the Jets select Moreno or Beanie Wells with this pick.
18. Denver – Aaron Maybin, OLB – Penn State
The Broncos gave up 5.0 ypc last season so Rey Mauauluga is certainly a possibility since he is a monster again the run. More important then a run stuffer, however, is an elite pass rusher and Aaron Maybin has the potential to be one sometime.
19. Tampa Bay – Josh Freeman, QB – Kansas State
The Buccaneers didn’t pay Josh McNown or Bryan Leftwich the amount of money an NFL starting QB makes. Consequently, there’s a very good chance that the Buccaneers select Freeman if both the Jets and Broncos pass on him.
20. Detroit – Peria Jerry, DT - Mississippi
A lot of people have Britton or Beatty here, but nfldraftscout.com’s scouting reports on cbssportsline.com suggest that both might be better at RT then LT as both are better run blockers then pass blockers. Instead of drafting a RT for the second straight year, the Lions need to take the best non WR/RB available. That might be Jerry who would help the Lions get better against the run.
21. Philadelphia – Brandon Pettigrew, TE – Oklahoma State
Knowshon Moreno and Beanie Wells seem to be popular picks at #21. However, under Andy Reid, the Eagles have never selected a RB in the first or second round despite having no running back rush for more then 617 yards in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004. The Eagles had first round pick following each of those seasons. The Eagles could use an all-around TE and Pettigrew, aside from below average speed, is a complete tight end.
22. Minnesota – Ebbon Britton, OT – Arizona
While the Vikings are set at LT, their offense could really use an upgrade at RT. The Vikings also have a need at center since they didn’t resign Matt Birk, but there’s a decent chance former 2006 2nd round pick Ryan Cook could excel at the position. He has played RT for the Vikings, but he was a center coming out of college.
23. New England –Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR – Maryland
If DHB is available at #23, the Patriots may have trouble passing on him even if Rey Maualuga is still on the board because of DHB’s supreme speed and size for a wide receiver. Since Randy Moss is 32 and a Welker is only a slot receiver drafting DHB makes sense because it typically takes wide receivers a few years to develop. That way, Tom Brady still has a number one receiver to throw the ball to when Moss’s skills begin to erode in a few years.
24. Atlanta – Brian Cushing, OLB – USC
The Falcons already had a need a linebacker even before they lost Michael Boley to free agency. Cushing would probably be gone by now most years. However, this year’s draft is very deep at the OLB position so he could very well be available. However, if Pettigrew is still available and the Falcons don’t end up trading their second round pick for Tony Gonzalez, then Pettigrew probably becomes the more likely choice.
25. Miami – Beanie Wells, RB – Ohio State
Dolphins fans may disagree with this pick. However, it wouldn't be the first time that a team that has a good RB already takes another RB. The Dolphins are team that strikes me as one that would like to rely heavily on the run and they still haven’t resigned 32 year-old Ricky Williams. Adding a 2nd talented RB to pair with Ronnie Brown could make the Dolphins running game comparable to that of the 2008 Carolina Panthers.
26. Baltimore – Rey Maualuga, ILB – USC
Despite being known as a defensive team, six out of the Ravens last nine picks have been on the offensive side of the ball. Nonetheless, Maualuga is a strong possibility as the Ravens pick if he is available due to his run stuffing abilities even if the Ravens already have an adequate replacement on its roster for recently departed free agent Bart Scott. Maualuga could be available since he isn’t a great fit for 4-3 teams due to his sub par coverage skills.
27. Indianapolis – Percy Harvin, WR - Florida
Although the Colts have a pressing need at DT, they could very well select a wide receiver anyways despite already having two solid ones in Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez. Although his route running skills are raw, Harvin has the potential to be a very good WR someday and could make an immediate impact in the return game, something the Colts have struggled with the last several years.
28. Philadelphia – Michael Johnson, DE – Georgia Tech
Philadelphia could use an upgrade at DE opposite of Trent Cole. Of the Eagles eight first picks in the Andy Reid era, four have been defensive linemen. Thus, the Eagles drafting a defensive linemen with one of its first two picks seems like a real possibility.
29. N.Y. Giants – Kenny Britt, WR – Rutgers
The Giants recently released their top wide receiver, Plaxico Burress. If the Giants are unable or unwilling to trade for Braylon Edwards (no way the Cardinals trade Anquan Boldin to an NFC rival), then there’s a good chance they’ll take a wide receiver in the 1st or 2nd round of this year’s draft. If the Giants want Britt, who has been rising up draft boards lately, they’ll need to draft him here.
30. Tennessee – Clay Matthews, OLB - USC
A lot of drafts have the Titans selecting Darius Butler. However, while cornerback Nick Harper will be 35 at the start of the season, OLB Keith Bulluck is 32 and will be a free agent after the 2009 season. If the Titans feel Matthews is a better prospect at his position then Butler, then Matthews will most likely be the pick.
31. Arizona – Alex Mack, C – California
Current Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein, played sub par all season. If Mack is truly the great center prospect most people say he is, then he could very well be the Cardinals’ first round pick.
32. Pittsburgh – Sean Smith, CB/S – Utah
The Steelers lost Bryant McFadden, one of its starting cornerbacks, to free agency. At 6’3 and sub 4.5 forty runner, Smith could fit in nicely as a starting CB in the Steelers 3-4 scheme. The Steelers could use help in the interior of their offensive line, but the only guard or center worth a first round pick is probably Alex Mack.
-Round 2-
1.Detroit – Darius Butler, CB – Connecticut
2. New England – Larry English, OLB – Northern Illinois
3.St. Louis – James Lauringaitis, MLB – Ohio State
4.Cleveland – Connor Barwin, OLB – Cincinnati
5.Seattle – Donald Brown, RB – Connecticut
