Throw the first game? (1 Viewer)

I know it sounds crazy, but I am in 10 team redraft (20 players each team) where 6 teams make the playoffs and it seems there are always guys that can help you win it all from week one waivers. Is this just to crazy or could there be something behind it.

We had a guy do this last year and it is a Busch league move IMO.

Fantasy football is about $$ but first and foremost it should be about fun.

60% of your league makes the playoffs, and you propose losing a game on purpose as a way to help your team get in? I vote for "to crazy".

Insane.

In our league, the line between making the playoffs and not is razor thin. There are always 3-4 teams at 7-6 or 6-7 that end up going to the last week for 1 or 2 spots.

No, he's proposing losing the first game to have 1st rights to any waiver wire pick-ups after week one. His thinking is that he would have his choice of the best WW selection of any player who is available Tuesday morning (or Wednesday.) It's not crazy. It's a "bush league move." But maybe that's the type of league it is, seeing how there are only 10 teams and 6 make the playoffs.

What's the matter nub4life, afraid you won't be able to make the grade putting your best lineup on the field against 9 other teams?

ETA: In my 12 team league, tanking games is a prerequisite to losing your team for good. We'd rather have somebody in our league that always tries to win, no matter how poor their team is.

Last year I drafted S, Smith and B. Marshall at 2 and 3 being prepared to lose my first game. I figured if I started slow I would have the waiver wire position to strengthen my team. Well I won my first week so this is mute but I would never intentionally throw a game for any reason. (ie. losing to get a better matchup in the playoffs) It's all about Karma.

What makes you think a week one flash is going to improve your team enough to start out 0-1 on purpose?
Exactly. It would have to be a Warner-esque pickup to really make any difference. Also, you feel Week 1 is the week where guys come out of nowhere, but who says it won't be Week 2 or 3? We had a guy that just sucked in our league years back and he would always lose his first game (because he was just bad) and get the first pickup for the first few weeks. Reality is, he was still a doormat.

Could you speak up....I couldn't hear the last part of your post.

the first three weeks in my league are divisional games (as are the last three weeks before playoffs). This precludes anyone from tanking those games as they are the most important. That being said, do what you have to to win (though I don't think this is a viable method to doing anything but looking like a complete #####)

We blind bid so its not an issue.
I want to propose this for our league this year. How do you keep track of the bids? Do you do it like Antsports and everyone gets $100 bid bucks? Or do you actually bid real money and the commish keeps track of it? I am on RTSports, does anyone know how to set it up for blind bids?TIA

Won't there be 5 losers in a 10 team league after week 1? What if you're 5th in waiver priority? How is that going to help you win it all? Did I miss something?, because I didn't read all the posts in this thread.

Usually of those 5 losers guy with the lowest score picks 1st.Just submit a horrid lineup that assures you score 9 pts on the week.IMO, it is kinda a bush move, but it is a strategy. Just like sometimes throwing the last game, that will allow a stronger team NOT to get into the playoffs.I have thought of the same thing, but would never do it.There does seem to always be a hot pick up after week 1.Sometimes they stick (Colston, Warner, Royal, Gates) Sometimes the don't (QGriffin he is the only guy I could think of but I am sure there are many more)

I'd say no way for a couple reasons:

1. Losing a game that way definitely isn't sporting - and that should count for something.

2. There is no real reason to expect an obvious game changing player to be available after week one.

3. Even if you get a game changing player, it might not be enough to equal out a loss where you could have won.

4. You could miss the playoffs by a game.

5. In many leagues, total points scored is used as a tie breaker down the line. You would basically be throwing away any chance at winning a tie breaker.

Stupid move all the way around.

That part I would disagree with, especially in a 10 team league.I provided examples of players on the WW after week 1 above, and a 10 team league would probably make that list bigger

No, just the first week.

Gotta be the worse strategy move, I ever heard of, you tank the game and go for lowest points. 1st few weeks are division games and we use total points as one of our tiebreakers and if the highest scoring team in the league doesn't make the playoffs, the last seed is awarded to him, in my league. To hard to win games and to get points for a gamble like that.

And who's to say you don't get a 1 week wonder and wind up cutting a breakout guy you had on your roster after a bad week or a top 10 kicker or def. I like to watch 2-3 weeks before dropping guys I drafted, usually do 1 move those weeks, unless an injury hits my team or presents opportunity to to some other guys.

Yeah - I don't think it's worth it. To me, since H2H fantasy football already has a lot of luck - one of the most annoying things can be a team that doesn't put forth their best effort over the course of the year. Usually that is a team late in the year who is out of competition stopping actively managing their team which means they aren't managing byes, aren't always starting the best guys, etc. It is not cool for someone to have to play you at your best while somebody else by luck of the draw got to play you when you were trying to lose. If it was just your team that was hurt by this - it would be ok. But you are essentially hurting everyone except your week 1 opponent because they have to play you full strength and someone could miss the playoffs because you gave this one person a freebie.

If that doesn't convince you alone:

- there shouldn't be that much available on the waiver wire. Having 20-player teams cuts down on who's available - there are actually more guys rostered in your league than most 12-teamers (that have 16 guys/squad).

- while I do buy that Week 1 has a greater potential for an obvious WW pickup than any other week - it's far from a sure thing. If people are paying attention during preseason it's not that likely that there will be some monster surprise.

- while H2H has a lot of luck as I mentioned - there is usually an advantage to finishing the season as one of the top seeds, not just making the playoffs. If you have 6 teams make the playoffs - I'm guessing you have the top 2 teams having byes and the other 4 have to face off for the chance to get to take on the top 2 seeds in the semis. Finishing 1st or 2nd is a huge advantage in this situation - so losing a game on purpose is a very bad idea if you want to be 1st or 2nd. Even if you somehow handle the 6 playoff tteams differently, presumably having a higher seed means taking on one of the lesser teams.

To summarize - shady move that hurts the integrity of the league. And I think a move that actually hurts your likelihood to be champion rather than helps it.

We blind bid as well.In short, all free agents are available for bid each and every week. As the commish, I submit my bids to the other commish on Thursdays by 5 PM (of course if there is a Thur game, this changes) and he does the same thing to me.The other owners have an open period between 5 pm and 9 pm on Thursday to get their bids in. Of course you can e-mail them at any time, I just don't open the e-mail till after I submit my bid...honesty system on my part.He who bids the most, wins the player...money goes into the pot making our pot of money for the Champ a nice sum of cash. The WW produces more money than the entry fee. It's the only way IMO.

Now you're just throwing salt in the womb.Tyler Thigpen, Shaun Hill, Mark Bradley & Lance Moore weren't week 1 studs. They were some very good players that FFB'ers who paid attention could get that helped win leagues.

I agree with the idea that week one waivers are ones that help you win fantasy titles..I remember a guy getting Colston in week one a few years back(Conston's rookie season), and rode him to the title. there is always going to be a guy (or two) who get injured on opening day, carted-off injured.out for the season injured, and their backups become valuable entities..but I wouldn't recommend throwing a game in week one..I don't consider it to be a bad play/bush league..you paid to run your team, paid to be in the league, you can do with it as you like..it's just that you're giving another team a freebie..that win might hurt someone else down the road.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me strategically as it could easily backfire and cost you a playoff spot.

However, running a "welfare" type of waivers is, in my opinion, lame. And I'm always for shining a spotlight on stupid league rules, so it wouldn't bother me if another owner did it in that type of league.
