Throwback uni's (1 Viewer)

I know there was a post about this preseason, but I don't think anyone predicted it would get THIS out of control.

The Denver Broncos are wearing those horrid brown uni's....again.

The San Diego Chargers are wearing their (admittedly awesome) powder blues....again.

The New England Patriots wore the old Red uni's this week....again.

The Tennessee "may as well just start calling us the Oilers again" Titans wore their old Houston uni's....again.

And that's but a small sample of it. I believe the Patriots and Titans have worn their throwbacks as much as their actual uni's this year. What the heck spurned all this? Usually these uni's are reserved for special games on special dates or something, now they're just spawning out of nowhere.

I think they're allowed to wear them four times a season. And the reason is to honor the past teams but also to sell more jerseys. I don't think that's going to work out too well for the Broncos! Hell, even the Broncos players of the past must be wanting to vomit in their popcorn looking at those terrible unis!

:banned: Couldn't agree more.I thought it was cool when teams wore them in 1994, I believe, for the 75th anniversary of the NFL. That should have been it.

Well, all these Uni's have been for the 50th of the AFL, so it's a little understandable, as that's a similar anniversary

I love the Chargers, Pats, Oilers throwbacks. Hate the Denver one because I never remember those..ever.

Some announcer said that day that those Denver brown unis were actually burned by fans....I am sure someone can find the history on google or wiki if they want.

In the other thread I said it should be limited to once per ten years, and you have to wear the same throwback all season long.

The Pats and Chargers should just keep them. They are both 100x better than their normal uniforms.

The Bronocs should burn theirs again, but then bring back the real Orange and Blue.

They should only be able to wear throwbacks in the playoffs. It would limit it's use, not disgrace the uni by letting jabronis wear them and would really make the games look a lot more historic.

Both Broncos throwbacks from the last two weeks are hideous.

Those old Patriots unis are like the best ones ever. They should go back to those.

I would be happy if the Pats and Bolts wore those unis for the rest of the year and beyond. I really like those red jerseys and the patriot on the helmet, much better than the normal uniform.

We should start some sort of petition to get these teams to wear these full time.....

They had a public ceremony to burn all of the ugly yellow socks in 1962.Denver's uniforms from the later part of the AFL were actually pretty cool. It's a shame the NFL won't allow them to wear those.
Agreed Def very cool. Almost rollerballish just need the Computer font numbers nowI dig the socks though. We need more variation in the socks. maybe some diamond/check style payne stewart used to get around in

The Denver throwbacks absolutely rock. Love how Royal twists the socks...makes him look even faster.

Marketing. And entertainment.FWIW, I like the throwbacks, except for the Oilers, as I feel the Texans should have the rights to them, just like Cleveland maintained the rights to all the Browns stuff when Baltimore moved. And it should work that way everytime a team moves... the fans in the city deserve the memories to stay with that city IMO.

And yes, even though I'm a huge Colts fan, I think Irsay was a jerk, and the Colts should have had to change their name, just like Baltimore and Tennessee.

you are out of your mind, op --- I could watch those red pats unis in the snow every week.
Those Pats uniforms remind me of the 85 super bowl. And that's perfectly ok! :coffee:
Pats unis are cool. Seattle's 'new' unis not so much.neither are the Eagles' outfits..and the old school Rams unis are nice to see again, yellow instead of gold..reminds me of the Pat Haden/Ferragamo days :wolf:the Steelers throwbacks are just awful.no other way to say it, they're among the worst in the league.gotta love Miami's orange jerseys ! Panther's powder blue is just plain wrong. Atlanta's throwbacks are nice.

The refs' unis are so hideous it distracts me from everything else. Seriously! I can't handle those. :goodposting:

I think the league stand a chance to lose its identity with so many throwback games.
I agree with this. Imagine Coke changing their logo 2-4 times a year. They tweak the packaging every now and again, and Pepsi does an overhaul every 10-20 years or so, but building brands takes time. NFL teams are brands. The use of throwbacks this year goes against branding 101, something the NFL has been really good at. You build a brand by consistent usage. The more you use it the more equity it has built up. The more fans/consumers get attached to it and recognize it.This is out of control. Made worse by them changing the team names to boot. The Dallas Texans vs the Dallas Cowboys? Or the NY Titans taking on the Houston Oilers (Tenn Titans). I don't want a history lesson on Sunday, I just want to watch the 2009 NFL season. I'm an avid fan and this is confusing to me, imagine what a casual fan sees. Do it once if at all, and sell the alt gear year round. Fans will buy the junk, we don't need to see it every other Sunday.

I just wanted to throw my support behind the Broncos throwbacks. The socks might be a bit much, but the simplicity of the brown, yellow, and white unis is great. The helmet absolutely rocks!

throwback unis rule. love how all the coaches and assistants are on board as well with the crappy one color screen-printed gear.. well, errwon except Belechick of course.

Love the Pats old uniforms, but after years of mediocrity, the team has been dominant since switching to their current uniforms. Therefore, I can't help but prefer Flying Elvis to Pat Patriot.

This thread is really funny and timely. Last night I was having this exact conversation with my wife about how I can't even tell who is playing in these games anymore with all the silly throwbacks. It's ok as a novelty once in while but when every team is doing it 3 times a year it just becomes and ugly 3rd uniform.

i don't care about the uniforms. the browns could wear pink for all i care if they could just win a few games. (insert joke here.)

maybe i would find it more interesting if they had a throwback uniform. when they do their "throwbacks" all they did was put a number on the side of the helmet and change the width of one of the stripes or something like that.

I know I'll be in a tiny minority, but I like the brown & yellow color scheme. Especially the yellow home jerseys (which the Rams oughtta bring back, too). The 1960 Broncos did have plain uniforms (except the socks), but the problem wasn't the color scheme.
