Bills | T. Thomas says McGahee needs to show up

Published Tue Jun 6 9:44:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Leo Roth, of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, reports former Buffalo Bills RB Thurman Thomas says RB Willis McGahee needs to show up to the team's camp soon. Thomas added, "You know, those are those guys from the U. They walk to a different beat. I wish he were at camp. He is basically the offense and they're putting in a new (system) and he should be a part of it. I know when we played whether it was mandatory or voluntary, we showed up. We didn't do a lot, but we showed up (laughter). Maybe it's a different breed now. But he (McGahee) is the main guy for the Bills' offense and if you want to be a true leader and if you call yourself the best back in the NFL, then you should act like it and show your true colors and be here."

Maybe these are McGahee's true colors.

Seems odd coming from Thurman's mouth. I went to college with Thurman and have a few stories. It is just funny to see how good he is at giving advice/opinions.

 Thurman telling McGahee to "show up"?

:lmao:

Like Thurman "showed up" for those Super Bowls where he fumbled like 8 times and choked and quit?

I loved Thurman Thomas and idolized him growing up, but don't preach to people about "showing up".

I was/am a Cowboy fan, but must say Thurman "showed up" or his team never would have gotten the opportunity to be strummed. :boxing:

McGahee needs to show up soon, says ex-Bills star Thomas

Leo Roth

Staff writer

(June 6, 2006) — BATAVIA — Thurman Thomas knows what it's like to be regarded as the best running back in the NFL. The former Buffalo Bill led the league in yards from scrimmage a record four consecutive seasons from 1989-92.

So how does the team's all-time leading rusher feel about Willis McGahee skipping all of the Bills off-season practices so far?

Thomas didn't mince words when asked about McGahee on Monday before teeing off in the 20th annual Jim Kelly Celebrity Classic at Terry Hills Golf Club.

"You know, those are those guys from the U," said Thomas, referring to players from the University of Miami. "They walk to a different beat. I wish he were at camp. He is basically the offense and they're putting in a new (system) and he should be a part of it."

The Bills, who will conduct another series of voluntary organized team activities this week and next week hold a mandatory camp, are holding their breath that McGahee will show.

Said Thomas: "I know when we played whether it was mandatory or voluntary, we showed up. "We didn't do a lot, but we showed up (laughter). Maybe it's a different breed now. But he (McGahee) is the main guy for the Bills' offense and if you want to be a true leader and if you call yourself the best back in the NFL, then you should act like it and show your true colors and be here."

 There's a difference between showing up and playing poorly. Even the greats have bad games but that's why they "show up" and get better. McGahee isn't half the back the Thurmanator was.

Ex-RB sounds off on Bills and Sabres

By ALLEN WILSON

News Sports Reporter

6/6/2006

BATAVIA - It has been seven years since Thurman Thomas wore a Bills uniform, but he still bleeds Buffalo blue.

Thomas seemed to be in touch with many Western New York sports fans when he expressed some of the feelings they have about their teams.

He thinks the Bills are going to move. He wasn't thrilled with the team's draft. He criticized running back Willis McGahee for missing offseason workouts. He also is bummed about the Sabres being ousted from the NHL playoffs.

Thomas teed off on those topics before teeing off at the Jim Kelly Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday at Terry Hills Golf Course.

Offering no explanation other than saying it is "my gut feeling," Thomas predicted the Bills' days in Buffalo are numbered.

"I think in the next couple of years you're going to see the moment that the Bills have an opportunity to leave, or if things are not going well here I think they will pick up and leave," he said. "With Ralph [Wilson, the Bills' owner] talking about the small market and not being able to compete with the other [big-market] teams, it's pretty safe to say [they're leaving]. I would give it three or four years, maybe."

Somehow Thomas pointed to the Bills' draft as a signal to him that they are leaving. He didn't agree with the decision to draft Donte Whitner with the eighth overall pick even though strong safety was a need.

"I'm not saying that he's not a quality player," Thomas said. "I know you lost Lawyer [Milloy], but I just thought that maybe they could have gone for a nose tackle or maybe an offensive tackle."

A number of draft observers agreed that Whitner was drafted too high. But not everyone shares that view.

"Just because the so-called experts think it might not have been the right pick or say "I didn't have him up on my board' - who are they?" Kelly said. "[The Bills] do their homework, they know exactly what's going on. If there's anybody there you trust it's a guy like Marv Levy."

Thomas is excited about Levy's return to the Bills and is looking forward to seeing what the Hall of Fame coach will do as general manager.

But Thomas is bothered by McGahee not taking part in the team's voluntary offseason activities. While acknowledging that former University of Miami players are usually no-shows at spring workouts, Thomas said McGahee isn't setting a good example by staying away.

"I knew when we had to come and we had to show up, whether it was mandatory or voluntary or whatever, we showed up," Thomas said. "We didn't do a lot, but we showed up. It's just a different breed [of player] coming through.

"But I wish [McGahee] was here because he is the focal point and the main guy for this offense. If you want to be a true leader and call yourself the best running back in the National Football League, well, you should act like it and show your true colors and come here and be a team leader."

With the Bills and Sabres continuing to fall short of winning championships, some fans are convinced their teams are cursed. You can count Thomas as a believer. He even points to the sale and relocation of the NBA's Buffalo Braves in 1978 as the beginning of a hex.

Thomas believes the Sabres offer hope for long-suffering fans. He was captivated by the team's stirring postseason run. He wore a Sabres jersey while watching Game Seven of the Eastern Conference finals from his home in Orlando, Fla.

"It was tough to overcome losing four defensemen, but they showed what a real team could be," he said. "They hung together. I was really impressed with Chris Drury and how he played. That team has a lot of talent. If they come back healthy next year and continue to have the same players I guarantee you if there's any team that can break the curse it's the Buffalo Sabres."

Right...he got his stats...that's what he did...that's how they got there.BUT...I remember him fumbling the ball numerous times in crucial situations. I really lost respect for him in the last Super Bowl they were in (I think). I remember him fumbling...AGAIN, then strolling over to the bench and hanging his head...he quit and lost confidence in himself. He was probably thinking "Not again". Yeah...he produced, but not when you needed him most.

It made me sick. I still get ill to this day thinking about it.

:X

And let's not forget those other 3 "stellar" Super Bowl performances you forgot to mention:

Super Bowl XXVI

Thomas is noted for a mishap in Super Bowl XXVI. At the start of the game, Thomas was unable to find his helmet, causing him to miss Buffalo's first two offensive plays (both of which were running plays). He went on to gain just 13 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. He also caught 4 passes for 27 yards [1]

[edit]

Super Bowl XXVII

For the second year in a row, Thomas had a dismal performance in the Super Bowl. He scored the first points of the game for his team on a 2-yard touchdown run, but was limited to just 19 rushing yards on 11 carries and 4 receptions for 10 yards in Buffalo's 52-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He also committed a costly fumble that was converted into a Dallas touchdown.

However, it must be noted that Thomas was still recovering from a hip injury he suffered in the first game of the postseason. As a result, running back Kenneth Davis got the majority of carries in the game.

[edit]

Super Bowl XXVIII

Thomas had yet another disappointing Super Bowl performance in this game, which the Bills lost to the Cowboys 30-13. He scored the only touchdown of the game for his team, but was limited to just 37 rushing yards on 16 carries. Thomas also committed 2 fumbles that lead to 10 Dallas points. However, he was a reliable target as a receiver out of the backfield, catching 7 passes for 52 yards.

Thomas's performance in the AFC title game prior to the Super Bowl was far better. In the Bills 30-13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, he rushed for 186 yards, caught 2 passes for 22 yards, and scored 3 touchdowns.

Also...

In Super Bowl XXV Buffalo fumbled 1 and recovered it.

In Super Bowl XXVI they fumbled 6 times and recovered 5 of them.

In Super Bowl XXVII they fumbled 8 times and recovered 3 of them.

In Super Bowl XXVIII they fumbled 3 times and recovered 1 of them.

In 4 games they fumbled 18 times and only recovered 10 of them.

Thurman Thomas only "showed up for one Super Bowl". He was a great regular season back.

Didn't intend to hijack. Just had to prove a point. Keep in mind I have always been a Buffalo fan so I'm not just ripping them to be doing it. They were notorious for choking when it mattered most.

I don't think Thomas deserves the harsh criticism he's getting for the Bills Super Bowl losses. Sure he may have had disappointing games but I've never felt that Thurman was the reason those teams came up short. On the flip side, I think his Super Bowl 25 performance is overstated at times. Yes his numbers were excellent, but they came versus a Giants Defense that played only 3 down lineman with an extra defensive back. New York's D that day was geared towards stopping the deep strike Jim Kelly no huddle offense. The Giants gave up the underneath stuff all day. Thomas should've had 100 yards in that game.

Postseason arguments aside, Thomas is a Hall of Famer in my book.

The Bills averaged nearly 1 point per minute of possesion on offense. The Giants defense really had no answer for Thurman, who averaged nearly 10 yards per touch. The Giants ball control offense and poor tackling from the Bills defense is what stopped the Bills offense. The Redskins and first Cowboys Super Bowls were blowouts so Thurman never really had much of a chance to get going. His fumble in the 4th one was definitely huge, but then the defense couldn't stop Emmitt either.and not sure what you mean by postseason arguments aside. doesn't Thurman have a bunch of postseason records? His AFC championship game performances are phenomenal from what I recall.

and anyone who says that he's not a hall of famer is clueless. it was a sham that he didn't get in this year.

Amen.

Thurman Thomas also added, McGahee needs to eat and drink, open the door before getting in, and the grass is green and the sky is blue.
