*** THURSDAY CUT THREAD *** (1 Viewer)

From Boston.com

The Dallas Cowboys announced the retirement of linebacker Dat Nguyen. An eight-year veteran, Nguyen led the Cowboys with 172 tackles in 2001, his first full season as a starter. He was slowed by a neck injury last season, playing his last game Thanksgiving Day against Denver . . . The Detroit Lions signed Shaun King to a one-year contract, adding quarterback depth and perhaps competition for Joey Harrington . . . Receiver Kelley Washington and three other restricted free agents received one-year contract offers from the Cincinnati Bengals, giving the team control over whether they stay or go. Receiver Kevin Walter, fullback Jeremi Johnson, and guard Scott Kooistra also were tendered contracts, a move that allows the Bengals to match any offer they might receive from another team . . . Tommy Maddox, who lost his starting quarterback's job shortly after Ben Roethlisberger's arrival in 2004, was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers in a long-expected salary cap move. Also cut was cornerback Willie Williams . . . Newsday is reporting the New York Jets and quarterback Chad Pennington spent yesterday hammering out details on a contractual compromise that is expected to keep him on the team and an agreement is expected by tomorrow . . . Running back Reuben Droughns, who last season became the first Cleveland back to go over 1,000 yards since 1985, signed a three-year contract extension. Droughns rushed for 1,232 yards last year and broke Jim Brown's record for carries in a season (309) while starting all 16 games. Terms of the deal were not disclosed . . . The Indianapolis Colts offered one-year tenders of $712,000 to restricted free agents Aaron Moorehead, an offensive lineman, and receiver Makoa Freitas

The New York Jets announced today the extension of G/C Pete Kendall’s contract and the release of C Kevin Mawae. The announcements were made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

“We are pleased to extend the contract for Pete,” said Tannenbaum. “In 2005 he displayed the versatility that we knew he possessed when he signed with the Jets in 2004. His leadership skills and high level of play provide us flexibility along the interior of the offensive line.”

So the latest, as I head into the role of Daddy, is that both the Owners and the National Football League Players Association are making progress toward a new Collective Bargaining Agreement and that, barring any last-minute setbacks -- and we are in the last minute -- free agency will again be pushed back a few days.

I'm guessing that free agency will begin on Thursday at 12:01 a.m., which is nearly a full week of delay, which means that free agency is going to be a slam-bang affair.
