SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
This is a Tiger thread. Let's get this Spieth talk moved to another thread, guys. TIA
Don't get to tear him down in epic fashion if they don't first build him up to legendary status.I heard lots of hyperbole during Masters week about Speith, who I like. But it was over the top. I believe it was Ian Baker-Finch who called him "a legend" on the back nine on Sunday. I had to rewind it. A little early for such talk. Everybody seems to want to be the one who "called it" when he was just starting his career.
Not to mention, most birdies, only player to ever be -19 and a whole slew of other records. I think it was pretty safe to call his performance legendary.Winning the Masters by four at 21 is immediate entry into the legend club.
I wouldn't say he pissed away those wins. He's young, and guys need to learn how to win.I've watched him quite a bit the last 3+ seasons. He puts himself in position to win a lot. But I wouldn't call him clutch - he's pissed away plenty of potential wins. That said, he's taken it to a whole 'nother level the last four events he's played. Quite a roll.Just watch him play. He has the confidence of a guy who's been playing on the tour for 20 years. Incredibly clutch. The putt he made to force a playoff at the shell houston open was awesome. Just walked in a 12 footer like it was nothing. He's been dominant out there.
He has been super resilient. In that aspect he reminds of Watson around '74-'75. He threw away a few before he learned how to close. These young guys just don't give a ####; no time to mope or analyze, just keep going after it. It's like a relief pitcher blowing a couple and then he goes out and saves 30 in a row. That's amazing mental toughness. Spieth has a short memory or else he learns quick.
If he wants to be a legend he needs to follow that up with a group thing with Ben Crenshaw's daughters this week.Winning the Masters by four at 21 is immediate entry into the legend club.
Will his hot fiance participate? If he wants to be a legend he needs to follow that up with a group thing with Ben Crenshaw's daughters this week.Winning the Masters by four at 21 is immediate entry into the legend club.
I think it's best to keep the measurements on his performance relative to the field. Yes, he played really well, but they left the course just about as easy as it could be so I don't like that those records were topped. That was not cool. Not to mention, most birdies, only player to ever be -19 and a whole slew of other records. I presumed she would be there, in only an apron and heels, bringing sandwiches and lemon aid. Everyone played the same course, no? Why wasn't everyone -19 if it was so easy?

Putting at that distance is a fickle mistress. Its hard to predict greatness for someone if they need to reliably put at that distance to be great.I'd say he has a lot of everything, but doesn't have one attribute that stands out besides his planning and course management. I think it's his mental focus and his putting between 10 and 20 feet. His distance control with all shots in bag is better than most guys out there right now. He may not be a magician like Phil, but his short game is amazing. He's not long. He's not a magician around the greens; in fact, he's shaky on 4-8 footers. He hasn't been a great closer. If you can't see how Spieth is different from some of the guys on that list, I suggest you watch some more golf.
He was a prodigy, the best junior golfer since Woods. He left college after only 3 semesters and had a remarkably smooth transition to the pro level. He did well in the Walker and Ryder Cups, so he's tough mentally. Great family & support system around him.
But what makes him great? What makes him different from other young golfers who enjoyed a measure of success?
and putts lights outSo this is what I am hearing about Speith: Very good overall game and great course management. With that combination, it sounds like he will be in contention to win a lot of tournaments.
Then he not only will be in contention, he will win a lot of tournaments.and putts lights outSo this is what I am hearing about Speith: Very good overall game and great course management. With that combination, it sounds like he will be in contention to win a lot of tournaments.
Now when you say "in contention" do you mean tied for 17th?Then he not only will be in contention, he will win a lot of tournaments.and putts lights outSo this is what I am hearing about Speith: Very good overall game and great course management. For the 2015 Masters (using only the 55 that made the cut)I think it's best to keep the measurements on his performance relative to the field. In 1999 Woods finished T18. Guess he's improving. Now when you say "in contention" do you mean tied for 17th?

maybe elin wasn't so hot in the sack, hence tiger going out of bounds repeatedly. Maybe vonn is a freakDefinitely getting worse. Elin >>>>>>>>> Vonn IMO. Then again we don't know what he's pulling on the side.
Had to fix this for you:Definitely getting worse. Elin >>>>>>>>> Vonn IMO. Then again we don't know what he's pulling on the side.

Notice how the Tiger luvers like to tout how great he scored on one hand and the complain about how easy the course was on the other?I think it's best to keep the measurements on his performance relative to the field. 8 majors would tie him (at least for now) with Tom Watson for 6th most all time.Spieth looks like he's going to be in the 6-8 major range when all is said in done. Which is still a remarkable career.
That's the impact Tiger's career has on golf now though. The media is so busy "looking for the next Tiger" that it minimizes a guy who "only" wins 6-8 majors in his career.
At Augusta I would say 10 behind with one round to go is not impossible. he could catch the leader. The bigger problem is how many golfers are between him and the leader. I mean odds are they all won't come back to the field. If a guy is 10 behind and goes out and shoots 64, that's 8 of those strokes right there (to par). I think Greg Norman was like 6 or 7 shots ahead going in to the final round in 96. He lost by 6 or 7 shots. Point is there can be some big swings on that golf course. It's one of the reasons it's such a great tournament.Ten strokes back and he was in contention? No. No he wasn't.dparker713 said:Tiger was in the third to last group to go out on Sunday, i.e. he was in the top 6. This course wasn't so easy that a 2 over from Spieth on Sunday was out of the question. Not the way it was set up last week.At Augusta I would say 10 behind with one round to go is not impossible. he could catch the leader. So the conditions‑‑ the scoring conditions were there, because the greens were soft. I mean we could be aggressive. And the balls were staying back. I was talking to Thomas Bjorn and O'Meara and even Tom Watson earlier today and we couldn't believe how slow they were yesterday. Again, they were slow again today.
The balls were spinning back. 5‑irons were making ball marks, things like that, things that you just don't normally find here. But it's up to the committee. If they want to make this golf course a little drier, I was telling the guys earlier, it's quiet out there, there's no sub airs going. If they turn the sub airs on, they can suck the moisture out of this thing and get them firm, or they can live with it like it is, and we can go out there and make a bunch of birdies.
