Here is Tiger looking at the sky. Tourney a few years ago Tiger was 10 shots back with 8 holes to go & some TV announcer said, "he's not out of it yet". That's my #####.

Yeah, Tiger is definitely still a major draw. I do think that the sport and the TV coverage did a huge disservice to itself years back by focusing solely on Tiger. I'm sure it was easy to do so, but Tiger was never going to be "Tiger" forever. Everyone has an expiration date. They should have been focusing on some of the younger kids coming up, trying to take down Tiger towards the end. That's a tough line to balance, though.

So the conditions‑‑ the scoring conditions were there, because the greens were soft. I mean we could be aggressive. And the balls were staying back. I was talking to Thomas Bjorn and O'Meara and even Tom Watson earlier today and we couldn't believe how slow they were yesterday. Again, they were slow again today.The balls were spinning back. 5‑irons were making ball marks, things like that, things that you just don't normally find here. But it's up to the committee. If they want to make this golf course a little drier, I was telling the guys earlier, it's quiet out there, there's no sub airs going. If they turn the sub airs on, they can suck the moisture out of this thing and get them firm, or they can live with it like it is, and we can go out there and make a bunch of birdies.

Collins: That had to do with the one thing Augusta National can't control, Mother Nature. High temps and high humidity made it impossible to get the greens as rock hard as we've seen in years past. Even with the SubAir system under the putting surfaces running in the early part of the week, high humidity kept moisture at the surface of the turf. Why the greens seemed slowed to some players I think was more mental than anything else.

So this is what I am hearing about Speith: Very good overall game and great course management. With that combination, it sounds like he will be in contention to win a lot of tournaments.

Now when you say "in contention" do you mean tied for 17th?

Tiger was in the third to last group to go out on Sunday, i.e. he was in the top 6. He needed to post a ridiculous score, but he was in contention.

At Augusta I would say 10 behind with one round to go is not impossible. he could catch the leader. The bigger problem is how many golfers are between him and the leader. I mean odds are they all won't come back to the field. If a guy is 10 behind and goes out and shoots 64, that's 8 of those strokes right there (to par). I think Greg Norman was like 6 or 7 shots ahead going in to the final round in 96. He lost by 6 or 7 shots. Point is there can be some big swings on that golf course. It's one of the reasons it's such a great tournament.

In a vacuum, I agree with you. Of course it's theoretically possible.

In this particular situation, there were two factors that made it practically impossible:

1. The perfect course and weather conditions made it exceedingly unlikely that Spieth, Phil and Rose would shoot over par. Indeed. almost every contender except Tiger shot under par on Sunday.

2. Tiger is 39. His best days are clearly behind him. There was no way he was going to shoot 64.

1) He only needed Spieth to shoot over par. Rory was in the exact same position as him. He finished in 4th, 6 off the lead. If just Spieth shoots over par he's right there with Phil and Rose. Basically all that needed to happen was to swap the rounds of Spieth and Hoffman. Its not like there was a cast of thousands he needed to climb over - it was 4 guys.

2) Anyone on tour, on any given day, can get hot and go super low. There were 2 66s and a few 67s - the course was there for the taking.

Lol. Ifs and buts and candy and nuts and all that...

How about the fact that of all the people who had a shot to make an improbable run, Tiger shat the bed. Couldn't hit a fairway. He was never in contention, by any objective measure.

A more accurate assessment is that Tiget fixed his short game, played two decent rounds where his short game came up large, but was never close to being a threat to win the tourney.

That will be your narrative from here on in. He may win another tourney. Contend for a major even. Maybe. But he is not a top guy anymore and never will be. He put it together for a sweet run in 2013. But the other 5 years since ambiengate are the real story and validate the greatest call ever on this board (which happened in '09).

Taking a holistic view of Tiger's career since the Fin call and describing it as "competitive" is generous, really.

Yeah, that's complete bull#### and he knows it. He likes his Masters privileges the way they are and has no interest in getting on the ANGC radar in a manner that could be perceived as critical. The rain was minimal and behind the Friday night rain was very dry air. The humidity Saturday and Sunday was like 25%. And I don't think they ever got more than 2/10ths in a 24 hour period. It still doesn't explain the lack of subairs running Saturday and Sunday. And Michael might want to go back and watch the tournament again for green speeds. If he doesn't have much time, he might look at putts from above the hole on 12 on Friday and compare with every other year. That could have explained the fairways holding the way they did, but not the greens. Either he was the worst caddy ever and is the worst golf analyst ever (he's not good, but hey he's quirky!), or that's what a punt looks like.

It is. The speed and slope of greens at the Masters and the fact you have to leave the ball below the hole on your approach shots are pretty much the defining characteristic.
