Tiger Woods (3 Viewers)

Probably could have a shirt for tiger lovers and tiger haters if you've actually follows the thread over the years. This is one of the worst threads for a reason.

Friday morning leaderboards at tournaments with lots of people under par are always deceptive. Half the field hasn't had their second bite at the apple yet. He'll out out of the top ten in a couple hours, I'm guessing.

Still, Tiger is hitting fairways and greens and making birdies after looking like he didn't belong in tournaments for the last couple months. That's much bigger news that where he finishes in the field and how strong or weak the field is.
This. The dudes griping that all of the best players in the world aren't at this tourney are missing the point. This isn't -- and never has been -- about Tiger vs. the field. It's about Tiger vs. Tiger. If the old tiger returns to form, the field will vanish again.

Oh man I hope he crushes it on Saturday. Oh man. This thread would be awesome.

Splitting up with Lindsey Vonn was the best thing to happen to the guy. He needs to be be banging random hoors to be good on the fairways. Monogamy and a good golf game are not compatible. Banging hoors is a great for his career, ratings and his personal doctor.

Nice to see him playing respectably. I think he has a mini-resurgence next year. His last tourney of 2015 will be the PGA. He will have lots of time to get it firing.
the last thing he needs is more time away from competitive golf. more than anything else, he needs to build confidence in competition again.
Well, he isn't going to have many opportunities to do that this year. No way he plays the web.com+ circuit post fed-ex. This week is already a big pill I'd imagine.

lol. money.

you really know nothing about golf.

Why? Even if he wins they will say it's just another ham n egg open. He needs to win a major for thread to become great.
of course he needs to win a major for this thread to become great. that just shows you what a farce this thread has become. the fact that he shoots a 66 is news around here now. i get the long term perspective arguments and how him actually stringing a few decent holes together is a first step in what many hope will be a resurgence. Whether he is in contention to win this weekend is a hopeful footnote in the aspirations of the faithful.

However, the mere fact that people "hope" he is in contention or wins the who-cares-open so they can watch this thread explode says all you need to know about who was right and who was wrong. Him winning this event changes absolutely nothing about the narrative of this thread.

Any of you D.C. locals heading out to RTJ for the tourney?

I'm going tomorrow, figured I better catch Tiger on Friday because his chances of making the weekend are pretty slim.
I always go on Friday when it's at Congressional but RTJ is a bit too far out there for me. Cornhole one year from today at the 10th?
Had a blast today even though the field was pretty slim in terms of big names. We followed Tiger's group(Hass and Watney)for a good part of the morning and then tried to catch Fowler and a few others before calling it a day.Tiger actually looked pretty good today, had that strut going as putts were falling. The crowd was buzzing at how well Tiger did from about the 12th on.The course is just outstanding, beautiful walk with some really nice people.

Cornhole idea sounds great for next year!

A simple observation of fact is "griping"?

Golf is a process. It's about confidence. It seems to ebb and flow like life. He isn't going to go from OWGR 251 or whatever to Top 10 overnight or maybe even in a year or two. He may drop further in the rankings before he improves; we don't know. But a Top 25, Top 10, Top 5 or Top 3 is still a step in the right direction when it happens. A win is even better. You might say it means nothing because of where he's been at the top of golf in the past. This isn't about "get back to me when he wins a major" right now. Lifelong golf fans, students of the game and those who have played and know how hard it can be know that. We don't come here to see a thread blow up after he gets a few birdies, throws a fist pump or wins a relatively minor tournament. We're here to talk about Tiger.

The trolls will say, "It's a ham & egger win." "It's only three wins in a year." "Yeah, so he was lucky enough to win his 15th Major but so-and-so choked for him to win." "He has never come back from behind to win a Major." "He still hasn't caught Jack." "He's won some more but he was never as dominant as he was earlier in his career when others folded left and right, so Finless was still right." That's all low-hanging fruit for the quipsters.

Since the thread started, Tiger already got back to #1 in the world and won player of the year only two years ago. Let's see what happens. Certainly there will be more ups and downs. With all the great golfers, and surely more coming up through the ranks, it won't be easy, but it should be fun. And golf will still continue to be awesome whether Tiger is around or not.

:goodposting:

Tiger screwed up by making it all about majors. Majors are the yardstick but winning any PGA event is HUGE. Tiger just three behind Snead. Not moving the goalposts. Jack is clearly ahead of Tiger.

But all the great players nowadays win 1-2 times year. Tiger has 79 wins. It's insane. He had 8 in 35 tourneys in 2012-13. That right there is an incredible run.

Awesome

Before we all go too excited:

Only 20 guys in this tourney are in the Top 100. And only 5 guys are in the top 50.
Yeah, the Tiger fanboys may want to pump the breaks on this week's call of HE'S BACK!!!
You're missing the point. He shot a 66. It was his best round in a long, long time. This isn't about who else is playing.
It's about the course being easy. I'm sure he'd hit at least 16 out of 18 greens on a putt putt course, too. But those stats aren't that impressive when you think of the course. Compare him to how all the other crap players are playing. Because his stats aren't as good as theirs.

No. It really isn't. It's about whether he can drive the middle of the fairway or shank it out into the woods.

you are clueless. Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is freaking spectacular.

Everybody on tour can shoot a 65 here and there. If Tiger didn't do that occasionally he would lose his card (if he didn't have his exemptions)

buddy is at rtj following tiger. apparently on fire. -5 through 10, dropped a 50 footer on nine, has missed one fairway and one green.
:kicksrock:

Still, green shoots. When was the last time he shot in the 60s 3/4 rounds? If not for the one bad day, he'd be in the mix here down at the end.

Good progress.

I think "good progress" is what you look for in a 20-something golfer - not one approaching the age limit for the senior tour.

Where did I say it wasn't? I said it was an easy course. And that's pretty much a fact.

He stats don't mean anything if they are worse than the crappy players he's playing with. If he's hitting 75% of his fairways, that may sound awesome. But if the field is averaging 85%, his 75% means nothing. It's not that complicated.
