timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (3 Viewers)

17.04 - Barry driving to Provo to ensure his girlfriend won't get hurt again in Punch-Drunk Love - Romantic Gesture

I'm not really one for romantic films, but this partially romantic movie happens to be one of my favourite ever. The romanticness of the gesture doesn't exactly fit very nicely in a single scene though, but hopefully it's lack of sappiness will make up for that some.

14.19 Philadelphia (1993) (Courtroom Scene):

I waited as long as I could, but the drafters are just owning this category so far.

This is one of the most realistic courtroom sequences that I have ever seen outside of a real courtroom. In the first part, Mary Steenburgen depicts the detached, yet ruthless demeanor of a defense attorney with unpopular clients attacking a sympathetic victim on cross in front of a jury. This is an incredibly difficult feat to pull off correctly, and I have seen many hacks completely blow it (and possible the trial in the process). Steenburgen's performance is fantastic. Of course, Hanks is gold, Washington is superb (I love the casual "three minutes" offer when he's concerned that the judge might not want to keep going after he asks for five minutes of redirect), and there isn't one hacktastic acting moment in the whole scene. The reactions of the judge, jury members, and people sitting in the gallery are all picture-perfect. No yelling, no screaming, no shoulting over the judge - this could really happen, if the lawyers were skilled enough.

Bonus points for Washington's character's use of the defense's prop, the reactions of Jason Robards and the other law firm partners, and Hanks' smile to Washington at the end of the scene.

15.07 Gimme Shelter (1970) (Rock and Roll)

Jaw-dropping documentary about the Stones' 1969 tour, culminating in Altamont Free Concert and the death of Meredith Hunter at the hands of Hell's Angel Alan Passaro, who was later acquitted on self-defense grounds. This movie flawlessly captures the end of the all-too-brief "Summer of Love" era, and the beginning of a more sinister time in American history.

16.19 Lola Rennt (a/k/a Run Lola Run) (1998) (

)The title character, desperately needing money to help her boyfriend, enters a posh German casino, and bets it all on a spin of the wheel. I love Franka Potente's acting, her emotions when she wins, and the reactions of the nattily dressed patrons.

16.8 - Duckie lets Andie go to her dreamboat - Pretty in Pink (romantic gesture)

First, Duckie surprises Andie by appearing at the prom for her. Then, despite being in love with her, he tells her that Jack came alone and she should go be with him. The truest of true loves.

Except that the rest of the scene I'm talking about is missing. And that's not a good recording.

Round 15

The Lion in Winter - Movie about England

I nearly passed on this because it's set in France, but according to the judge, "This movie must be set and take place in England or be about English people away from home and retaining their Englishness." Of the latter, I say it certainly retains its Englishness, If the judge disagrees, I'll take the hit.

Hope I did not snipe anyone's monologue pick.

17.07- Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back- Filming a Scene

A lot of people hate this movie. I love it. My favorite movie with Adam Sandler in it by far - which isn't exactly a ringing endorsement I guess, but I do love it.

:goodposting: I'd even say Punch-Drunk Love is my favourite PT Anderson film, though I pretty well think all his films are great.

The one where they point out all the weight he's lost due to the sandwiches he eats regularly.

As gambling judge, am I expected to watch all these movies? If so, expect my rankings in 2016
You're not judging the movie, just one scene.
How could I possibly give the scene a fair judging without the proper context that the full movie would provide?
If you don't want the job, give it up. Either I'll find someone else or I will do it myself. No whining.
You should've declared the no whining rule prior to the draft. I'd have never signed up!

Didn't see anything about time frame in the criteria for this category. Obviously not high on current NY monuments, but it sure couldn't take place in another city:

16.16: Gangs of New York (NY movie)

14.03 Mephisto - Nazi Movie

This is still a very deep category, but this is one of my favorite movies, and I need to have it

The only Hungarian film to win an Oscar for Best Foreign Feature, this is a wonderful examination of the intoxicating allure of popularity, even amongst the evil of Nazi Germany.

Klaus Maria Brandauer plays an actor who ingratiates himself with the Nazi party in order to curry favor and stardom, with his greatest role being that of Mephistopheles in Dr. Faustus

But who is really the devil and who is really Faust?

16.03 Crash - Movie About Sex

No, not the painful racism is bad tripe, the one about car accident #######

I'm looking for a favor for those of us who are trying to keep this moving.

With us moving onto round 18,I assume that some people may see this as a place they could start to be skipped. If you plan on being skipped, can you please use #skip. It makes it very easy for me to search for in the morning when I put the list together.

Thanks

Is this some sort of new board feature?

it's probably just so he can search for the latest skips (adding the hash tag means the last nine million times "skip" was written won't show up)
