timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (7 Viewers)

We'll keep the order for now. I don't see any reason to change- I was simply suggesting that if the amount of skips grow, it's something to consider.

At no time will I reduce the clock down to 30 minutes, however, as I've discovered in past drafts that doesn't work. Also, the lack of subtitles in the new format makes it really difficult to make changes.

During this lull, I'm going to list my favorite picks for each drafter in this draft thus far. I will exclude Nazi picks (to keep the suspense up):

Acer- Dog Day Afternoon- New York

I love this movie. It's suspenseful, funny, and has great drama. The acting is brilliant, especially Chris Sarandon as the gay boyfriend. One of the best movies, IMO, of the greatest decade ever for movies, the 1970s.

Aerial Assault- Gimme Shelter- rock and roll

Probably because I'm such a Stones fan. But this documentary of Altamont, which includes the infamous death, is the darkness to Woodstock's light, and IMO a much better film. It helps to have great music throughout by some legendary performers.

17.17(?) The Long Good Friday - English movie

Bob Hoskins. Helen Mirren. London. Such an awesome movie and veddy veddy English.

Andy Dufresne- Ivana Baquero in Pan's Labyrinth-child actor

This was a stunning film, moreso in the movie theater because of it's extraordinary cinematography. But it works so well because of the emotional effort by this actress, who I had never before heard of. This would be a top 5 pick for me if I were the judge.

BobbyLayne- Tim Burton's Batman- Superhero

I think that in recent years, in the light of both the lousy sequels to this film, and even more the critical response to the Dark Night series, this movie gets overlooked. But it shouldn't, because it's a remarkable film. First off, Jack Nicholson was outstanding as the Joker, and Michael Keaton is great as well. But I especially love the look of this movie- Burton attempts to capture a dark,1939 World's Fair image of Gotham City, combined with German expressionism from the 1920s.

DougB- Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie

Hoffman lost out on the academy award to Ben Kingsley as Gandhi (also drafted by DougB), and that was a sham. Kingsley was fine as the Mahatma, but Hoffman's performance from beginning to end in that movie is one of the greatest acting jobs in cinematic history. Not only does he play great comedy, we also see his emotions in his eyes as Dorothy Michaels, and we see him change as Michael Dorsey from a chauvinist to a man who really tries to understand women. And we see him fall in love. It's sublime and remarkable.

17.15 Man, The Road -- Best Parent

Gave everything for his son. Lost his wife for him, fought through an apocalyptic wasteland for him, killed for him, ultimately died for him. There are points where he loses parts of his humanity trying to protect him, which I thought were the best parts of the book and the movie.

17.19 - Solaris (1972) - Outer Space Movie

Maybe it'll fare better in this movie draft than the last one. The isolation of deep space is definitely one of the keys in this movie - hopefully the judge got through the car going through the tunnel.

Dr. Octopus- "squeal like a pig" from Deliverance

Most movie shocking scenes are instant stunners that you weren't expecting, like The Sixth Sense or the one I chose. This scene is far more than that, because as a moviegoer you almost are expecting it, or at least something bad to happen- and what actually happens is your worst nightmare. Beyond shocking.

Solaris is one of my absolute favorite books in the whole world. It's in my personal top five without question, and everyone with even a passing interest in reading should grab it. But as a movie...I don't think it translated well. The imagery didn't come through, nor did the mental strain and anguish. It's an okay movie, but it doesn't approach how great the book was. The Master and Margarita is kicked around as an American film project every once in a while (Steindorff has the rights) and I think it would have the same issues. Breaks my heart./thebookwasbetterguy

17.22 Finish Him!, The Karate Kid (Sports Scene)

ETA: Couldn't find a clip to include "Sweep the leg," which should accompany this, obviously.

17.24 Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine, child actor

Little Miss Sunshine was nominated for and won multiple awards from numerous film organizations and festivals. It was nominated for four Academy Awards and was awarded two at the 79th Academy Awards: Michael Arndt received "Best Original Screenplay" and Alan Arkin received "Best Supporting Actor".[56] In addition, the AFI Awards deemed it the "Movie of the Year", while the BAFTA Awards awarded it two awards out of six nominations with "Best Screenplay" for Arndt and "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for Arkin.[57][58] The Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards,[59]Screen Actors Guild (SAG),[60] and Washington D.C. Area Film Critics[61] commended the film for its ensemble cast. Then 10-year-old Abigail Breslin was nominated for several Best Supporting Actress and Breakthrough Performance awards.

18.25 - Dreamcatcher, No idea what this movie is about.

What was normally an annual routine hunting trip for four long-time friends, takes an unusual turn of events. Henry, Beaver, Jonesy, and Pete, take in a disoriented stranger who they found wandering in the woods. They learn that the reason for his condition is that he has been taken over by an alien life-form. What they don't realize is that the remote area where they are located has been quarantined by the military, headed up by Col. Abraham Curtis who is determined not to let anyone (human or alien) escape from the quarantine zone. Twenty-five years prior, the four had rescued an autistic child named Douglas but whom they have always called Duddits. Although it is not something they have acknowledged, they know that they have a telepathic bond with each other and Duddits, and that somehow this is the key to their defeating the alien invasion.

Read that again. I'll wait.

Man, I thought I loved slow films before I saw Solaris, now I'm not so sure that I do.

For now I'm taking this in romantic gesture, though I could move it. FOR THE LOVE OF PETE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE BUT PLAN TO DO NOT OPEN THE SPOILER BOX.

18.9 Amour - romantic gesture

Yeah, that part where he smothers her.
