20.22 - Election - Classroom Scene

.Not sure how realistic the scene is, although I'm sure some teachers have gone to the extent of abusing their power to afflict students who annoy them, I'm sure for the majority of teachers it's nothing more than a fantasy. Anyway, Election is a great flick, and it has what's probably Matthew Broderick's second best film role after Ferris Bueller.

20.23 - Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash in Walk The Line - best portrayal of a real/historical person

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon performed all of the songs themselves, without being dubbed. They also learned to play their instruments (guitar and auto-harp, respectively) from scratch.

I really dig that movie. And Johnny Cash RULES!

21.04 - John Hurt portraying Joseph Merrick in The Elephant Man - Best Portrayal of a Real/Historical Person

Can't imagine how John Hurt managed to perform in that full body of makeup day after day, but he was spectacular. Also wanted to have David Lynch represented on my squad.

 
19.15 Twilight confronts Yogo, The Twilight Samurai -- Fight Scene

Scene here

The entire scene is worth watching, really. I linked to the beginning of the fight, though, which starts after Twilight and Yogo talk about their role as samurai and their place in the world. Twilight mentions that he was forced to sell his sword and came to the confrontation with a wooden one, which offends Yogo. This is the bit where the scene above starts at.

Twilight: I was desperate so I finally sold my sword. It was a fine sword I’d inherited from my father. But I figured, the age of the sword was over. I’m afraid this is just bamboo.

Zenemon: You’re going to kill me…with a bamboo sword?

Twilight: No! I learned short-sword from Toda-sensei! I meant to fight with that.

Zenemon: Short-sword? You mean to kill me with some kind of cheap trick? You’re not taking me seriously, are you?

Twilight: Wait!

Zenemon: I won’t have it!

The fight itself is wonderful. Minimal sword parrying, desperation, a strong emphasis on the environment around them dictating the form of battle, and real exhaustion.

Need some opinions from the house -- my Shocking Scene pick is from a nine-year old movie, but the scene is a pretty significant twist in the plot. I'm not sure if the scene is universally known, or if posting it will spoil the movie for some people. I'll post the specifics of the scene in a spoiler box, and let the house indicate whether or not the description can be "unspoilered".

21.05: Million Dollar Baby (Shocking Scene)

Maggie Fitzgerald (Hillary Swank) is fighting for the WBA women's boxing welterweight title against Billie "The Blue Bear". At the end of a round in which Maggie has come to dominate the fight, Billie sucker-punches Maggie from behind. Maggie's trainer, Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) had already placed Maggie's stool in the corner for between-rounds tending.

(scene runs from 4:50-5:11). Maggie is paralyzed on the spot, and is rendered a quadriplegic.
Director Clint Eastwood subverts decades of sports-movie convention with this scene, yanking the movie into an entirely different direction and resolution than what the audience was expecting. There could have been the Triumphant Ending, in which Maggie wins the title and all loose ends are wrapped up in the victory. It could have been the Dignified Loss Ending, in which the Blue Bear wins over a Maggie that left it all in the ring, with sundry built-in life lessons for the audience.

And then, there's the resolution that screenwriter Paul Haggis and Eastwood actually served up.

I still think Sarah Connor was a good parent. Just had...extraordinary circumstances.

I disagree. I regard Sarah as a strong parent. It's up to you, though.

I couldn't decide how this would rate as a Rock n Roll movie - at the beginning of the draft I had it as a possibility for the romantic gesture category - Rob finally makes a tape for Laura of things she likes to listen to.
