Titans 2018 (1 Viewer)

Im liking this hire the more and more I read. This guy earned his stripes. Came up the hard way and obviously has stuck around because he's smart and good. And to come out of Union City is a feat inside of itself. Union City is a tiny town in the northwest of the state with less and 10k people. There's nothing out there except some tire factories and reel foot lake. Salt of the earth. I hope he works out. I want him too.

What I gather is Grimm can't coach bad OL,can't coach them up so to speak. Trouble relating, frustration...i don't know why but it's a common sentiment people are saying. Titans better add some better players then.

A friend of mine said he heard Robinson call Matias a promising G. I didn't hear it and listened to same thing. All last year I wondered why he didn't play when he looked good in preseason, now new GM sees tape and thinks he looks promising...what'd ya miss Whisenhunt?

Also every time Robinson speaks it's like he agrees with fans from last summer- doesn't matter which player it's often the same thought- he stood out, why was he on the sideline.

I think they've decided Wright is gone and/or he has to accept much less to stay so they better plan to be without. Wyatt has an article up which sounds like they'll be drafting a WR, a top WR.

For the most part Bratkowski has been an OC and Robiskie a WR coach. Honestly Robiskie already looks like he doesn't know his place. He spoke of WRs needing to be physical and Bratkowski needing to kick him out of the WR room this year. This follows Mularkey saying it's going to be his offense, hiring Robiskie who can't wait to draw up plays and see them executed. Maybe it's growing pains with a HC that was an OC.

I am hopeful and do think it's interesting to have three former OCs and Michael (3 and a half?) drawing up simple plays.

I really like hearing the word simple often. DGB slow to grasp, Mariota young...it's good they get it.

Aggressive bloody nose football, that's the O style.

Second time I've said it- I'm not getting that they're going RB. It's either going to be WYSIWYG or a free agent they can't speak upon. It's been very curious how the new staff took over and the RB talk became virtually silent except some praise for Andrews and Fowler. Those two would be a rough aggressive backfield I suppose. It's just real odd that all the rook RB talk, esp Henry, shutdown completely. They are talking of other rooks at other positions. Maybe Mularkey likes the prospects of what they have and said we're good there? Why bother with no line, we need a line first?

Wyatt seems to love Shepard from OK. I wonder if he has any influence now. That would be DGBs practice teammate from the year before.

I'm almost sick of the Hugh Douglas quotes. It's as if they think he's Calvin. I wouldn't mind Robinson trading him just to avoid the painful upcoming year it would be if they truly think he's that special.

As per PK, Cannon Matthews left and signed with the Browns so Horton took his DB coaches with him. Titans already filled those spots anyway.

To reiterate, based on what they talk about- Titans looking at both lines, DBs, WRs

NHL All star game is in Nashville

Seems like the NFL reporters are either covering it or going so I expect some weak news days coming up.

Re RB: would they be able to land Doug Martin - and would they want to? Robinson knows him from TB so he ought to know whether the down years were on Doug, injuries, OL or Coach

Re Wright, let him and Douglas go.

Grimm and OL - could he be a draw on FA's with talent?

Douglas they're loving. He's not going anywhere.

I don't recall Grimm's lines that well. I hope so and hope you hit the nail on the head there.

I've wondered about Doug Martin too. Tampa is going hard at him to re-sign and I think they will. Reports are quite positive. I think that makes Alfred Morris the top FA when you include youth. Marshawn and Forte are available. Marshawn seems to be close to retiring. Forte would like to play for a winner. "Would like to" is enough of an excuse to not even consider the Titans if they don't fix their line. I see it as his out if he's asked. Hard to expect a twilight RB to come to TEN.

IMO the Chiefs have a RB or two available-ya don't have 3 star level backs, a nice guy on PS, a nice 4th that was praised just a year ago, AND another that's playing WR in Thomas...and then turn down a decent trade offer.

I'm not convinced the NFL is done with Joseph Randle. What was it? DWI arrest? Young guy that finally broke out- since when are teams only signing perfectly behaving players? Didn't I just watch Pacman and Burflict act like thugs? I've got a whole disconnect there where I'm thinking either I don't know the whole story or he will be on a team in 2016.

Morris is my fave but it's not a banner year for FA RBs.

Rewatching some games-

Really don't know why they gave up on West like they were Don Shula.

He didn't look bad.

Hunter looks very good. He (and every WR) is totally ignored for such long stretches but what there is to watch, guy is running his routes like they're drawn with perfect right angles. He's the only one (early) going all out full motor on those deep routes when they're running and all he's to do is to take a DB away. His blocks don't do much, but he is in the way and his man isn't getting to the RB. He really looks like such a good boy-like Whis and Munchak have ridden me told me to do the little things and then the rest will come. He's doing it...where's the reward? I bet I could watch 10000 hours of tape and no WR on any team plays thru every snap as well as he does. It is such an effort to show he's being a good boy. I'll tell ya he gets open on broken plays better than Wright. I don't know that Walker even needs to as he has two guys draped on him, but it's like Mariota gets under pressure and he either looks at Douglas/Wright then Walker, not even Hunter's or DGBs way. He's got a simple move where he comes back and puts the CB on his back posting up like a big man in hoops. Other times he's really running hard back n forth.

There's another guy that had a great camp and didn't get the love that was expected.

On a handful of plays each week, Wright just stops. Play isn't over and he's done. How do you not pull him?

This has been the big disconnect with Whisenhunt that Mularkey better fix in his 'new' O. "When there are no passes to the WR for a quarter, this guy..." let's not start any sentence with that in 2016. How's about they actually throw to the WRs a normal amount. Whis getting on some WR because after 11 minutes of being ignored he's lazy on his decoy route is really not the problem, it's just making a new one.

Good, keep Lamar Miller the hell away from this team! :)

I didn't mention him, forgot. My mistake

WOW!!! Amazing first hand report of the GM search written by one of the candidates, Ted Sundquist.

How do you fix the Titans? You look for leadership"

http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/2610257-i-interviewed-to-rebuild-the-titans-and-heres-what-i-would-have-done
I don't disagree with the conclusion but that article was one long whine
Agree 100%. Good points or not, he's bitter.
I didn't think they lacked leaders except for the HC. He lost them in 2014 and I didn't feel like he got them back.

No one has really given much 'credit' to Locker retiring. You're selling this guy to the team as the new franchise QB, Whis is supposed to be able to 'fix him', he struggles, and boom he's done. How could that not affect guys in the lockerroom?

Mariota, Walker, Griffin, Wright/Douglas, Casey, Morgan, even Mett in the spring, I saw plenty of guys working with the younger ones being leader or MM just being 'the main guy' and leading by example.

Lebeau- countless articles of players praising him, respecting him.

Croom and Jefferson-who didn't get results- got plenty of nice comments from players even though they rode them.

Reporters questioned the GM, never heard players doing it. New GM seems respected but he's new

Team pres is called highly intelligent every other week in a positive 'he'll figure it out' vibe. Everyone notices how hard he's trying to improve things for the fans(he's not GM we're not talking team/players) concession, stadium, new seats, promotions etc.

All I notice is the ownership is highly questioned and Whisenhunt. I have my doubts about Mularkey but at the time of this...a new GM and new coach were setup well IMO with leaders.

I think it all goes back to Kenneth Adams IV and whatever happened between he and his sis to make him go from heir apparent, to no I'm stepping in. Problems ever since. He was Bud's boy in every sense of the word. A very successful corporate attorney, I can't help but assume alot of the times where we say 'this is stupid' would never have happened on his watch. He made his own millions too, we're not talking some chump that inherited daddy's money.

If you google him and see some old quotes and such, I almost guarantee you'll agree it would likely be headed in a better direction.

I saw someone said 'if you're going to have coaches that may only stay a year, you could do a lot worse than a staff full of greybeards."

Ya know....I gotta admit that's true.

If there's some new staff for 2017, it is possible that the wealth of young players are glad they got to pick the brains of some ol' timers for a year.

As per Wyatt, Walker paid for all TEs to go to Hawaii. Fasano and Stevens couldn't go. Supernaw and Greene went. I thought buying Greene a ticket was very cool. He wasn't signed all that long ago and I'm not sure if the Titans have even decided if he's DE or TE yet.

Here's PKs article on Senior Bowl with another beneath it http://espn.go.com/blog/tennessee-titans/post/_/id/18147/titans-centric-thoughts-on-senior-bowl-developments

There's a bunch more on the web as seemingly every reporter went. I think I read 50 and they're not all that different.

My thoughts-

Why are you wasting so much time with Carson Wentz? Give me one good reason. Do you seriously think teams are fooled you might pick him? You could be spending that time on guys you might draft.

Why so many WRs? What's up? If Douglas is some gem in the coaches mindset and DGB is hopeful gem then we're onto Hunter and Wright. Those two are top athletes and experienced WRs. I highly doubt any WR not drafted in the first round will beat them out. They have always looked good to great in practice. TZ and McBride as young projects who hustle...the Titans will have to move on from Wright and/or Hunter for a young guy to come in and get enough reps and enough time to get acclimated to make an impact his rookie year.

I don't get the scat back 3rd down back stuff. McCluster is fine as 3rd down back, maybe even very good (in that role) by NFL standards.

Alot of high end Safety talk- Is Griff gone? And why have they been bringing Stafford along then? Lesser Safeties would be fine, always need depth but cream of the crop types?

OLB same- Is Orakpo or Morgan gone?

Why didn't they meet with that awesome G everyone was writing about all week? I noticed one reporter caught them chatting another said 'that was brief' so whatever transpired, I'm not counting that. Warmack is a bust, move on!

The TEs, I swear I swear Mularkey would have 53 TEs, what is with this guy!!!!

From my living room, it feels like they met with a dozen guys they might actually pick and 30 some odd guys they will never draft. Head spinning as my only thought of rationalization here is trading some "cogs" that I expect to stay,

What are your guys thoughts? Tunsil and Bosa was common, but got any trade theories?

I'm not the guy to ask (don't follow CFB) but picking #1 and having a franchise QB you pretty much have to get a LT. I can't remember any 3-4 DEs or OLBs going #1.

As an aside I'm still pissed on how things are playing out. Get a franchise QB - fire the GM, HC and hire the uninspiring care taker because he didn't get the kid killed.

Get a first time GM. Given the talent deficit left from the previous regime and the grey beards coaching (not to mention the uninspiring HC) - get another quality player at #1 this year, the fire the whole coaching staff come January 2017.

Get another high pick, hopefully neither of your two previous high picks are by now scarred for life, and hopefully the ownership situation have been resolved so quality coaches and players will want to go to play for the Titans, be it in Nashville, London or elsewhere...

I can't remember any 3-4 DEs or OLBs going #1.
Mario Williams and Jadeveon Clowney this century...curiously both by the same franchise.

(At least I think Houston was running a 3-4 for Williams?)

No OLBs in recent memory.
pretty sure Clowney was drafted to be a OLB which was questionable at the time.

Mario was 4-3 (I think)

The stud Aundray Bruce was a OLB. To the Falcons credit though, there were only 5 HOFers selected later including Tim Brown. and half the other 1st rounders made a pro bowl.

Rams fans that wanted Wentz are now dejected that the Browns love the guy...no no, just have Fish call his old team

http://www.turfshowtimes.com/2016/2/2/10864118/2016-nfl-draft-st-louis-los-angeles-rams-carson-wentz-connor-cook-jared-goff

It's absolutely perfect how much love Wentz got last week and the ensuing "I don't want to miss out" voices that followed.

Step right up, you can have the Titans pick

If the rumors get strong enough and the Browns actually want to move up to be guaranteed they get their guy- sweet, trade down twice!

New Orleans signed another CFL CB. Last year their best CB (maybe that's debatable) was a guy they signed from the CFL.

In 2014 and some of 2015 when I whined about McCourty and Bleeding and how they are 'right there' and do nothing but watch-make a play on the ball, tackle, do something! There's a lot of that going around in the NFL. Misunderstanding the rules and rule changes could be a reason. A lot of young players in sports can be "gunshy" maybe there's some variation of that.

I don't know what it is but teams keep drafting these exceptional athletes and CB and so many do nothing but run alongside the WR.

Somewhere amidst this is why I loved Riggs last year. He's high effort and gonna do something. He was a UDFA rook and he'd get beat but at least the WR had to work for it.

Ramble ramble...

The style of play in the CFL and Arena league too, I bet NFL teams could get tons of high effort guys like Riggs from there.

I'd like to see that become a trend in the NFL for the deep down the depth chart guys.

I have this understanding or tolerance of young WRs struggling and getting accustomed. I guess it's enough if they show on the field that they are a super athlete, just keep developing kid. I don't have that with CBs. That tolerance or understanding. Instead I'm yelling at the TV put your hand up, swat the ball, do something!

What do you guys think?

Do ya think adding a couple CFL or Arena CBs for camp each year is worth a shot? Something ya wouldn't mind seeing?

Nice article on Titans site about Cam and Steve McNair's boy.

Cam grew up with Steve as his favorite player and now his son's fave player is Cam. When the Titans played the Panthers and Cam signed McNair's son's jersey it was a big deal for Cam.

Do you think their style is at all similar?

Hey new guy, decide on who your coach is and the assistant coaches...I really wonder how much weight they gave his opinion.

Their offseason approach could easily be-

"Well it'd be nice to have a better OL" Fire Webster

"After Webster, I didn't think you would, oh I don't...Mularkey is OK. Me and him get along. Aww shucks all those coaches are good too"

Really dopey how this stuff comes out a smidge at a time since their coaching search

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/02/04/mariota-didnt-want-input-on-titans-coaching-search/

Interesting that they did discuss Kelly.

That is wayyyy too much weight to put on a rook's back

Anyone else realize Whis went to a team with a struggling rookie RB who didn't live up to his draft status, with a bad OL?

Other than CAM being a super sized/charged version of McNair?

I dunno, atleticism, grit.

I'm not sure about Cam being the leader Steve was. Oh and his fasion sense is highly suspect (can you imagine Steve McNair in zebra striped yoga pants even if they are from Versace?)

;)

IMO Wright of 2014 and 2015 at 7 mil is ridiculous. Wright of 2013 would be a debate.

If he's renegotiated and "just a player" not a star, then of course I'd want him around.

He's bitter or seems so since Whis came to town. Adding two WR coaches (OC and WR) is considerable for him and (if we see it) I hope he's happy. Like anyone in the world, I don't generally like their bitter self.

He has been poorly utilized and one of the many where I liked what Whis and Co said but they didn't really act upon it.

He needs to get the NFL playmaker treatment. In for some KR and PR, could be 5 could be 20 whenever they need a play. In for some carries, reverses to him, snap n throws to him and most of all put him in the slot.

He's not just some WR, kind of doesn't fill the typical role all that well. He's a playmaker though.

Loggains had him run 8000 4-5 yards and cut across routes which was wayyyy too many. Did it have to be weeded out of the offense though?

If they're doing anything that looks like a college O, let's see him and MM out in front.

I think he's got some ticky tack gotta take care of his bod injuries. Some of his injuries are serious and a reminder he's a little bugger, but he's gotta mature and take care of them feet. RICE, tape, whatever else is the NFL norm. Veteran WRs don't worry the team they won't play with a toe or ankle unless it's torn or ligament or turf toe. Minor stuff they have figured out how to treat and overcome and it's not even always reported.

Mularkey and Robiskie gotta realize he's not the tough player that can "tough it out" and play thru all that much. Those two or three starts where he barely played because he was in too much pain were garbage. It about shut down Turzilli's season, they never played the guy they got from the Texans and....it was a roster spot. If he took some big shot and sat, then I'd feel like well he tried. He didn't so I think there needs to be better honesty and communication.

Rotoworld:

In his most recent mock draft, ESPN analyst Todd McShay argued that the Titans should select Ohio State DE Joey Bosa rather than Ole Miss T Laremy Tunsil.

McShay wrote, "Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil would fill the team's biggest need," then added "but the move is to pull the trigger on Bosa, the best player in the class." It's understandable logic, but probably a sight more tricky if you're in the Titans' war room. Last season, Tennessee allowed 54 sacks, most in the NFL. QB Marcus Mariota's not going to do them a ton of good if he's broken in half. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Tunsil is probably the safer pick for that reason, even with Bosa's prestigious talent out there for the taking.

Sooo the Titans ownership came up in the Commish's state of the league address.

Underwood seemed to do a nice job "saving face" but in my mind at the end (of this article) he let one slip.

http://www.tennessean.com/story/sports/nfl/titans/2016/02/05/roger-goodell-nfl-wants-one-owner-represent-titans/79890388/

Goodell does not in anyway make it sound resolved and seems annoyed, which is curious because the Manziel stuff and 8000 Qs about the personal fouls didn't annoy him.

“We will try to encourage our policies to encourage (single ownership),” Goodell said. “We have to continue to work with the Tennessee ownership group to see how that’s going to conform with our policies. We’ll be meeting with our finance committee in the next few weeks and that’s a subject that will be discussed.”

Vague- what's discussed? Titans ownership?

He did say and it was like he's hammered this point home- there must be one active owner and they must be local. (Someone on radio said TEN is not represented if she's from HOU...idk about that, but )nonetheless there is a considerable issue an easy 'out' for the commish. Why not just use your millions and buy a TEN home Amy?

So Underwood does a nice job. We're working with the league blah blah good stuff, well said blah blah

but what was this:

“But we have never discussed the fixes we need to put in place where our ownership structure is concerned. We are continuing to work with the league on a daily, weekly monthly basis.”

Everything he previously said, today and other days...never? You're going to fix a prob before the league forces your hand and you never discussed it?

When Goodell or other owners hear that? Won't they be upset?

I'm hoping there's some miscommunication misunderstanding. That is a considerable dagger

So Oher allows his DE to get in too much and make plays and Finnegan allows a big completion and his WR has the best matchup to exploit.

Happy for them they made it, but can't say I'm surprised

Remember Whis didn't like "the fit" of Akeem Ayers with his defense, so he benched a starter and ultimately traded him to the Pats for a 7th?

Then how last draft the Pats got that 7th back as a compensatory pick for...Ayers. Which ultimately is zero risk

Anywho, I was wondering if that wasn't Robinson who outsmarted Webster

I doubt he's an option,

He's only got a short time left, gotta be that he wants to go to a winner. As far as overpaying, I don't even think you consider that with old free agents being added to a losing team.

Some are saying they don't need a G now.To them I say trade Warmack then.

Poutasi is the monkey wrench with draft guys insisting he's a T and Titans saying he's a G.

It'll be interesting what Robinson thinks watching film.

Regardless, give him one single position like RG and let him focus there. Make it a point to never have a 21 year old play five positions again. Yes I'm counting the one day "everyone" played C. Even without, 4 spots on the OL is way too much for a rook.

I'm afraid Mularkey tries him at RT again, tries him at LG and RG and...stop that. Make up your mind, be decisive and let the kid grow.

That PFF rating is garbage. They posted stuff similar a few times throughout the year and did not understand how Lebeau used the guy. Did they miss Polamalu? Some of those early games where their pass D was excellent he got bad ratings. How? They allow 150 yards passing and he's about playing LB he's so close to the LOS.

I felt like they hired someone NG to look at Titans games. DGBs good games were poor, his bad games were good...made no sense. Poutasi on the right, Watt rushes LG and Poutasi gave up a sack?

I am a big fan of them and really struggled with their Titans stats reporting this year-seemed uncharacteristic.

Stafford played dime LB and only a bit at S.

I wasn't convinced he is the guy here. He might be. They seemed pleasantly surprised how well he did as the dime LB.

This means Lebeau's QB of the D is now a vacant position.

I don't think I want the top CB playing S like Ramsey can.

Is there a free agent Safety to fill the void here?
What do you think their move is?

Horton's staff with former Titans coaches- Named Rock Cartwright offensive quality control coach, Louie Cioffi defensive backs coach, Ken Delgado assistant defensive line coach, Johnny Holland inside linebackers coach, Cannon Matthews assistant defensive backs coach, Robert Nunn defensive line coach, Eric Sanders defensive quality control coach and Ryan Slowik outside linebackers coach.

Maybe they'll offer Griffin to come back on a lower salary after he's tested the market.

Or maybe they don't have a plan yet

Griffin was released early in the morning and later that same day he was on PK's radio show in the afternoon.

By the time he was on the radio show, he already had (we want you, not $) offers by text from two former coaches.

“Last year is last year, we are starting fresh. Everyone has a clean slate,’’ Grimm said. “I want to see what they do when I am here.”

I think like PK said ummm nice line but no you have to evaluate them NOW and head into free agency and the draft with the results of your evaluation.

I did notice he contradicted himself a few times (in Wyatt and PK quotes) so maybe he was nervous. I think he knows better

Hoping to read that they made an offer to Stevens in the next week or two. Very fond of that player and as long as he wants to, I'd like to see him play his whole career in TEN.

Titans will have to tender offers to a bunch of ERFAs. Antonio Andrews would be one of them.

For them it's basically the UDFAs prior to 2015.

Once tendered they only get the NFL minimum. More in a bit....

There are a few WKU players that intrigue NFL teams, Andrews and Michael of course are touting them since they went to WKU.

There's a disconnect between was Webster great with UDFAs or do they flock to a lesser team where they have a chance. I don't care which, just make sure it continues Robinson.

I still get NOTHING from them regarding RBs, as if they're staying pat. Some think it's just not showing their hand at all. FBG emails seem to indicate this is a nice year for free agents RBs.

(This is one of the responses I got asking about RBs) Connor Neighbors will be good to go. Yep a reply about a backup FB. I did push that a little and get that they would like to use the FB better in 2016 but even that reply was hesitant meh.

To put in perspective their fake commitment to FBs in 2015, they have two of the top 15 highest paid FBs as per OTC

The NFL cap only counts top 51 players so (mathematically) teams can sign a zillion players to minimum contracts and all the 7th round and UDFA guys that make the minimum only matter (cap-wise) if they're in the top 51. As such, I expect every single ERFA to be re-signed on the Titans and every NFL team to re-sign their own for that matter.

I think the NFL has a goof with 7th rounders being part of their rookie scale and making the minimum, not sure if that was on purpose or just they spent so much focus discussing the first round that they blew off the 7th. Best description is there were a few UDFAs that made more than McBride.
