In his first stint with the Titans, wide receiver Justin McCareins learned the NFL ropes with help from some of the team’s veterans.

After agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with the Titans on Wednesday, he envisioned himself in a different role this time around thanks to his familiarity with offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger.

I think I could be a help to a bunch of the receivers who haven't had a chance to play with him, McCareins said. It will give me a chance to step into the leadership role and help guys prepare each week. ... And I look forward to doing that.

The Titans drafted McCareins in the fourth round in 2001 out of Northern Illinois and in 2004 traded him to the Jets for a second-round pick. McCareins had his best seasons with the Titans under Heimerdinger, who was also offensive coordinator from 2000-04.

It remains to be seen what kind of role McCareins, 29, will have on the field this time around, but he'll have an opportunity to contribute on a playmaker-starved offense.

His one-year deal is worth roughly $1 million and includes a base salary of $730,000.

I am excited to have him back, Heimerdinger said. Justin gives us someone who can catch it, make someone miss and get yards after catch. He also gives us some toughness in the run game, digging out defensive backs, and has the ability to help on special teams.

McCareins best season so far is 2003, when he caught 47 passes for 813 yards and seven touchdowns for a Titans team that went 12-4.

In seven NFL seasons he has 57 starts with 210 catches for 3,264 yards and 16 touchdowns. Last season he appeared in all 16 games for the Jets but caught only 19 passes for 232 yards with no touchdowns. New York cut him last month.

McCareins said he plans to return to Nashville on March 24 for the start of the teams offseason program.

I am just excited,he said. It is great for my family to get back to Nashville, where we had such great memories first time around. Getting back on this team, it is exciting to get back and contribute.

No one has said what my role might be and that is fine. And I would prefer just to come in and be a part of the group and have a great offseason and get myself ready to play. However I can contribute, whether it is a big role on this team or on special teams, I just look forward to getting a chance to be productive again and being the player I know I can be.

I think it is a great opportunity.

I don't think I have liked any offseason move the Titans have made in the past 2 seasons. Well, Crumpler seems to be a smart choice. So make it 1.

Titans are getting the gang back together...first Kearse, now McCareins. What's next, offering Haynesworth straight up for McNair. :pickle:

When VY scrambles I hope he goes to McCareins side for some good down field blocking, cuz that about all he's good for.

This is purely just a "let's see what you have" contract and he has no assurances whatsoever of even making the team. It is much like the Justin Gage signing last year -- which I didn't like -- but turned out great.

I think it is fine, but he only has maybe a 25% chance of being on the 53.

One year deal (so easily cut), he's only 29 and should still have skills, and he did well in Dinger's offense before. Low risk for potential decent reward, even if all he does is help the younger WR's learn Dinger's playbook until he gets cut.

this is the huge splash in free agency Titans fans have been waiting for!!
 who wants Randy Moss, Bryant Johnson, or DJ Hackett when you can have JUSTIN MCCAREINS!!!
All 3 are the same guy.
Im thinking this is great news for Jets fans.
They cut him. He wouldn't have been a Jet anyway.
Guys get cut and resigned all the time. But I was obviously making light of the situation.

Obviously a move by the Jets that turned out badly, but I hope he finds some success in his old haunting ground. Always seemed like a good guy.
