Titans GM Floyd Reese resigns

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

Titans General Manager Floyd Reese, the man responsible for building the team through the NFL draft and free agency, has resigned.

Sources familiar with the situation said Reese resigned this morning. His contract was to expire in February.

Reese served the past 13 seasons as Titans Executive Vice President/GM and was one of the faces of the franchise. He leaves with the franchise record for wins by a general manager with 111.

It is currently unclear how the Titans will fill the void.

Reese was responsible for assembling talent through the NFL Draft and free agency, and between 1999 and 2003 the Titans posted the NFL's best record with 56 wins over the five-year period.

After the 2004 season, the Titans were forced to release star players including cornerback Samari Rolle, receiver Derrick Mason, defensive end Kevin Carter and tackle Fred Miller as part of a salary cap purge.

The Titans followed up a 5-11 season in 2004 with a 4-12 mark in 2005, then got back to .500 this past season with an 8-8 record.

Of the 75 players Reese drafted from 1999-06, 48 percent (36 players) finished the season on the team's roster. That is the third-best percentage in the NFL behind only the Bengals and Ravens.

Last offseason Reese was responsible for the signings of safety Chris Hope, center Kevin Mawae and linebacker David Thornton, who were also key members of the 2006 team.

His 2005 and 2006 draft classes currently include a number of key contributors.

But there were also regrettable decisions.

The 2004 draft class is considered weak (five of the 13 draftees are no longer on the roster).

Tthe 2003 draft class that included cornerback Andre Woolfolk (1st round) and wide receiver Tyrone Calico (2nd round) hasn't panned out so well. Woolfolk played primarily on special teams in '06, while Calico was released before the season.

Also, only one player (defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth) remains from the 10-man draft class of 2002.

I maybe mistaken but wasn't the general consensus that Fisher & Chow wanted Leinart and Reese wanted Vince Young? If that is the case Reese deserves some credit, although his salary cap management and handling of Steve McNair was atrocious.

Bud Adams was the one pushing for Young. Reese's management of the salary cap since the late 90s has been atrocious, though a large part of that can be attributed to Jeff Diamond, who worked under Reese.

The drafts, especially the last few under Reese, have been horrid, Young being one of the few exceptions.

EDIT: Im one of the few who thinks he handled McNair just fine. People outside of the area didnt really get the whole story, but McNair really acted like a primadonna and was trying to force his way out of TEN. McNair wanted to show up to workout because he knew the Titans wouldnt let him, and thought the Titans would cut him. Smartly, the Titans locked him out and worked out a trade that resulted in a higher draft pick in June for him. Its one of the few things Reese has done that Ive liked.

If the Giants don't promote their own guy named Reese, I'd expect the Titans to. Back on Dec 6th they were reportedly interested in him

That's pretty early and obviously their current GM was still employed so ....

BTW Titans Reese had his moments. I agree he's stunk it up lately but they did go to the Supe and all. He just seemed to lose his touch IMO.

A wind-up monkey banging symbols together could do as much as Reese did. Good f'n riddance.
WoMI - good call.Bud being cheap will probably bring in a wind up monkey, which will mean the Titans will be rebuilding in 2009 again..... :lmao:
I'm interviewing for the job tomorrow morning. Press conference at 3pm CST at 1045thezone.

Will post a summary.

I think we could give it a good shot.:lamontpleasebringyourplaybook:

Press Conference:

New GM will have same duties. Underwood said GM will have final say in personnel, subject to Underwood and Adams.

[bTW -- A little birdie just called me saying the names Jerry Reese (NYG) and Phil Savage are names to watch.]

I wonder if he's getting canned for the VY debacle?
If he's getting canned for anything its drafting that fat POS LenDale White :X
Given that they fired the director of scouting, the string of subpar drafts over the past few years, combined with the negative sentiment of the McNair saga was probably his downfall. He somehow managed to escape alot of blame for the mismanagement of the salary cap, though Im not sure how.Listening to talk radio around nashville for the last hour has been infuriating. No one seems to be able to figure out why Reese was canned, and most are in total shock about it. Not really sure why, WMI, myself and others have been expecting him to be out for over a year now...I guess I assumed the public thought the same way.
