Titans' top pick moving to corner

Griffin primarily a safety in college

By JIM WYATT

The Titans said first-round draft pick Michael Griffin, a safety from Texas, could line up anywhere in the secondary.

When he takes the field as an NFL player for the first time today, however, he'll be easy to spot.

"We are going to line him up at corner,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said Thursday.

Griffin played most of his college career at safety. But going into the draft the Titans were one of several teams who thought he was capable of making the switch to corner at the next level.

With cornerback Pacman Jones suspended for the season, Griffin has an opportunity. But the Titans signed former Colts cornerback Nick Harper this offseason and Reynaldo Hill, the starter opposite Jones last season, is back. Coaches also liked Cortland Finnegan's play at nickelback last year as a rookie.

Fisher said moving Griffin to corner isn't necessarily an experiment.

"We feel like he has corner skills and we know he can play the other positions,'' he said. "So we want to get him as familiar as we possibly can at the position as soon as we can. I think he is best suited to play (cornerback). That's what we're doing, and I believe it is going to work out.''

The 10 draft picks and a batch of undrafted free agents will be on the field at Baptist Sports Park today for two practices at rookie orientation.

The veterans join the rookies next week for the first mini-camp of the offseason.

If they needed a corner, why not draft a corner? Especially one that was the Thorpe Award winner for the season and Griffin's teammate at Texas and still on the board?

Titans = :P

I heard this last night on NFL Network. They had Fisher on there and he said they drafted Griffin for his versatility. He played CB and S in college.

The way I see it is they actually drafted him to play S, however, he will play in place of Pac-Man until he returns. Then he will probably go back to S.

This way they kill 2 birds with 1 stone and didn't need to waste another draft pick on another DB.

Just my :P

They didn't listen to me when I said take Aaron Ross...tsk tsk

Does anyone really think Pacman will be back with them in 08??

I wonder if Merriweather's past spooked them. Because it sounds like they were looking for a safety with CB cover skills, which may as well be tattoo'd on Merriweather's arm. Griffin strikes me as more of a run-support safety than a cover safety.

I really like Griffin and I think he could be a stud safety in the NFL but I didn't see much in his games at Texas that lead me to believe he will be anything more than an average (if that) corner at the next level. They have to believe that there corners are absolutely horrendous to misuse Griffin in this manner.

I wish someone from the Titan's would come out and tell us what it is that they are trying to accomplish in this off season. It seems to me that they are in an overall (significantly?) worse state this year than they were at this time last year. Certainly their talent at the offensive skill positions outside of QB have regressed to the point that they may well be the worst in the NFL instead of just being bad.

Negatives: Lacks field intelligence and will bite on pump fakes and misdirection … Has a lean frame with marginal playing strength and needs to improve his training room habits (does what is asked, but needs structure) … Struggled with academics earlier and might have problems digesting a complicated playbook … Lacks the upper body strength and hand usage to disengage from blocks … Willing in run support, but will get walled off and washed out of the play in attempts to plug the inside lanes … Marginal tackler who prefers to take a side or grab rather than face up, wrap and secure … Generates a lot of pass interference penalties due to his penchant of constantly grabbing at the receiver's jersey heading down field … Lacks an ideal feel for seeing the plays develop and will need time to learn the proper techniques of diagnosing and reading keys … Has the speed to mirror receivers, but fails to generate the punch to press or the placement to reroute … When he uses a shuffle-and-bail technique, he is slow to come out of his breaks … Liability in zone coverage, as he is late to locate the ball and lacks a good feel for handling the switch-off … Needs to take better angles in attempts to close on the ball … Plays with good aggression, but will get out of control at times and then struggles to recover … Too much of a risk taker, doing a poor job of keeping plays in front of him.Griffin will move back to Safety if/when Pac comes back. If he doesn't come back for 08' I would imagine they will draft or sign a CB and move Griffin back to S unless he really excels at CB.

Never ceases to amaze me how they can make first rounders sound like guys destined for the AFL.
