Oilers/Titans owner Bud Adams has passed away at the age of 90. Adams died of natural causes here in Houston.
Weren't they talking about it all through the Houston game yesterday?

Bud Adams was the owner of the Oilers who moved the team to Tennessee, who reportedly may have passed this morning.

Bum Phillips was the Oilers coach, and father of current Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Bum passed away a couple of days ago and is the one they were talking about during the game.

Gotcha. Both being affiliated with Oilers and both 90 years old got me confused. Thx.

I'm so glad he moved the NFL to Nashville.

He's quite the character, wish his family well.
Although I grew up a Niners fan, glad Nashville has a team now and my son gets to cheer for the home team and go to the games.

Sounds like the plan is to split the team into thirds between his two daughters and then his son's family and that it was his vision for his grandson to take over the team.

Will be interesting to see what direction the team goes with over the next few years.

Bud always had the rap of not spending money. I don't really know how true that was, but he was an old man that was stubborn at times. Led to Fisher leaving. I loved Fish, though 8-8 for eternity was never truly exciting.

He teased Jax for several off seasons in the mud/late 80s. Who knows, maybe that paved the way for the league to take them seriously for an expansion team. At the time they were like the 47th biggest TV market.

Always respected the original AFL owners. The Other League made the game better. Lamar Hunt, Ralph Wilson and Adams stuck around, the other guys all sold off their interests. In the early years they were called The Foollish Club.

Actually they kept showing an inset picture of Adams with quotes or snips of him speaking about Bum.

The Saints were the (or another) team that was looking at Jax in1985 when the current owner Tom Benson and a host of minority owners bought the team and (re)committed to the Big Easy.

it's almost fitting that he and Bum passed away so closely
It is.

It should also be remembered more widely how much Bud Adams did for modern football. He and Lamar Hunt helped build the AFL and that helped build the modern NFL.

He was a difference maker and he left a wide swath. His signing of LSU's Billy Cannon, Heisman Trophy winner, was a cannon shot across the NFL's bow. Hard to accept his move from Houston, but in retrospect, I wish he had gotten that Championship vs the Rams.

Yep, Benson was furst up, for just one off-season. The Adams courtship played out over several years and the Jax folks really tried hard. I was stationed there at the time, and I thought he was serious, and it was a serious concerted effort. In the end it was the same result as the Baltimore Colts, St Louis Cardinals or the Falcons. The owners moved or got new stadiums/tax breaks, Jax got nada. Eventually they wised up and started a group to land an expansion franchise.

ESPN video on Bum Phillips from earlier this year.

I remember him as being the coach when the Oilers had Earl Campbell, and became one of the best teams in the league. Always thought he was underrated as a coach because of his "aw shucks" exterior.

Here are some of Bum's quotes, from Wikipedia:

  • "There's two kinds of coaches, them that's fired and them that's gonna be fired."
  • "I always thought I could coach. I just thought people were poor judges of good coaches."
  • "I've never seen a hammer and tong game like that one."
  • "The harder we played the behinder we got."
  • "Mama always said that if it can't rain on you, you're indoors." (Explaining why he wouldn't wear his cowboy hat in a domed stadium)
  • "Dallas Cowboys may be America's team, but the Houston Oilers are Texas' team."
  • "I never scrimmage Oilers against Oilers...what for? Houston isn't on our schedule." (Source: The Book of Sports Lists)
  • (To an official) "Hey, can I, can I tell you one thing? That's three holding penalties on one football team in a quarter and a half. (Pauses) That ain't funny."
  • (To an official) "Now, you can't do that! If you do it, I'm telling you you'll have more hell over it than a little bit."
  • (after playing the Steelers for the fifth time in two seasons and planning to meet them a sixth time) "The road to the Super Bowl runs through Pittsburgh, sooner or later you've got to go to Pittsburgh.
  • (20 years after playing Pittsburgh six times in two seasons) "Don't take long to spend all the time you want in Pittsburgh."[7]
  • (referring to Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula) "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."[8]
  • (referring to Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon) "That boy could throw a football through a car wash and not get it wet."
  • (when asked about Oilers RB Earl Campbell's inability to finish a one-mile run in training camp) "When it's first and a mile, I won't give it to him."
  • (when asked by Bob Costas why he took his wife on all of the Oilers' road trips) "Because she's too ugly to kiss goodbye."[9]
  • "One year ago, we knocked on the door. This year, we beat on the door. Next year, we're going to kick the son of a ##### in."[10]
  • of Earl Campbell, "I don't know if he's in a class by himself, but I do know that when that class gets together, it sure don't take long to call the roll."
  • "Respect all, fear none"
