Titans owner Bud Adams wants Peyton Manning, and said he is prepared to make a competitive offer to get him.

The issue, of course, is whether the future Hall of Fame quarterback wants the Titans.

Adams told The Tennessean on Sunday he has contacted Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, and is pushing for the former Colt to visit the Titans.

“He is the man I want. Period,” Adams said. “And the people that work for me understand that. They know who I want. I want Mr. Manning with the Titans and I will be disappointed if it doesn’t happen.”

Titans General Manager Ruston Webster, Chief Operating Officer Mike Reinfeldt and Coach Mike Munchak could not immediately be reached for comment.

Indications have been they don't share Adams’ passion to acquire the former University of Tennessee star. Last month, Webster said the Titans were happy with their current quarterbacks — Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker — when addressing the team’s potential interest in Manning.

That was before the Colts officially released the four-time NFL MVP, however. Manning has already visited the Broncos and is currently visiting the Cardinals. Several others teams have also expressed an interest in Manning, including the Dolphins.

“I hope to be one of the teams he looks at,” the 89-year-old Adams said. ”Since he went to school in Tennessee I think Tennessee is where he should be. I think he could play for two or three years. I think he’s the guy that could come in and turn this around for us.

“That’s why I am so anxious to get him to come visit with us and I want him on my team. I could sit down with him and show him what (we’d be willing to pay). If he would come (meet) with me he would be happy with what he’d get.”

Adams also said he would speak to Manning about staying in the team’s front office whenever Manning decides to retire.

“I want him to be with me the rest of his working period of his life,” Adams said, “even when he doesn’t want to play anymore.”

Condon could not immediately be reached for comment. Adams said Condon hadn’t decided if Manning would visit the Titans.

“He is all for having him come see me,” Adams said. “He just wants to make sure my people in Tennessee want the same thing too — Ruston and Mike and Mike. I am 650 miles away (in Houston) but (they) will do what I say to do because that’s the guy I want and I am going to make the decision.”

This isn’t the first time Adams has gotten involved in quarterback decisions.

In 2006, Adams made it known he wanted the organization to draft quarterback Vince Young with the third pick overall, which was against the wishes of then-GM Floyd Reese and Coach Jeff Fisher, who wanted Southern Cal’s Matt Leinart. Young played five seasons for the Titans, who released him after the 2010 season.

Adams said he’s been satisfied with Hasselbeck and Locker, and acknowledged the latter of the two is the future at the position, but stressed the chance to acquire Manning is a unique opportunity for an organization yet to win a Super Bowl.

The Titans drafted Locker with their first-round pick last year. Hasselbeck still has two years left on his contract after signing as a free agent last season, when he led the Titans to a 9-7 record.

“But I want Manning. I’d love to see him in Titan blue after watching him so many years with the Colts,” said Adams, the team founder. “I will be upset because if I didn’t get him. I want him. I am ready to do what it takes to get him aboard and I think he’d be the guy to get us into the playoffs.”

just posted how I cant wait to see him handing off to cj2k and throwing 2000/15 to britt in another thread.

:football:

If you really want someone you don't say you are prepared to make a competitive offer, you say you are willing to make the best offer.

Little late to the party Bud.

I'm sure Peyton wants the stability with a situation that everyone is not onboard with (GM/CEO/coach). What a mess.

I wonder about the timing of Bud's announcement after staying quiet all week. Did he just decide this or has he awakened from a week-long nap?

Wasn't Adams also the guy who insisted the Titans draft Vince Young when the HC and GM disagreed? Of course, Fisher wanted Leinart, so I guess it didn't really matter anyway.

I look at the Titans as being a front runner..AFC South, Good O-Line, Good RB, Stud at RB, weak division, and Bud willing to do what "Mr.Manning" wants as far as signing FA...along with the love affair that Peyton has with Knoxville...looks good to me. I also found the offer for a job after his playing days as a huge factor. If you have ever been to a Titans game vs Indy..You will see alot of Orange in the stands from UT

It's more complicated than that. Fisher wanted leinart because chow wanted leinart. The team was building to a power running game with timing patterns on passes. Drafting young meant changing the offense. Would it have worked better for chow and leinart? Who knows. But I know for a fact that wed of the draft leinart was the guy. Thursday at lunch they called bid to tell him and he overruled.

I don't see how you can look at any team he has not scheduled a visit with as a front runner? I will be pretty surprised if Manning is not signed or all but signed by the time free agency starts and with no visit scheduled at this time this looks like a long shot to me.

The titans are better than people realize but suffer from a severe lack of locker room leadership. Manning would be a great fit. But I don't see it happening.

Peyton Manning -- an all-American as a Volunteer -- is a legend in the state of Tennessee.

The first curveball in the big game for the services of Peyton Manning has been thrown. And it's an 89-year-old owner on the mound.

The Titans' Bud Adams told The Tennessean on Sunday that Manning "is the man I want. Period. And the people that work for me understand that. They know who I want. I want Mr. Manning with the Titans and I will be disappointed if it doesn't happen."

For the last few weeks, Titans sources have held firm that the club planned on moving forward with their current arrangement at quarterback, with veteran Matt Hasselbeck mentoring 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker. The club likes the relationship the two have built, and foresees a smooth transition from one to the other down the line.

But the wild card was always Adams. The theory held that if Manning or his agent, Tom Condon, reached out directly to the owner that he would jump all over the opportunity to pursue the future Hall of Famer.

As it turns out, the conversation between Manning's camp and Adams happened, even if in a slightly different fashion than the process outlined above. Adams sensed a possible fit, and told The Tennessean that he was the one that reached out to Condon personally.

The potential match makes sense on several levels.

First, Manning is a legend in the state, having been named an All-American at the University of Tennessee. Adams is very aware of the marketing opportunities that Manning would open up in Nashville.

Second, Manning's wife, Ashley, is also a UT alum and happens to also be a Memphis native. While the football part of the equation is important, sources from several involved teams have said one factor that might be tough for teams in the West -- like Arizona, Denver or Seattle -- to overcome is convincing the quarterback to move his young family. That won't likely be a deal-breaker, but it could be a tiebreaker.

Third, the Titans have a head coach in Mike Munchak who was is a former player and understands how to handle veterans. Then there is offensive coordinator Chris Palmer, who has a relationship with the Mannings dating back to when he was Eli Manning's position coach from 2007 to 2009 with the New York Giants.

Fourth, Tennessee has some $30 million in cap space to get Manning additional help on the roster.

Last, but not least, the Titans play in Manning's familiar environment in the AFC South.

Hasselbeck has a year left on his deal, and the Titans would likely try to continue to develop Locker behind Manning if it were to come to pass.

At this point, Tennessee's chances might not be all that great, but the owner's involvement makes the Titans worth watching.

Seriously...why the wait? Everyone got a four day head start on the Titans.

The Jake Locker era is getting off to a rough start.
So he sits for two years. So what?
According to Polian, Manning has 4 more good years left in him so it could be longer than 2 years. But I doubt Manning goes any were near the Titans unless he wants to play against his former team twice a year. I was referring to the message that Bud Adams is sending. "Manning is the man I want. Period" Not a great vote of confidence in his current QBs.

If it appeared the Titans had their #### together (even in the least bit), I'd consider them the favorite.

The way things are coming out (with owner & CEO/GM/coach all in a different book altogether) comes across terribly in that they have absolutely no planning. Adams been asleep in the nursing home the past week?

Him coming out of blue, acting like Peyton is his long lost son, is creepy to say the least.

Bud Adams, aspiring to be Al Davis 2.0. Wonder who he flips the bird if Manning signs with another team...

Why do you get the feeling that Bud Adams had had no prior conversations with team personnel execs before that public statement?

I would be :wall: if I worked in the Titans front office right now.

Something with the old AFL owners...that Buffalo guy isn't that stable either. Anyway, he is not the constant meddle, but really interferes randomnly. Houston fans are pretty sure that his fascination with Young was partly, if not largely, an attempt to stick to the city of Houston (again).

Sad as it is to say, this is the classic case of an older businessperson slipping when it comes to agility in business and people management. Basically, at the 11th hour, he decided he wanted to enter the Manning Sweepstakes, and then threw his management team under the bus with his "I expect it to get done or I'll be disappointed" comments. If you really wanted a good chance, you should have entered on Wednesday, not Sunday morning (or Sat night). There was also a bit speculation on Sirius this morning, that this may be a ploy to appease the TN fanbase. They may want to stay with Locker and Hass, but needed to make an effort to get Manning, so the fans would not turn on the team. By entering now, they have little chance of getting Manning, and can say they made an effort. Again, it is speculation, but makes sense. The one thing that would make this an odd strategy is that I have not come across any articles about the TN fans clamoring for Manning. Any homers have any insight on what the fanbase as a whole wants?

I'm so glad Houston got rid of Bud back in the '90s. Bud is 100 times worse than Al Davis ever was, at least Al and some experience in the game. I bet Munchak is hoping that old ******* croaks before he gets the blame for one of Bud's control freak bad decisions.
