Steelers to open 2009 season with Tennessee

Monday, March 23, 2009

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers will open the 2009 NFL season with a game against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday, September 10th.

The game, which the NFL will officially announce later today, is the traditional first-game of the kickoff weekend. The Super Bowl winner traditionally hosts the season's first game on Thursday night. It will air on TV on NBC.

The Titans were the no. 1 seed in the playoffs last year and the Steelers were no. 2. Baltimore upset the Titans in Tennessee and moved onto the AFC championship game at Heinz Field the following week. Ravens officials reportedley asked the NFL not to schedule them for the Thursday night opener against Pittsburgh.

I will be interested to see how CJ matches up against last year's best defense. Will Mendenhall have his coming out party? This will be a fun one!!!

Ravens were tired of being spanked by the Steelers on national tv.

Ravens ain't scared, we beat you guys 4 out of 5 I think until last season and with a rookie qb we took you guys to the last minute. Maybe now the Stillers will have to play on primetime in Bmore which they haven't had to do in SIX years.

Thats exactly what they are. They begged out of a game with a Rival to the league office. Thats about the most wimpiest thing Ive evert heard of a team doing in the NFL.
They're still gonna play two times this year, doesn't change much but time and place. Seems smart to me to not play when it's not advantageous to your team if it can be helped.
