NFL has to do the right thing here, and I think that likely means shutting him down. Seeing him in the fencing response was awful a few years ago, and just plain frightening tonight. At some point, it's on the NFL. The optics of Tua coming back and that happening again...nobody but the NFL to blame.

I'm already a parent who won't let my son play football (may have felt differently a decade ago). But we watch every weekend and he loves fantasy. But I refuse to participate in watching and supporting a sport that puts profit and gain above concern for humanity. I'll drop this sport, no problem. And I don't think I'm alone.

I think Tua played his last game tonight.
How long should the NFL shut him down?
Would you let him back on an NFL field?
I think Tua will actually try and play the minute he can get cleared
Hope I'm wrong
1. I want doctors telling me and the NFL, publicly, that he can play and do so safely (at no greater significant extra risk than where he stood prior to his succession of concussions).
2. I can't answer that question, but if he were my kid, I'd say hell freakin' no.
3. I agree. That's why the league has to protect him from himself. But the league also has a brand to protect, and if he goes out and does it again, perhaps to some lasting detrimental effect, the league may have some blood on its hands. I would think the league would want to protect against that.
4. I may be wrapped up in the emotion of the moment, but I think you'll be proven wrong, just as you wish.

LOL the NFL can't forbid a player from playing because of injury concerns. Among other things, I'm fairly certain that would violate the CBA.

I get that you don't think he should put himself at continued risk. But if the doctors clear him and he wants to keep playing, he's gonna. Period.

even the Niners in the regular season
Have you been watching the 49ers games the last few years? Not remotely accurate.
you cut it in half “even the Niners in the regular season and the Niners in the playoffs”

aka the same as what you posted, ie niners great in the regular season and not so much in the playoffs
They had a huge comeback win against the loaded Lions to advance to the SB, where they had a lead on the Chiefs for most of the game until one of their best defensive players tore his Achilles.

The year before they beat the Packers in GB without an offensive TD. Didn’t they also beat DAL?

I dunno - they’ve gone to the NFCC a few times and the SB a couple times. Had to beat some awfully good teams to get there all 4 times.

I just don’t see the analogy to the dolphins.

This won’t happen. Tua will play when cleared.

The only question is with now multiple severe concussions, when will he be cleared.

He immediately went into the “fencing position” which was a clear sign of TBI. Brain bruise. It could be IR, 6 weeks or longer. I’m not a brain doctor, so I can’t tell you how long it’ll take to heal. It’s scary stuff though.

So yeah - league can’t really say “you can’t play”, but the doctors can.

Barry Jackson's article about concussions makes me think Tua will go on IR, 4 weeks minimum.

I found this interesting.

>>Cantu — one of the founders of the Concussion Legacy Foundation and Medical Director and Director of Clinical Research at the Cantu Concussion Center at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts – said the concussion clock “starts at zero” for Tagovailoa in a new season.

“If you put a great deal of months between concussions, you’re much more likely to go back to what your baseline is [before that stretch of concussions],” Cantu said. “If he has a fourth [overall] concussion… that would still be his first [of the season]. There’s not the science to say that you should be two or three weeks more conservative. But common sense would say rest him a little longer” than others who experience this type of concussion for a first time.<<

This is Steve Young 2.0, but even more egregious. Steve Young's last play in the NFL resulted in a concussion in 1999. Sure, he had a longer career, but science has come a long way since then. Today's science may have prompted Young to leave the sport sooner than he did.

I don’t get that at all.

The Dolphins last won a playoff game in 2001.

Last time they went to a conference title was 1992.

Super Bowl 1985

Won a Super Bowl 1973

That’s such BS. CTE is a real thing. How many concussions did we actually know about in his career. This was not even a bad hit. This was typical stuff we see often. He is highly susceptible to head trauma.

Anyway…..he will do what he wants. I think he is bat **** crazy
To keep doing this and risking brain damage and a life long disability.

Then again…..you can say that about every player.

Personally I think Tua should retire.

I know it’s crazy talk. But it’s basically LT in Any Given Sunday. One hit and he’s a vegetable. And yeah, you can say that about anyone (see: Hamlin), but those are flukey - multiple concussions might just not heal. Tonight’s hit wasn’t particularly violent. You don’t usually see guys get KTFO from that.

I’m worried abut the dude having a future. Being able to walk. Being able to remember who he is.

But he’ll probably come back and play. It is what it is

I agree with all of this. I believe the concussion protocol is the only guideline the league has here. so it is up to his doctors. After watching that play again, I think there's a significant chance he has a concussion and a neck injury. So he could clear the protocol and still be down with a neck.

I’ve only seen 2 fencing responses. Both from Tua. He’s looking at major CTE. Don’t become Junior Seau, kid. No disgrace. Live a happy life with your family.

I also agree with this mostly. As I recall CTE isn't caused by a few major concussions. It's caused by 100s, even thousands, of blows to the head. But yeah, time to shut it down. No shame in that. I hope those nearest to him are relentless with this advice.

with repeat head injuries, does the league use outside doctors to clear him, or team doctors? If he does play again, would the outside padded helmet help?

This just in: football is a violent and dangerous game.

Unless y'all want the game we love to be replaced by flag football, I submit that this is the cost of business, for Tua, for players, for the league and for the fans.

I'm confident Tua and his doctors will make the right decision, but then I don't prescribe to a philosophy that it's righteous to sue McDonalds because hot coffee is too hot. Personal accountability is just that, and the PC police can go sell crazy somewhere else.

Miami can’t bring in a statue with this offensive line. What’s Heineke up to these days? They’ll probably just roll with Skylar.
Does it really matter at this point. Their season is over.

This. In the history of the NFL no team has lost their starting QB and gone on to win a Superbowl with their backup.

NY Giants and Hostetler down?

Oh wait, just thought of Brady and realized you were being facetious :)

Tom Brady. Kurt Warner. Nick Foles. I've been sitting here since he posted it wondering just how many there are.

Sarcasm just goes right over peoples head here. Jeez.

That coffee was served at a 180 degrees, she went into shock and had severe burns. That was a very legitimate lawsuit.

Not only that but McDonalds had 1,000s of complaints about the coffee being too hot, so they were put on notice and continued to serve it at temperatures higher than required.

My experience with doctors in law practice is, usually, a doctors diagnosis runs along the same lines as the person paying them.

I don't think the league can keep him from playing, but I think the coach can say he's not playing anymore for the Dolphins. If he really cared about him, of course.

I'm concerned as to how easily Tua was concussed. It didn't seem like a very hard hit.
It seemed like what a RB might experience several times in a game and think nothing of it.
It seems that, for whatever reason, Tua is more prone to being concussed than the average football player.
Unfortunately I don't think there is any fixing that.

Does personal accountability extend to folks who may have sustained brain damage? Or does society sometimes have an obligation to help those who might not be able to competently help themselves?

Yeah I understood it was sarcasm. It just raised an interesting question of how many backup QBs had won Super Bowls.

Backup quarterbacks who won a Super Bowl:

Earl Morrall- Colts- Super Bowl V
Roger Staubach- Cowboys- Super Bowl VI
Terry Bradshaw- Steelers- Super Bowl IX
Jim Plunkett- Raiders- Super Bowl- XV
Doug Williams- Washington- Super Bowl- XXII
Jeff Hostetler- Giants- Super Bowl- XXV
Kurt Warner- Rams- Super Bowl- XXXIV
Trent Dilfer- Ravens- Super Bowl- XXXV
Tom Brady- Patriots- Super Bowl- XXXVI
Nick Foles- Eagles- Super Bowl- LII

Depends on who in “society” is making the decision. But in most cases “society” needs to stay out of peoples personal business.

Guys like Staubach and Bradshaw were embroiled in QB controversies, so I probably wouldn't count them. I understand they technically didn't start the season, but they also didn't take over due to injury as far as I know.

Who did Plunkett back up?

I don't know enough about the new helmet, but I wonder if it would have made a difference. Unless it affects his vision or throwing, not sure why he wouldn't opt to wear it. I think I'd wear it even if I was the punter. Protect the half-century of your life after football.

>>The #Dolphins had a team pass-blocking grade of 30.5 last night, their lowest in any game since October 2022<<

I knew it was a bad performance. Give some credit to Oliver & Rousseau & Miller and the Bills. We suspected the IOL was bad at pass blocking but RT Jackson had problems too.

BTW, last week the Miami oline had a great PFF grade vs what was supposed to be a good JAX dline.

Heat is supposed to be an issue. It was hot and steamy last night, everyone was sweating.

BTW, I recall Bill fans in the ARI-BUF game lamenting poor play from their dline early in that game. Last night, Oliver was a force, we know Greg is great, and Miller may have returned to form.

Seriously? In live action I thought it looked bad. Seeing the replay from the opposite angle I thought it looked much worse.

Wasn't Hamlin's fault at all. He was coming toward Tua and they collided at an awkward angle

This is a really tough situation and possibly one that the NFL should get involved with. I would imagine if Tua could retire with a large sum of money then he would strongly consider it. I would imagine if Dolphins could allow Tua to retire and not have to pay anything then they would strongly consider pushing him towards that. I just imagine a doctor will not say he can't play ever and I am not sure if I a doctor says "it is your choice but I would give it up" counts as something to guarantee his full contract. I am sure the Dolphins don't want to pay $100M for a QB to retire but they may be more agreeable if the NFL says "pay him the money and we will make it up to you somehow" like removing the salary cap hit or getting a comp pick.

The NFL can’t just waive salary cap rules to be nice

That coffee was served at a 180 degrees, she went into shock and had severe burns. That was a very legitimate lawsuit.
I know it’s getting off topic, but yeah, the coffee was hot enough it literally fused her labia together. And all she asked for was like $30k to cover some medical bills. It was the jury that awarded her a ton of money. Probably not the best example to compare that to this when talking about personal responsibility. She had no clue the coffee was THAT hot but McDonalds did.

In this case, Tua knows the risk and is choosing to get paid a ton of money and so far has chosen to accept that risk for a lot of money. But we’ve also decided as a society that employers have a lot of leverage/power over their employees and that they should protect employees from themselves in all sorts of ways. The question is how far should that extend?

don't prescribe to a philosophy that it's righteous to sue McDonalds because hot coffee is too hot. Personal accountability is just that, and the PC police can go sell crazy somewhere else.

I don't feel like looking it up, but I'm pretty sure there was actually some sort of law broken in serving a beverage that hot, as well.
