Todays College RBs (1 Viewer)

Every year my keeper league does a "Developmental Draft" after week 8 of the NFL season. You have 2 spots where you can draft and hold a college player until he makes it to the Pros. Portis, P Manning, AP, R Moss and many others go this route. If you are willing to sit on a guy for 3-4 years, frosh are great options (AP was held onto since he was a frosh). I prefer Juniors and Sophmores, but that just may have been from being burned by clarett. :goodposting:

How does this years crop of NCAA RBs measure up? If you could take a player or two that you knew would be a star in the NFL who would it be?

RBs are the most valuable so I am looking for thoughts and insite on them but wont discourage WR talk either.

Thoughts on these guys?

Javid Best - Cal

Javarris James - Miami

Ryan Matthews - Fresno

Dion Lewis - Pitt

Tony Gerhart - Stanford

Ryan Williams - V Tech

Ben Tate - Auburn

Anthony Dixon - Miss St

Jacquizz Rodgers - Oregon St (I think he may be too small)

Noel Devine (size a concern too)

Any top names I missed?

FYI some players are already taken from previous years drafts. How do they stack up to the available players?

Kaleb King RB Georgia

Evan Royster RB Penn State

DeMarco Murray RB Oklahoma

Joe McNight RB USC

C.J. Spiller RB Clemson

Mark Ingram RB Alabama

Jonathon Dwyer RB Georgia Tech

Charles Scott RB LSU

thanks

If Best can put on about 10 pounds and not lose any quickness or speed he will be the class of the draft. He'll run a sub 4.4 at the combine no problem, but will need to convince the NFL that he can carry a little more weight.

I think Ingram and Dwyer are 2 and 3, but not sure which order.

Dwyer's likely the most NFL ready. Too bad for him his team has rushed the QB over 60% of their plays this year.

James Starks from Buffalo?

He was a monster last year but hurt his shoulder and will miss the whole year this year (his senior season). Kiper had him listed as a late 1st-2nd round pick before the injury....could be a sleeper

You guys need to keep the name Hardesty in your heads. He is a beast at Tennessee. I have firm belief he'll be rolling on Sundays.

Quizz Rodgers is the real deal. "too small" doesnt really mean anything. ask Sproles.
Noel Devine is atop the list of dimunitive RB's. Him and Sproles truly look identical on the field in stature and in how they play. Neither really get hit hard because defenders rarely get a solid lick on them because of their shiftiness and low center of gravity.

any thoughts on any of these guys? Best is a name you hear a lot. Williams fumbled away the game tonight, but does he havea future? Is the competition strong enough for matthews to get some nfl consideration?

Yep. I'm not contributing to the conversation like I used to, but this is one of my favorite backs in the draft. He won't pass the BMI test and how he tests otherwise is going to dictate most of his draft story, but the kid has a ton of game. Kiper had him that high because he was talking to scouts who listed him atop the class, as in RB1.

I know he's been in the news lately for the strange injury but Stafon Johnson has really impressed me every time I've seen him play over the last couple seasons. Of the backs mentioned so far I really believe he has the skills that best translate to the NFL game. He definitely has the size and open field speed to go along with above average vision. Runs very well inside/outside and even though McKnight gets a lot of the hype, its Johnson that was used more often in the red zone ...one downside is that has a bit of an upright style but as we've seen recently with guys like Chris Johnson it may not be something that holds him back. Like I said he doesn't get a lot of hype due to the crowded USC backfield but if he can come back from the throat injury then he's one to keep an eye on for sure.

Ryan Mattews is a STUD! In high school I think he set the all time CA state records for rushing and TD's. People were worried that he would be an academic non-qualifier so a lot of schools backed off from recruiting him. Plus he is from Bakersfield which is a pipeline for Fresno St. players. He was awesome as a freshman at Fresno and was hurt last year, but this year he leads the NCAA in rushing and I think he has only played something like a handful of plays in the 4th quarter of his last 3 games. Against Boise St. he had over 220 and 3 tds.

I was thinking the other day of who he reminded me of and I would probably have to say a cross between Robert Smith and Curtis Martin

Agree on Ryan Matthews. And sounds like he is going to jump to the NFL after this year. I think he's a Round 2 pick at the latest.

My money has been on Devine since his high school days, as long as there is minimal press (thanks for leavin rodriguez!!) and Mel doesnt make him the man (isn't doing so now)....he will be a steal on keeper/auction draft day in my book.

Look at JR Daniel Thomas - K-State. Has only been playing RB half a year. Goes against a tough OU def on national TV this weekend.

Agreed. I could see him end up RB1 or RB5 depending on how he tests. Just from watching these backs casually this year, I think Best and Spiller are pretty much the same guy and I consider these three the most talented draft eligibles. Because Matthews is different I cannot decide if I like him best or 3rd. Also, fwiw, I think people choosing between Best and Spiller are a little silly. There's nothing on film that really separates them. That will depend on their eventual teams and I guess what's between their ears.

The Freshman Bryce Brown is better than Hardesty.
I disagree, bigtime. He may end up being better, since he's only a freshman, but Brown can't hold a candle to Hardesty right now. Especially as an NFL prospect, since Brown is so small.
LOL, Brown is 6'0 215 as a Freshman. Brown has or will have perfect size. Brown is a powerful runner that can wear down a defense. I'm not sure who you were thinking of, but obviously it wasn't Bryce Brown.

I don't know what Ingram runs in the 40...but I've watched him a lot this year and he is very, very impressive! He is a great receiver out of the backfield, he runs with excellent vision, he's very patient, and he runs with great power/pad level. He reminds me a lot of Brian Westbrook watching him actually. I think he'll end up being one of the very best RBs in this class if he comes out after this year.

Here are his stats so far this season thru 8 games:

Rushing - 153 carries for 1,004 yards(6.6 yd average) with 8 TDs

Receiving - 19 receptions for 186 yards(9.8 yd average) with 3 TDs

Total - 172 total touches for 1,190 yards(6.92 yd average) with 11 TDs

By the way, he has 0 fumbles in his career at Alabama on 536 total touches...rushes + receptions from last year and this year.

I'm an LSU fan...so don't think I'm pumping up Ingram because I'm a Tide homer...I just think he's an elite talent..

Ingram was held onto from last yars draft. not too many exciting picks this year. Looks like BEst will go #1 to the team who already has Dwyer from last year.Dez Bryant may get a chance in our draft, and maybe another wr or 2, but i prefer to go after a soph and jr rb for 2011 and 2012

One guy I am curious about is Anthony Dixon of Mississppi State. Since he plays in my home state, I have seen him a lot. The guy is 235 pounds and is the all-time leading rusher at MSU (I know thats not the same as USC but its a BCS team). He hit Kentucky for 252 yards on 32 carries Saturday night. That's with 8-9 men in the box. The guy also has good hands but the are using the Florida spread offense since Dan Mullen came and don't throw to him that much. My guess is he is not real fast and he isn't asked to block. But he breaks off long runs against SEC defenses a lot. I think he could be productive for someone needing a pounder. I.E. Texans.

You said you are not looking for freshmen, but let me pimp Bernard Pierce (Temple) for a minute. Out of the Philadelphia (Glens Mills) area. He likely would have been a bigger recruit but during his sophomore year, he was court ordered to attend the Glen Mills School, a high school for teenagers who need to be "straightened out." He only had to go for one year, but chose to stay for his senior year too because he felt he grew up a lot in his junior year and that it would benefit him to stay there. Good call. After graduation, he decided to stay in Philly to play collegiately.

True frosh - 18 yrs 5 months.

Great size: 6'0 212

Great speed: Pennsylvania state high school indoor champion in the 60-meter dash and then pulled the impressive double of winning the state 100-meter dash in the spring season.

He began the season as the #2 RB. He became the starter in week 3 after Temple started 0-2. Here are his stats...checkout weeks 3-8 (the games he started, and the Owls are 6-0 over the same stretch.)

for the year, he now totals 164-1033 (6.3 ypc) 11 TD, zero fumbles. This kid just seems to be getting better and better each week. He is much better than the MAC competition around him.

Compared to Dickerson in an article 3 weeks ago: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/271708-...ed-to-dickerson

6'0 212 with sprinter speed, good vision. Keep an eye on him...

Hmmm, it was definitely Brown. That must just be indicative of how big Hardesty is, because when Brown comes in after him he looks like a stick.

I know that they are listed at the same size, but I agree with this, Brown looks very small. Hardesty's frame is much bigger looking.

:goodposting: If he goes to a ZBS team this guy could be a beast, once he gets the ball there is absolutely no hesitation.
