Tom Coughlin's Presser on Jacobs, Ward, Etc. (1 Viewer)

How much did Brandon Jacobs do today?

Brandon did everything.

How did he look?

He looked okay. He moved around pretty good.

So he will be ‘probable?’

No, he will stay questionable.

That is the kind of thing that on Sunday morning you might make a decision on it?

In all likelihood it will come down to that.

Even if he could go would it be more likely you would have to split him a little bit with Derrick Ward?

Definitely. He just obviously needs the work.

Is there a danger with that kind of injury if you rush back?

We have to take all those things into consideration obviously.

Derrick Ward is ok to go?

Ward was sore today again. We worked him yesterday and he was sore today. I expect he will be, but we didn’t work him today.

Do you feel like that is a position in flux right now?

I think it is better than that. I think it is better than that.

*****

You don’t sound real worried about running back, do you think Ward will be ok?

Yeah. We have had practice this week with (Reuben) Droughns and (Ahmad) Bradshaw and (Derrick) Ward and Brandon (Jacobs) has had snaps throughout the week and took pretty much everything today in a limited number of snaps. We just hope between now and game time it gets better. It should get better between now and game time.

The contingency plan is to have Droughns to play more halfback?

Well, he has done that. He did that. Really he has done that for a couple of weeks now. He has done more halfback with Hedgecock here.

At what point during that presser did they start using thumb screws on Coughlin to get him to answer questions.

Translation: he's not ready.

"At what point during that presser did they start using thumb screws on Coughlin to get him to answer questions."

I can just see his ratty little face reddening as he pointedly says nothing. Like every other Coughlin presser.

I thought I heard John Clayton say today that Ward probably won't be ready and that Droughns would carry the load Sunday. I usually take ESPN's reporting with a grain of salt.

yeah...me personally...having serious RB issues this weekend...i am taking a shot on droughns. i don't understand why he isn't being mentioned...i read that ward is still not practicing and i read that jacobs said he isn't going to go this weekend probably and to me, it sounds like droughns could be an ok play with those factors considered. but he is not being talked about. am i wrong?

Translation: Tommy is a Ward owner
It Jacobs was ready, then Coughlin would have given a more positive description than just "OK". And he wouldn't have listed Jacobs as questionable for Sunday.Ward is score because he went at full speed yesterday. Being sore is nothing. Everyone is sore after practice.

i heard that, too. but it wasn't definite/"official" i don't think. i just wish it wasn't the night game....

Just confirming that I heard this as well.Haven't heard that anywhere else.Saying that it was an ankle issue I believe and Ward's questionable.

I heard from someone that Clayton said on ESPN yesterday that Ward might sit and Droughns could start? Can anybody confirm if he really said that?

Did you try reading the posts in this thread? Just an idea, as bizarre as it sounds.
As bizarre as it sounds nobody in this thread actually seems to have heard what Clayton said. As bizarre as it sounds I'm trying to find out if Clayton actually said what several people, myself included, have been told second hand. I realize it's a bit bizarre to seek clarity but that's just the kind of guy I am.

According to WFAN yesterday afternoon Ward will play and Jacobs will not. That was from a reporter and it sounded like he had a source inside the organization. He didn't say anything about Droughns.

Have not heard anything new yet this AM.

do you remember which reporter? i have to make a decison by 10:30 before i leave. i've got it on now, but haven't heard anything on any giants rb yet.eta: okay,i',m leaving -- with julius jones in my lineup instead of a giants rb. :rolleyes:just wanted to mention that i've been listening to both ny sports stations and whenever they mention giants on the updates they only mention burress (it doesn't help that baseball is minimizing football airtime today.) so, fwiw, it doesn;t look good for having info before 1pm game starts. coulod end up a mix of all three backs. (jmo) :deadhorse:

Found this dated today at 4am. . .

"Now, like a struggling actor who has finally gotten his first big break, Ward, at 27, is finally launching his career. Tonight against the Eagles, the 5-11, 228-pound back is expected to make his third consecutive start in place of the injured Brandon Jacobs, despite not practicing on Friday and being listed as questionable with a sore ankle. While Ward was supposed to keep the backfield warm until the bruising Jacobs healed, the obscure back has rushed for more yards than superstars LaDainian Tomlinson, Steven Jackson and Larry Johnson - the consensus top three running backs in the NFL. He ranks eighth in the league in rushing with 273 yards and has 14 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown."

Here is a link to the whole article. . .

For what it is worth:

ESPN's John Clayton just stated again that Droughns will be starting. He said this yesterday too but he is the only one reporting it.

I heard that too. He rattled it off so fast and my daughter was talking I couldn't hear it all. I thought he said Jacobs and Ward were likely out. Did anyone hear this and can confirm? I'm not sure so don't make a decision off of me. I have Ward in one league and want to know what is going on.

Someone just posted that Mort said Jacobs is playing. What a mess.......

He did not say Droughns was starting. He said he would start if Ward is out.

DISCLAIMER: this is what CBS has on their player news, and we know they are not always accurate... and they are parroting what ESPN is saying anyways.

News: According to ESPN, Giants RBs Derrick Ward (knee, questionable) and Brandon Jacobs (knee questionable) will both be out for Week 4 vs. Philadelphia. Rueben Droughns is expected to start in their place.Analysis: Start making lineup changes accordingly. Jacobs will likely be ready to go for Week 5 vs. the Jets, but Ward's Fantasy usefulness is about to take a big hit. He likely won't be the main running back again while Jacobs is healthy. He has, however, carved out enough of a niche for himself while Jacobs has been out to be used more than lightly the rest of the way. It looks like you'll have to reserve both Jacobs and Ward. Droughns can be used as a bye-week or replacement. He'll have absolutely no competition for all the carries now.

Does someone have ESPN on their Tivo and can back it up and listen again?

I have Tivo and just listened to Clayton's report again. He said Jacobs is likely out and "Ward has an ankle injury, so it very well could be Rueben Droughns". There was no direct or official info on who would start.

According to CBS and Espn both are out and drougns should get all the carries, since the other backs are ruled out for this game, if this is true I will start him along side FWP instead of caddy.

Rotoworld about an hour ago:

Newsday reiterates that Brandon Jacobs (knee) is highly unlikely to play Sunday night against the Eagles.Jacobs should be very close to 100 percent for Week 5, but it will be a big surprise if he's active tonight. Derrick Ward (ankle) is expected to start and can be penciled into fantasy lineups as a flex.
(The second & third sentances are RW's take)

KFFL said this Friday afternoon:

New York Giants RB Derrick Ward (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 28. Ward missed practice because his ankle was sore, but he should be able to play Week 4. Ward is officially listed as questionable for the game.

I have another hour to decide, but in summary, it seems like we have the following at this point:2 sources saying Ward will likely play (RotoWorld and KFFL).1 source saying he might not play - and if he doesn't play, Droughns would start. If I had to choose right now (and didn't have more obvious options) I'd start Ward. (I am) - Just MHO

ughhh i can't believe this is a night game. hopefully it gives ward the extra couple of hours to get ready. droughns is rostered and i might have to go with norwood vs houston

:goodposting: I have both Ward and Jacobs, plus Fred Taylor, Rudi Johnson, and I just picked up Kenny Watson since Rudi's out. Does Ward have any value beyond this week since it seems Jacobs will be back after week 5? Do I drop Ward and try to pick up somebody else (I think Gado is still out there?) or do I just take the big fat zero? I know Dayne is going to be the starting RB but isn't he a bit banged up?
