Steelers' Tomlin named coach of the year

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Mike Tomlin, who has led the Steelers to Sunday's Super Bowl, today was named coach of the year.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

This is regular season only, right? Seems to me Fisher did better with less. May have even gone with Sparano or Harbaugh, but Tomlin is one of the best head coaches in sports.

He seems like a good guy that players like and can relate to, but he made some HORRIBLE decisions that really could have hurt his team. After I wrote the following, others chimed in as well.

"I know Pitt won so nobody says anything, but this was absurd and I think Tomlin being a (young) coach really screwed this up. With about 1:08 to go in the game, Pitt completes a 10 yard gain (right after a timeout) for 1st and goal from the 4 yard line with your team down by 3 points...Inexplicably Ben gets up to the line and spikes the ball. I am saying that Baltimore should be using their timeouts and Pitt helps them by stopping the clock AND even more absurd wasting a down. I couldn't believe how bad of a decision this was, absolutely crazy. Now Baltimore has time to try and come back and now Pitt only has 2 downs to get in the end zone instead of 3. The first pass in incomplete and now they are down to their final down. Fortunately after a broken play they get a TD (although that is still questionable)...but what if they were at the 2 inch yard line or what if they were at the 1 or even the 4?

Baltimore did have time to throw a hail Mary at the end as well.

Pitt should have taken their time and run whatever play they thought would work, but time was not even a factor for them (they even had a timeout left), but the downs surely are critical.

Nobody is talking about this because Pitt was lucky enough to win, but I believe this was one of the worst decisions I have seen in some time. They lessened their chances of scoring a TD and gave baltimore a chance to come back...could not be worse. "

Just think if they woudl have lost what it would have meant. Decisions like the above should NEVER happen

I agree that Tomlin has made some questionable decisions in his short coaching career and a lot of that has to do with his aggressive nature. He's simply a guy who plays to win and sometimes it backfires. I personally prefer a guy who plays to win as opposed to someone who plays not to lose. I think Tomlin has a ways to go as an Xs and Os guy but he's already a seasoned veteran at motivating and keeping his players focused. this is one of the first Steelers teams I've seen that have that all business mentality. They're extremely focused and most of that is due to Tomlin. I admit that I was furious with Tomlin and his play calling in last year's loss to the Jags but I think he's done a pretty good job this year. Regarding the example that you cited, I agree that it was a boneheaded play but is it possible that it was completely Ben's fault? Perhaps he just panicked or had a brain fart? Ben's explanation after the game was that he just wanted to calm the team down at that point. Not saying Tomlin should be exonerated for that play (since he is the coach) but he may not have had anything to do with it. That happened in the heat of the moment.

I've always felt the opposite. He seems very timid (I understand his D is great, but that doesn't mean he should be so conservative) and he seems to mishandle a lot of the "when to go for it on 4th down, when to go for 2" type decisions.

At least in this year's playoffs, I feel like he's been pretty aggressive. Maybe I'm talking more about his decision making than his playcalling. I agree his playcalling has been conservative but I think thats smart given the defense (as you alluded to). However, he has gone for it on a couple of 4th and shorts and attempted that ridiculously stupid fake punt. I also think he was acting aggressively in going for another play before halftime against the Ravens.
