Ministry of Pain

Mike Chappell, of The Indianapolis Star, reports Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy was satisfied with the way RB Dominic Rhodes and RB Joseph Addai played Thursday, Aug. 10. Dungy said, " The thing people say (is), 'Well, they didn't get the chance to run.' We know these guys can run and they're going to make yards running the ball. (But) it was really a good game for us to see Dominic and Joseph running pass routes, picking up (blitzes). They did a lot of blitz protect ion, pick-ups that they had to do. We got to see a lot of things we needed to see. All of the guys did well."

MOP: I think it speaks volumes about their confidence in the run this season. IMO Manning is going to throw more, and a return to 40+ TDs seems likely. You have the weapons in the passing game...these guys are being instructed to pick up the blitz and run pass routes accurately. I understand that is part of the Colts playbook but it also seems like they expect to be putting the ball in the air a ton. Even Stokley might be undervalued. Is Reggie Wayne a bargain now in the middle of the 3rd round?

IMO, if it is a 12 team league, yes. 10 team league, not so much.

So let me get this straight...The coach says he's confident with his RBs running ability so they were working on other areas like pass routes and blitz pickups - things that are usually the most questionable in young or less experienced backs - and from that you get that the #2 and #3 WRs should be upgraded? Maybe the other way to take this is that these RBs really need work in the areas that directly affect the passing game like blitz pick up and pass routes and the coaching staff may not have confidence in their ability to fill those roles so they will not pass as much. Or maybe they may just suck at those roles and Manning is going to get his head knocked off before the leaves start to fall. There's been plenty of speculation that Indy might pass more this year without James, but to imply that a quote like that gives any reason to significantly strengthen that belief is just silly.

Agreed. Rudi has negative yards in his first preseason game, and I doubt that means that the Bengels will rely on pass this year. Dungy is going to slowly nurture these two along and gradually give the one that performs more carries. At this point, he's pleased that they have the 'non-rushing' fundamentals down, so that the best runner will have no other obstacles to getting playing time. As a Rhodes/Addai owner, this is very good news about how well they will rely on the run.And it's not fair to assert that the Colts will rely on the pass that much more than they have. Like any team, they still need a rushing game to keep the defenses honest, and will dish out the standard 20-30 carries per week... on top of screen and swing passes to the RBs.

Because a lot of the people who are less informed than ourselves believe that the loss of Edge means a jump in stats for Manning, IMO every bit of the IND passing/receiving game is overvalued.Don't fall into the trap. This isn't a team that needs to pass to win anymore. They have balance. While you're incredibly likely to see him eclipse the 30 TD mark, to expect 40 is silly. The colts have a defense, and their running game is as solid as ever.
