I get home a few hours ago after tough day and decide to lie down for a minute. I lie sideways on the bed and after a few seconds realize I need to take a leak. I sit up and kind of bounce on my butt to the edge of the bed and as I go to stand up my right foot gets caught on the comforter or maybe the bed frame (tbh I'm not exactly sure what happened). My left foot hit the ground but the momentum I had made me lose my balance and my ankle rolled. I went down pretty hard and my left leg/foot got pinned on the side of me, maybe a little bit behind me for a second and all of my toes hyper-extended. I fell with my butt right near the base of the wall so I couldn't just fall backwards. The back of my head actually bonked against the wall. Anyway, my leg and ankle twisted funny but I was able to get it out from under me. My immediate thought was I probably just broke my foot or my ankle but after sitting on the ground for a bit nothing felt too bad. I gave everything a look and I think I either sprained my first three toes or broke one or some of them. No crazy bruising but it didn't happen that long ago. I think I may have sprained my foot, ankle and knee as well but nothing is hurting that much except the toes. I can limp on my left foot but the toes are sore.

Insurance is great so not worried about cost or anything but the urgent care in town takes forever. What would you do? Just go and wait? Or tough it out? Maybe see how it feels tomorrow? Talk about a fluky thing. If I got the fall on camera it would probably go viral on youtube.

Having sprained both my ankles twice, it's been pretty clear to me when urgent care is needed. If it's ambiguous, you're probably ok. But I'm not a doctor.

I'm worried about your head hitting the wall.

Your toes? Come on, now. If anything besides a toe is broken, you'll know it. (Edit: As a former runner, if you can't put weight on it the next morning, you should have it looked at.)

If you are of a certain age (like most of us), the head injury may be the real problem. If you are fortunate enough to have good insurance, I'd probably go for the sake of mind. If nothing else they will probably give you some better anti-inflammatories than you could get OTC.

The back of my head thumped the wall but I'm confident it's fine. I guess I'm most concerned about the big toe. It does have a faint bruise that looks like a hollow tiny oval shape toward the inside of the toe and is sore to the touch.

Honestly I wouldn't call it a head injury. It just thumped the wall right when my butt hit the ground. It was more startling than anything.

Pain scores:

Big toe: 6 out of 10
2nd toe : 9 out of 10 (mostly at the tip)
3rd toe: 2 out of 10
Top of foot near the ankle: 3.5 out of 10
Ankle when walking: 2.5 out of 10
Knee when walking: 1.5 out of 10
Head: 0 out of 10 but neck a little sore maybe from existing injury
Lower back on left side: 2.5 out of 10

You know when a bone is broken.

Good bad news about toes and fingers. Unless they’re mangled, Put em in a splint from the grocery store and tape it. Cause that’s all they can do for you.

First time I broke a finger, I had it all taped up and neat. Mom’s takes me to the ER and they take off the bandage :hot: and shoot it up with a needle before re-taping it and putting it in the same style splint I wore in.

Around here I think urgent care only exists to charge you an additional copay to then go get X-rays (bill from hospital)) to then be read by radiology (additional bill) and then follow up with you primary doc (copay).

So, you are 3 copays minimum from finding out you should ice it and stay off it.

I expect that many of those numbers will be higher over the next couple of days.

But for now, I agree with the ice and some NSAIDs.

I agree. Already rising. The whole foot is pretty sore now.

I just checked the medicine cabinet and all I have on the pain reliever front is some Advil that expired in 2020. I do have some unexpired Colace though. Will that help?

9 out of 10 pain is near delirium, screaming, agonizing pain. Not post on a fantasy football forum pain.

If you cannot bear weight, that’s reason to get it checked out. Doesn’t have to be emergent though. I’d go to an urgent care with x-rays, a couple hours after they open. You can buddy tape the injured toes in the interim, ace wrap the foot/ankle, keep the foot elevated, and take your expired NSAIDs at the recommended dose/interval.

As far as the head injury goes, unless you’re on a blood thinner, lost consciousness or have an unrelenting headache, it’s likely a non-issue.

Yeah this is probably good advice

Real advice and no shtick? That's not why we're here.

careful with the oxycodone / percocet they'll be giving you

you will ignore the poll and go to urgent care in the morning, right?
Does the local urgent care do x-rays? If not, I'm not sure it's worth it.

When I needed non-hospital care, I went to the 24-hour emergency room. It was fantastic. At 2AM, I was the only patient. No wait times at all. Lovely people. Real doctor. Real drugs.

I would unquestionably go to the VA ER and receive fantastic service.

My advice was just echoing terminalopinions upthread, he's our resident X spurt on all things medical.

Urgent care will not give you either of those…. Speaking from experience. ;)

So....not a medical professional

UC are more variable in the services they provide, but he should be able to determine if they can do x-rays before going. Highly recommend wee hours of the night for ER visits, or mid-morning as a second choice.

They may not want to prescribe controlled substances, but can in most states, sometimes with the blessing of a physician.

And they can do all the films. Yeah, the co-pay is high but you have an answer normally in one visit.
