Week 10:

Here's my attempt at applying college methodology to the NFL as of this week. College seems to really like win streaks. Lose one game and you can drop like a rock.

#1 Colts - 9-0 - easy enough with their huge win over the Patriots

#2 Saints - 9-0 - Big wins against @Eagles, Giants, @Dolphins, Falcons

#3 Bengals - 7-2 - Two wins over the defending champions, two wins over Ravens as well.

#4 Vikings - 8-1 - Nice record. Only quality win was over the Ravens. Only other decent opponent was the Steelers and they lost.

#5 Chargers - 6-3 - Lot of teams tied with 6 wins. Chargers have the biggest current win steak of all of them at 4.

#6 Cardinals - 6-3 - In the college system, they'd probably punish the Patriots for their loss and drop them down around #8-#10, even if everyone "knows" they are better than that. Cardinals have won two in a row.

#7 Steelers - 6-3 - Defending champs probably fell quite a bit with a loss last week

#8 Patriots - 6-3 - Also probably fell quite a bit

#9 Cowboys - 6-3 - Also probably moved down a few pegs from their loss to the Packers

#10 Packers - 5-4 - I could see the college system ranking the Packers just below the Cowboys even though the Pack just beat them.

The Broncos (6-3) would not make it due to a 3 game losing streak.

does the fact that Denver beat 4 of these teams not count for something? I'm pretty sure college football accounts for strength of schedule somehow.

It's funny that the Packers make the top-10 and yet you don't give the Vikings any credit for beating them twice. You say " Only quality win was over the Ravens" even though the Ravens aren't in your top-10. The Vikings also are on a longer winning streak than the Bengals.

Actually it's funny that the Pack are in the top-10 at all. They have a far worse loss (Bucs) than most of the other 5-4 teams. Those bad losses are killers in the college rankings.

Being ranked #10 doesn't really mean much because its out of 32 teams. In college there's something like 130 teams, so its comparable to being ranked about #45 in college. The college top 25 is about one-fifth of the landscape. A proper translation to the NFL game would be one-fifth of 32 teams which is roughly 6 teams. I just thought that was not as interesting of a discussion.

You should forward this thread to whoever is currently the head of the BCS to show them how utterly ridiculous their system is.

1st point -- If the NFL used BCS ranking the Patriots would still be #3.2nd point -- No, here would be the top 10:1 -- Colts2 -- Saints3-32 -- doesn't matter, you don't get to participate.

I think college ranking formula takes SOS into account more heavily than you are giving credit for...

Teams are much more evenly balanced in the NFL though. The talent gap between the Colts and the Browns is there but nowhere as big as a major program and some of the smaller schools. In effect, all schedules are strong in the NFL.

Just curious why the Saints wouldn't have leapfrogged Indy after their big win against the Patriots. Especially when it was noted in the OP under Indy that it was a big portion of their ranking.

#7 Cowboys (LW: --) 9-5: Beat undefeated Saints

If they both stayed undefeated, then the BCS bowl would be easily Saints vs Colts. So it wouldn't really matter how they are ranked.

Week 16:

#1 Chargers (LW:2) 12-3: 10 game win streak

#2 Colts (LW:1) 14-1: Lost to Jets

#3 Eagles (LW:4) 11-4: 6 game win streak

#4 Saints (LW:3) 13-2

#5 Patriots (LW:6) 10-5: 3 game win streak

#6 Cowboys (LW:7) 10-5

#7 Cardinals (LW:--) 10-5

#8 Vikings (LW:5) 11-4

#9 Packers (LW:9) 10-5

#10 Bengals (LW:10) 10-5

Out of top 10: Ravens

I think you are failing to account for big market vs small market teams and teams that travel well vs teams that don't.

New England and Philly should be 1 and 2 with Dallas right behidn
