Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (1 Viewer)

Good thing the laughing emoji is back, but you won't need it for this selection.

59:  TASTE OF CHERRY

The imdb summary will probably chase most away -

An Iranian man drives his truck in search of someone who will quietly bury him under a cherry tree after he commits suicide.

I thought this was a gorgeous movie though.   I might need to batsignal @krista4 for backup on this one and another of mine coming up.

Alright, @otb_lifer - this one is for you.     It takes a cold soul to hate on The Muppets, is your heart black enough to not be moved by....

#57:  THE IRON GIANT

?  I sang the praises of the animated movies of the 90s.   This movie is a main reason why.  This is the #28 movie on my list.    It's on HBO Max if people haven't seen it.

These are both brilliant, and I might even put The Iron Giant higher on my personal list than you did.  You needn't justify your personal tastes to the hoi polloi.  :boxing:

I'm also a huge fan of the "Before" series, though not sure if that would have been able to crack my top 100.

I will fully admit that #1 is the weakest, and I might be giving a bit too much of a "full trilogy" bonus, but I still love the hell out of the movie, so WTF.

Knew I could count on you for my other picks though!    :gang1:

It would be interesting if we did the 80s.   That would be a movie list that would be all over the place with types of movies I love.

DO IT.

that was perhaps the most incoherently unhinged decade of filmmaking ... i still dunno wtf was going on.

EVERYBODY GETS A GENRE!

WHEEEE!

A big part of my hesitation would be knowing I am going to encounter what I did with the 90s - a ton of movies that don't hold up.   Plus, it's probably no secret what my #1 is.    Hell, it's probably not a mystery what my #1 90s movie is either.

well, i hope you two give it consideration after this one wraps ... lotta fun thus far ✌️

now on with the countdown -

56- Happy Together

Maybe sawdust category? I certainly don't think so. Maybe in the Sunrise camp. The general synopsis is: A couple take a trip to Argentina in search of a new beginning, but instead find themselves drifting ever further apart. It's directed by Wong Kar Wai though so it's very kinetic, even when not much is happening. He's one of the Hong Kong directors famed for perfecting a music video style of movie making.

With the ages of the masses in here, I do wonder if the 80s countdown would be even more contentious.   I was young in the 80s, so what I liked growing up was probably kid crap for others around here as they were in HS+ watching other stuff.

Another from your list I didn't get around to.   I seemed to watch different foreign movies for this and didn't get around to my WKW marathon.

I didn't even see that, I would for sure be in. My 80s list might be kind of weird though.
It was buried in one of our PM exchanges.

I'd be down, but would probably need another couple months to watch way too many 80s movies.

(or just get stoned and watch The Lost Boys over and over.) ;)

Yeah we definitely would need some time.

LOVED the title track

gonna slap this in the que, behind the church of latter day Sofia offerings.

hope to add more.

Finally we get to another one that we agreed on today!!!

#55:  PHILADELPHIA

My #32 and 80s' #92.   I hadn't seen it in a while and had forgotten just how much it affects me.

thar's quite the disparity here - i lean more towards 80s placement.

I place a high emphasis on rewatchable movies, and ones that upon rewatching still manage to elicit strong emotions from me.

For me this ties perfectly into the Usual Suspects banter yesterday.   Like I said, that is still a great movie, but on a rewatch I am not tense, emotional, etc..  I do laugh at a few things like the police lineup scene, but for the most part, while a great movie, it's just "on".   Philadelphia gut punched me again, and had me bawling.   That's what the great movies do for me - still make me cry, laugh my ### off, or make me jump after all these years.

To piggyback on that post above, I'd guess that's why I typically don't tend to love action movies and comedy movies.   I find a lot of action movies fun and enjoyable, but after rewatches they are mostly just on for 2 hours.  Similar with a lot of comedy movies - I've gotten my laughs but after rewatches I might only laugh a few times.   On top of that, those also don't tend to have high director acclaim, acting, or complicated storylines that I can mine for rewatchable goodness.

 #54- Beau Travail

Very loose adaptation of Melville’s Billy Budd- A French foreign legion officer’s perfectly disciplined life is slowly ripped apart by the arrival of a new recruit. Set on the beach and desert, there is so much sand in this movie that one might squint and see sawdust.

We will pause for a bit as a chase around for the big kid and get the smaller one to bed.   I will post 53-51 in a couple hours.

  • 63 -  A FEW GOOD MEN - I haven't put together a top 10 list, but this is one of the ones I would assume would be in serious contention for my list.  Really love this movie and surprised to see it this low.
  • 62 -  THE VIRGIN SUICIDES - Never saw
  • 61 -  CLUELESS - Liked it
  • 60 -  DANCES WITH WOLVES - Hated it, slow pace, not once did he dance with a real wolf, false advertising ;)
  • 59 -  TASTE OF CHERRY - Never saw
  • 58 -  BEFORE SUNRISE - Never saw
  • 57 -  THE IRON GIANT - Really love this movie, will bring me close to tears
  • 56 -  HAPPY TOGETHER - Never saw
  • 55 -  PHILADELPHIA - Really well done

This makes a lot of sense, to each their own. I am not a big movie re-watcher so I tend to put my emphasis on the initial watch, or if I watch something again with my kids (2 movies we did this semi recently with was Princess Bride - all time classic, and surprisingly Hitch. My enjoyment with the movie that I think was largely just above average was greatly enhanced watching my 2 sons laugh their heads off).

To take it back further, I was blown away watching Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and the Matrix. The special effects for the first 2 are now nothing compared to current technology, but I remember my initial feel watching them and it transports me back.

Thanks to both of you for putting the lists together!  It's fun to think about movies and get some "new" ideas on gems we may have missed.

Glancing at that top 100 of the 00s, there might be some reshuffling of the order, but I am pretty content with how that list looks, especially the top 30 or so.

We are inching closer to some movies from my top 20.   The next two that are just mine were the 2 biggest surprises and jumps of my 90s movie marathon the last couple months.    It's possible they climb farther after more viewings.  As it was I couldn't get them into the top 20.

I was comparing our lists, and I had a little less crossover in the top 25 than 80s did.   8 of my top 25 were not on his list, and 5 of his were not on mine.

63 -  A FEW GOOD MEN - way too low

62 -  THE VIRGIN SUICIDES - seems about right

61 -  CLUELESS - seems about right

60 -  DANCES WITH WOLVES - seems about right

59 -  TASTE OF CHERRY - Never saw

58 -  BEFORE SUNRISE - Meh, this trilogy is too much estrogen for my taste

57 -  THE IRON GIANT - seems about right, maybe a tad lower on my list

56 -  HAPPY TOGETHER - Never saw

55 -  PHILADELPHIA - Seems about right, Denzel and peak Hanks...I typically ding sad movies because I don't enjoy them as much as others seem to but the acting and dialogue are too strong to rank it lower.

#53:  DARK CITY

My #22 movie.   I sang it's praises in the regular movie thread.   I hadn't seen it since it came out, and I was floored by how great it looked still, and what a wonderfully weird movie it is.    This one is on Kanopy for anybody who has access to that.

There is a lot of good discussion of the movie earlier in the thread. I do really like it but Moore-Cruise are kind of lacking for me.
I think Demi was "moore" of the hangup for me.   I think Cruise does well with the smarmy, I'm going to smile and get my way shtick that this character oozes.

Sofia seems vastly overrated to me. I haven't seen the Virgin Suicides, so I can't comment there.

But Lost In Translation was pretty lame. An interesting set up that went nowhere and just got silly.

The Beguiled was just flat out bad.

I loved "lost in translation" and is my favorite film of hers.

Beguiled was meh for me too

Virgin Suicides was different as are many of Coppola's films which is why I enjoy her stuff...but yeah, there was a stretch there where she was a critic's darling and it felt a tad overrated.

I think it's nearly a perfect movie.   Perhaps the dialogue lacks some sophistication at times, but the casting, acting and plot were terrific.

I have it in the 10-20 range for the decade.

Gave us something different, but not one I've really wanted to watch again which is a factor that would lower it in my rankings.

By comparison I've probably seen "A Few Good Men" at least 15 times.

I thought Cruise nailed it.  Demi was okay for me to be honest.  Jack nailed it in a part that was tailor made for him.  Pollack, Bacon, Sutherland...all nailed it.

One of the best castings of the decade for me.

I think I'm getting a feel for Karma and 80s tastes.

80s is more in line with general audience (than karma) but has a lean for foreign films.

Karma prefers movies that hinge on emotion, sophistication and perhaps are stylistically unique.

I hear you, but sometimes like this one these are my favorite experiences.     Like with my comment with Usual Suspects - I've seen A Few Good Men, thought it really held up, but it's still exactly what I know it's going to be.  Not much new, no surprises, etc..   These are the are the splitting hairs thing I am talking about when I was attempting to parse out rankings between dozens of movies I would rate as an 8/10.

Yeah, movies like "the Sixth Sense" and "Usual Suspects" have a big reveal and it's great the first time, but not great for rewatchability for me.  Everybody is going to value those factors differently.

A move like "A few good men" I'll watch mutliple times and for my personal rankings. I tend to favor rewatchability vs. the "big reveal" type movies.

Honestly, some of my favorite movies now are ones that I did not click with on first viewing.   I think 2 in the top 10 of the countdown qualify for this, as would There Will Be Blood.   I would have missed out a lot IMO if I had written them off and not tried watching again under different circumstances.

I am blurring lists, so I looked again.   I had Sixth Sense 45, A Few Good Men 47, and Suspects 96.    Like you posted above, rewatchabilty factors in, and Sixth Sense makes me "feel" slightly more than Few Good Men does, even if I would admit that I would probably turn on AFGM more often.   Again, splitting hairs.

That is probably  accurate. I hadn't really thought of that but it seems right.
