Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (3 Viewers)

76/77:

SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, & UNCUT

AS GOOD AS IT GETS  [Netflix]

Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!
Actually, what I said was,
* Pulls out megaphone*
"HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO forget it, MR GARRISON?!?!"

:lmao:   This movie still cracks me up.  These were our #48 movies.

75:  THE ENGLISH PATIENT

Another not on my list.   I still haven't seen it - wife wanted to watch it because she loved it and I fell asleep about an hour in.   Still gives me #### about it, and been waiting to watch it with her.

there have been a few like this where I love one (South Park) and am decidedly meh or bleh on the other. Makes it hard to emoji-rate these.

the ####### worst.

80s... really? REALLY?!

Count me among the Dazed and Confused fans. I think it's damn near pitch perfect.

The beginning with the teacher and the "landholding slave owners..." from a '70s fruit cup was just one the many flourishes that make it pop off the screen and into real life. We all had people like that in our schools.

The Affleck character who gets way too into it reminds me of a particular high school hazer who became a small-town cop. Can't lie about that.

every teacher and student and scenario were pulled from every school in the US... he got it so spot on, including the casting and script.

welp, ol' KP ... gotta say, your omissions have bought ya alotta commission good faith on my end.

:hifive:

That movie got Jr HS and HS so well... and the era. and the archetypal characters, and the cast... and the music...
And just so quotable. Mrs. Scorchy knows I love Parker Posey* so she'll sometimes break out a "Wipe that face off your head, #####" when she's mildly annoyed at me.

* sad to know that Party Girl won't make the cut.

I don't want to work for the ACLU
I mean, I hate people
I WANNA DANCE!

Gets his ### kicked at the party. Oof.
I don't like people period. I mean you guys are okay. I don't know.

I'm just trying to be honest about being a misanthrope.

I love that line so hard... and use it all the time.

and this one

Dominant male monkey mother ####er

my gb who had parties at his house all the time- his dad was named Don.... and his parents were identical to Spackler's parents-- even how she called him Dawn. I pretty much lived that scene a few times.

same goes for their hangout with the foosball- same music, same people, same pre-teen me trying to sneak into the teen only place.

eta: lol... I knew Spackler was wrong- mixed up my movies... Pickford.

I never even got the South Park title was phallic in its concern. That hadn't occurred to mean until scorchy just mentioned the Saddam/Satan thing.

You're sitting around the pool all day, chasing the muff around

My favorite coach hated when guys had girlfriends. Drove him nuts. Dead heat, middle of summer. Curfew for summer baseball on. Calls me one random night. For whatever reason, I'm in. "Sure coach, I'm in."

Next day, I went three for three or something like that. Roped a double or something, scored on a hit, sat down on the bench.

Coach sort of surveys the crowd, notices my girlfriend is not in her usual spot in bleachers, goes

"What, [man], did you have a fight with your girlfriend last night?"

"Yes."

"Figures. Lose her. She might look good now, but you can't hit with her around."

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE

THE SIXTH SENSE

Such potential from M. Night.    This was the movie I wanted to talk about more with the Usual Suspects banter and with twist endings.   Like somebody else posted, I was fooled too.   A rare blend of genuine scares and emotional gut punches.

there's another twisty movie from the 90s, but not as successful as either of the ones listed so far... hopefully it makes it in there- solid film.

95:  SWINGERS  [HBO MAX]

Still a fun romp, and nothing else it deserves to be on the countdown solely for the NHLPA '93 scene.   The one-liners and charm of the movie more than coverup for the weak spots - mostly mopey Favreau and his answering machine.
In the last year, have been having movie night with the girlfriend to show her my favorite movies ever, that she has never seen because she was too young/not born at the time. This was one of the first ones, and while I enjoyed it and she liked it, it doesn't flow like you remember. Really really slow in parts, and the ending is kinda trash. Still would want it higher.

78:    DAZED AND CONFUSED   [PEACOCK]

I'm not sure what to say when it's not one of my movies.
I listen to a throw-away podcast on the way home from work called: Shat The Movies: 80s and 90s Best Film Review. Listened to their Dazed and Confused episode last week, and had me go home and dig out the DVD. Still a perfect movie to me, perfect cast (that would cost a fortune now) and just flows. Same meandering as Swingers, but done so much better. And they nailed the time period. My stepmom graduated in 1976 from a Texas high school and her yearbook could be a reference material for the writers. (She did say she didn't remember paddles, but all the hazing was spot on).

You guys know anything about a party here tonight?

I haven't seen Dazed and Confused or What About Bob either.

I've always meant you see the South Park movie but...nope on that too.

I guess comedies just aren't my bag. The jokes on hand or on topic just seem to fit better in the time allotted to a TV show.

71:  WHAT ABOUT BOB?

One that I had completely forgotten about while doing this.  Probably would have been a solid rewatch.
Oh yeah, baby steps. This movie actually annoyed me to no end. It's supposed to be funny. I found it to be an existential social horror flick.

D&C, Swingers- both coming of age ensemble films that do a great job getting the ages, places and era. Is that not your type of thing?

Dr. Marvin:  Gone?!?  He's never gone!!!!  [opens door to reveal Bob still standing on the porch]

Bob:  Is this some kind of radical new therapy?

Dr. Marvin:  See!!!!!

THE SIXTH SENSE
Top 5 for me for the decade.

Humor and horror often go together. But at the end of this (before the surprise), I am totally choked up in the scene between Cole and his mother.  You almost never get that with a horror film.

And it's also the best performance from a child actor that I have ever seen.

Oh, and the twist is kinda good, too.

I've re-watched several 90's movies with my kids and What About Bob? was one of their favorites.
I saw it in the theater and just didn't vibe with it at all. made worse by people guffawing at stuff I didn't find funny.

but I know a lot of people love this one- and I've never re-watched it. will try to give it a go- maybe with the kids, who are more prone to laughter than this misanthrope.

Not really. I've never seen Fast Times from the 80's either.
Do you usually find more humor in other movies vs. straight comedy?   Ie - you and I both seem to find American Beauty funny, and I know I might laugh at that more than some of the movies that would show up on a standard best comedies of the 90s list.

I loved the movie. I was just entertained. And yes, the scene with Cole and his mother was remarkable. As aren't the scenes with Cole and Willis, in retrospect. The almost terrifying fear the boy must feel. The cluelessness of Willis. Just a top-flight movie.
