Top 101 Movies of the 90s. We are done. If I knock out Amadeus/Brazil/Ran, We get to have an 80s countdown!! (2 Viewers)

Top 5 for me for the decade.

Humor and horror often go together. But at the end of this (before the surprise), I am totally choked up in the scene between Cole and his mother.  You almost never get that with a horror film.

And it's also the best performance from a child actor that I have ever seen.

Oh, and the twist is kinda good, too.
This was what i was talking about with the gut punches.   Also just the situation with the girl and her mom leaves me scared and drained at the same time.

I've re-watched several 90's movies with my kids and What About Bob? was one of their favorites.
The thing is that you have to like uncomfortable and awkward social cringe humor that really gets to the nub of existential dread, especially humor that wants to deconstruct social pretenses. This movie wonders what it is like if you basically destroy the hifalutin notions of the feeling and caring industry (listening while getting paid and drawing boundaries around that).

I, for one, being very cringeworthy in everything I do, do not care for that type of humor so much. Hits too close to home, I guess. It's like the people that loved David Cross's Todd Margaret vs. the people who just cringe at it, like me.

Cringey.

In a similar style but more extreme of the scare and emotion in a horror movie like Sixth Sense would be Hereditary.

Not really. I've never seen Fast Times from the 80's either.
I rewatched Fast Times in the last six months. Not sure it "holds up", but still a blast to watch. My favorite scene always changes, but most of the time it's Robert Romanus chewing up the scenery as Damone. You really gotta sit through one viewing just to see all of the cast.

In a super weird tie, these were each of our #69 and #71 movies.

69/70:

JFK

CANDYMAN

look into the mirror and say "Back... and to the left" 5 times...

I just love the atmosphere, locations and story of Candyman.   Holds up so well.   JFK is bonkers, but I will always get sucked into watching this anytime it's on.   What an amazing cast.

Such as?
Basketball Diaries

American Beauty

The Usual Suspects

now you include Dazed and Confused, Dumb and Dumber, and the Sixth Sense.

i can’t wait to see the top 25.

Hope the unveiling of the list slows down so that all the peanuts have a chance to discuss.

I am going to take a bigger break now.    Just wanted to get Eyes Wide Shut out there for the masses something to grumble about for a few hours.  ;)

I will say that I hope I am coming off as though I am ####ting on @Ilov80s picks that weren't on my list.  I just don't know what to say for a few of them.    That's another reason to slow down, so he can come in and comment on some of those selections.

Do you usually find more humor in other movies vs. straight comedy?   Ie - you and I both seem to find American Beauty funny, and I know I might laugh at that more than some of the movies that would show up on a standard best comedies of the 90s list.
Yes. It's hard to describe what I do/don't find funny. I guess I gravitate more toward irreverence and irony than outlandish behavior. But even that's not always true.

THE CRYING GAME
I've told this story around here before, but watched this one with my dad in the theatre when I was like 16 with neither of us knowing what was coming.  One of the most awkward moments of my life.
I've mentioned this before too.. but watched it with a gf at the time- we kept waiting for the shocking twist. the place was so clearly a bar and scene servicing the twist- places we'd been- that there wasn't any twist to be had for us.

I love "What About Bob" and "Todd Margaret" but definitely see where you are coming from.

there is somewhat of a similar balance to Ricky Gervais's stuff - that cringey feeling of the humor where you are feeling sorry for someone in the scene.

Gervais does that humor to a “t”. No doubt.

seen... where? John Hughes?
I was thinking more American Graffiti

the ####### worst.

80s... really? REALLY?!
Hell yeah, I loved The English Patient. I also have Bridges of Madison County on my list so maybe I’m a romantic. Sorry to the great Elaine Benes but I side with J Peterman. The English Patient is a sweeping old school Hollywood epic that has gone out of style but it’s still gorgeously filmed and quite emotional.

These were each of our #39 movies.

67/68:

EYES WIDE SHUT
I have a buddy that lives a bit of an alternative lifestyle.  Pre-pandemic, he called me with mock outrage and asked how it was possible that I never told him there was a swingers club in my town, as he had just been invited to go by a woman he had met online.  This club is behind a McDonalds and a Verizon store and across the street from an all-night diner.  The year prior, some dude got shot in the parking lot.  Told him if he was visualizing an "Eyes Wide Shut" kind of scene that he was likely to be wildly disappointed.  Man I hated that movie.

No offense taken at all.  There’s some of your movies that I haven’t seen or obviously saw but didn’t include.

Not sure what's wrong with me but I just can't watch the cringey stuff.   I've never been able to sit through Borat despite everyone telling me how great it is.  My son loves Impractical Jokers and I can't be in the same room when it's on.  It took me years to get around to loving Curb Your Enthusiasm after one particular early season episode.

I HATE Impractical Jokers for this very reason. Good call.

just a bunch of meaness from guys that act and look like they all need a righteous beat down.

Dumb and Dumber at #74 is about right, I think. Jim Carrey had a huge decade, but this was honestly one of the more forgettable ones for me. Still good, but there are better Carrey movies.

95:  SWINGERS  [HBO MAX]

Still a fun romp, and nothing else it deserves to be on the countdown solely for the NHLPA '93 scene.   The one-liners and charm of the movie more than coverup for the weak spots - mostly mopey Favreau and his answering machine.
so underrated here, but glad to see it made the cut.

I appreciate Curb but can’t really watch it. It does what it does TOO well and I would heave if I had to be around people like the Larry David character IRL.

But I loved the British version of The Office. So who knows exactly where my line is on cringe humor.

I saw What About Bob in the theater and found it kind of amusing, but never felt the desire to see it again.

Please tell me there is no Neil LaBute on this list. I have few strong opinions about movies, but one is that Neil LaBute should not be allowed anywhere near a camera.

other things to knock IJ for, but "meanness"?  ferchrissakes, they are all #####cats, especially Sal.

you got these cats figured wrong, it's more painful for them than their foils.

both of these over casino and Apollo 13?

I had Casino and  As Good As It Gets 3 spots apart. Very close and I’ve watched both in the last 2 years. I would have had Casino much further back if I hadn’t done those rewatches. It moved up while As Good As It Gets dropped.

Anybody listen to "The Rewatchables" podcast?  Bill Simmons talks about some of the most rewatchable movies of all time.  Several of these were covered and Casino was one of them.

The crux of the Casino episode is that it was better for many upon rewatching.

To me Casino gets #### on because it is always compared to Goodfellas, but had Goodfellas never happened, Casino would get much more love in the rankings world.

I loved the movie and is easily top 25 of the decade for me, but I love most Scorsese and all things Vegas.
