Top 15 Picks (1 Viewer)

Colin Cowherd, host of "The Herd" On ESPN Radio, gave his Top 15 for the NFL Draft.

Take it for what it's worth:

1. Houston Texans

Reggie Bush, RB, USC

Comment: Texans will go 7-9 this year.

2. New Orleans Saints

Mario Williams, DE, North Carolina

Comment: They have Brees, he likes their offensive personnel, needs to bone up the defense.

3. Tennessee Titans

Matt Leinart, QB, USC

Comment: Leinart will be reunited with his old OC Norm Chow.

4. New York Jets

D'Brickashaw Ferguson, T, Virginia

5. Green Bay Packers

A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio State

Comment: They are hyping Vy Young (and anyone else) to distract people away from getting Hawk, whom the covet.

6. San Francisco 49ers

Haloti Ngata, DT, Oregon

7. Oakland Raiders

Michael Huff, S, Texas

Comment: They could go QB, but after getting Brooks and with Walters and Tui in camp, they have other needs to also address. Story of the first round - Young is NOT the first Longhorn drafted.

8. Buffalo Bills

Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland

9. Detroit Lions

Jimmy Williams, DB, Virginia Tech

Comment: Detroit will (finally) go defense in the first round and desperately need a shutdown corner.

10. Arizona Cardinals

Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt

Comment: This is the team that is the key to the Top 15. HC Denny Green needs to win NOW, but they like Cutler. Don't ask me - his picks not mine.

11. St. Louis Rams

Ernie Sims, LB, Flordia State

12. Cleveland Browns

Chad Jackson, WR, Florida

Comment: Shooting up the charts with his impressive workouts.

13. Baltimore Ravens

Vince Young, QB, Texas

Comment: Again - story of the first round - Young is NOT the first Longhorn drafted. Herd bigtime down on VY - snaps out of the shotgun, Wonderlic, "does better when not coached", etc....

14. Philadelphia Eagles

LenDale White, RB, USC

Comment: McNabb just needs some help in the backfield.

15. Denver Broncos

Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State

I know he's a great player, but taking Williams makes no sense for the Saints. With huge needs at LT and LB, and with great ones at both positions, why draft at the deepest position on the team? The draft is the wrong time to say "no way," but Williams shouldn't be a Saint.

they have more pressign needs than adding another DE to the mix. grant and smith combined for 11 sacks, 120 tackles despite Howard splitting time with them. they do not need a DE, even one as good as williams, when they have pressing needs elsewhere. They need to upgrade LB, O-line (C, LT, LG specifically) and CB in that order. i cannot imagine them overpaying for Hawk at 1.2, so D'Brick becomes the default pick because he's not a reach at that position and addresses a clear need.

this is contingent on trades not being considered and accepted.

I'm assuming you mean the Saints here....

:X if that's the way the draft goes. I would not be happy at all if the Bills ended up with Vernon Davis. I'd rather see the Bills reach somewhat for Winston Justice than take Vernon Davis. I know Davis has tremendous physical abilities, but the Bills absolutely have to have a long term impact guy on that offensive line.

It goes haywire about pick #6.

6. San Francisco 49ers

Haloti Ngata, DT, Oregon

If he's available, and the 9ers don't take Vernon Davis, they ought to shut the place down

8. Buffalo Bills

Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland

See earlier comment.

9. Detroit Lions

Jimmy Williams, DB, Virginia Tech

Comment: Detroit will (finally) go defense in the first round and desperately need a shutdown corner.

Williams is falling and most definitely will not go this high.

12. Cleveland Browns

Chad Jackson, WR, Florida

Comment: Shooting up the charts with his impressive workouts.

Not after taking Edwards last year, Winslow returning, and signing Jerevicius - Defense, defense, defense

13. Baltimore Ravens

Vince Young, QB, Texas

He'll be gone long before this.

14. Philadelphia Eagles

LenDale White, RB, USC

Comment: McNabb just needs some help in the backfield.

That's just crazy talk.

Cowherd must just be trying to grab attention by being different.

 Everything I've read thus far indicates Browns are going 'D' with this pick.

With as bad as their linebacking corps is, I can see it. They're more likely to go d-line with Pickett leaving, though.

I would be SHOCKED if the Eagles took LenDale White. They have more pressing needs, even though he would be helpful.
That's what I was thinking. Maybe a late 1st day or early second day guy to compliment Westbrook, but I can't see the iggles going RB in the first round....If anything why wouldn't they take the WR that Denver grabs behind them. Philly needs WR's just as badly or worse than Denver....

I agree with all your comments above. San Francisco needs someone to catch the ball, and a big target open behind the LBs in V. Davis would become Alex Smith's new best friend. However, Detroit has to go Defense so a DB isn't out of the question. The question may be Jimmy Williams going that high.

Philly - I'd love to see White there and the Eagles take him. I doubt it will happen, though, and expect DT or O-line.

2. New Orleans SaintsMario Williams, DE, North CarolinaComment: They have Brees, he likes their offensive personnel, needs to bone up the defense.
Have any of the ESPN people predicting this made any effort to explain why NO would do this with both Will Smith and Charles Grant in the fold?

OMG no way do they go WR. No chance. None.Ok, slight chance (never say never) - but I put this as an extreme longshot.

Philly has gone WR in the 1st or 2nd round in three of the six Andy Reid drafts. Pinkston at 36 in 2000, Freddie Mitchell :X at 25 in 2001, and now Reggie Brown at 35 last year. Add in Billy McMullen at 95 in 2003 (Rd 3) and that's 4 young WRs attempted to become the go to guy in Philly for years.

They have a youth problem (no veteran WR leadership) and the last thing they need are more rookie WRs. Hopefully Brown is the #1 and other positions show leadership.

So you say that there is no chance that the Eagles will take a WR because Reid does it in 50% of his drafts? That seems counterintuitive. Just because something hasn't worked in the past doesn't mean they won't do it again. If Detroit and Arizona can draft Roy Williams and Fitz with the WR's they already had on their rosters then I can't put it past Philly to actually draft someone who can catch the damn ball...

I don't care what anybody does except Green Bay. And I think their rankings are: Mario Williams - A.J. Hawk - Trade back. I wouldn't mind them sliding back and taking Greenway or Sims.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Eagles go with Chad Jackson or a OT if they dont trade up to get Ngata or Bunkley (who will NOT drop to them at 14 IMO like he does in this draft). LB or RB just doesn't make sense.

Cowherd hates VY because Kiper keeps saing he will be a better pro than Mike Vick(who Colin seems to have dated and had a baby with).

I think Bush #1 is solid, then its the highest bidder for #2. Presumably the Jets for Leinart. Allows Tenn to try to move down to someone who is sold on VY or Williams and NO grabs whoever is available among Hawk, Williams and Ferguson.

The only way i see the Browns taking an offensive player is if the impossible happens and either Reggie Bush or DaBrick fall to 12not going to happen

btw browns or not i can't see Chad Jackson going in the top 15, the teams just have too many needs up front to draft a receiver

2. New Orleans Saints

Mario Williams, DE, North Carolina

Comment: They have Brees, he likes their offensive personnel, needs to bone up the defense.
Mario Williams is from North Carolina STATE :hot:

He's also a DE, the one position New Orleans doesn't need.

11. St. Louis Rams

Ernie Sims, LB, Flordia State

after they just added 'spoon?
Witherspoon will play MLB. Sims would play WLB. This move would translate into Pisa moving back to SLB.Ouch...talk about the smallest LB corp in the NFL.

White doesn't fit into Philly's traditionlay receiving RB role at all...not saying he can't handle it, but it just doesn't seem like a fit.

I would be SHOCKED if the Eagles took LenDale White. They have more pressing needs, even though he would be helpful.
Well, that plus they also don't tend to draft big backs. But what struck me about this pick is this fact: the last three offensive skill position players drafted by the Eagles are, in reverse order, Freddy Mitchell :X , Donovan McNabb  , and . . . Siran Stacy in 1992  . That team just doesn't draft skill position players there.

I have a feeling that this may be where Winston Justice goes.

I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but...

Cowherd is a #####. He makes my ears hurt everytime I listen to him.

Anywho...

kook

I'd be pretty surprised if the first WR doesn't go off the board with Denver's 15th pick. After that, it's likely that the next goes 18/19, even though this seems to be a very weak WR class.

kook

Colin Cowherd is the biggest idiot on National radio.
I usually like to listen to him. Lately he is more annoying and acting more like Skip Baytool.
/derailAGREED. Man, loved his show when it first started up nationally, but these last few weeks (month or so) have been BRUTALLY BAD! Something in his cereal? Don't know, but I spend the lunch drive trying to decide which guy is more annoying, Colin or Rome. Guy needs to get on track about..uhh....SPORTS, and shove the other stuff up his you-know-what!

/end derail. Sorry.

Pretty poor breakdown as many others have pointed out. But, the thing I notice the most about the draft is; weird things happen. What we percieve as the strengths/weaknesses of our favorite clubs isn't always how the GM/FO guys see it. /shrug.

I don't know how he stays on the air here in Houston. I know a ton of people who stopped listening to 790am in his time slot.
Not in Houston... but I think his show is the best on Sports Radio. I'm in PHX btw. Of course, I only listen during my half hour commute but i almost always enjoy it.
I agree. I think his discussions are more thought provoking than other sports talk show hosts (not exactly high flattery, I acknowledge). Rather than throwing out his own opinions in the form of conclusions he actually sets out his thinking and has people challenge him.

:goodposting: Someone gave me some good advice about Cowherd - if you don't like him, don't listen. I took that advice about 3 months ago and haven't missed his "devil's advocate shtick" one bit.

Thankfully they yanked him a while back for a local show on the ESPN radio affiliate here. The guy is awful and I could not stand him...definately a huge step back from the days of Tony K.

since this is basically a "rip Cowherd" thread, I'll chime in.

Cowherd sucks, and it pisses me off that they got rid of Kornheiser for this crap.

The only time I find the herd worthy of listening to is if the guest is interesting. Cowherd adds no real insight, is not entertaining, and is a whiney #####.

I hate the DP show, but even that is way superior.

But the back we need is a power back to compliment Westbrook. We can only hope that they grab White, at least it would be a better plan than hoping Buckhalter doesn't get hurt again. I think they will get a power back, and since it doesn't look like they will be doing it through FA they will have to draft one. If they get one in the 1st round or not is another question.

Still don't think Houston takes Bush @ #1..

too many other needs..

like ESPN the Mag noted:

when your house is falling down it makes little sense to buy a Rolls-Royce and park it in the driveway ..'

or something to that affect..

Bush will wind up somewhere else, IMO..Texans already have a very good RB in Dom Davis...perhaps NYJets give them the 29th pick they got from the Abraham deal, and move up to take Bush or Leinart at #1..Houston slides to #4, and takes Brick and maybe a RB at 29? or a lineman?

I would swap Cutler and Young, and the Eagles won't take Lendale IMHO, but otherwise
Jason, do you say this because:A. They don't need him

B. They don't think they need him

C. They know they need that type player, but not in 1st round

Not attacking your statement, just looking for your opinion.

:goodposting: HERD is better than anyone out there. Maybe some people like their local yocals because they say how good the Texans are or are complete homers. That radio is pretty brutal.

I prefer the local morning show here from 6-10...with a replay of the first hour from 10-11. Wycheck, Howard, Ingram. From time to time I will listen to Kornheiser on the net who blows Cowherd away.

11-12 I listen to Rome...not that I like him, but he has some great interviews. Patrick from 12-2...though he is just mildly entertaining...but a ton better than Cowherd.

2-whenever back to local.
