The two Raiders in the top 10 help explain the current state of that team. What a colossal waste of money.

Most of those are either reasonable or can be reasonably defended.

A few of those names make me scratch my head and wonder if the GM's who made those deals still have a job.

I had read several reports that Nanmdi Asoumgha was the highest paid for the 2009 season after his new deal. (and highest DB ever) and he isnt even listed.

That listing must be a little dated. Or maybe its very current with escalators and bonus' kicking in?

You may have never heard of him and might not know how to pronounce his first and last name, but Nnamdi Asomugha makes a lot more money than you do. In fact, he is now the highest paid player in the NFL, making more than household names like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Terrell Owens. Asomugha has been signed to a 3-year, $45.3 million deal with $28.5 million guaranteed (which he will receive in the first two years of the contract). In fact, the deal could be worth more than $45.3 million if the average of the top five quarterback salaries is above $16.8 million when it comes time for the Raiders to decide whether or not the team will keep Nnam for the third year. Additionally, the terms of the deal preclude the Raiders from slapping a franchise tag on Asomugha after the 2010 or 2011 season.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nnamdi Asomugha (of Oakland Raiders) a 28 year old American Nigerian is the highest paid cornerback in American National Football League (NFL) history. In fact, Nnamdi annual average salary is the highest in NFL history, topping the $14 million annual average of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Last Thursday, Al Davis, the owner of Oakland Raiders — the team Nnamdi has played for since 2003, re-signed him to a staggering three-year $45.3 million contract with $28.5 million of it guaranteed. SFGate.com offers more information on the deal:
Per the thread title, it's for 2008.Nnamdi is damn good, though.

I always think that any list of "highest paid players" that looks strictly at actual money paid out rather than average per season is a bit silly. Why not just call it "A list of 20 players who just got big signing bonuses or roster bonuses"?

Consider the following made-up example: three years ago, QB #1 signed an eight year, $120 million deal, but 33% of the deal was in signing bonus, meaning his yearly base salary is only $10 million. This offseason, QB #2 signed a 5 year deal worth $8 million a year. He's not very good, so he only got 10% of the contract in signing bonus. Despite that, *FOR THIS YEAR ONLY*, the second QB makes $11.2 mil, which is $1.2 million more than QB #1 makes. In other words, a guy on a 5 year, $40 million deal with a $4 million signing bonus is making more THIS YEAR than another guy on an 8 year, $120 million deal with a $40 million signing bonus. What does it mean? Absolutely nothing.

Hmm...I thought Rodgers would be on there with how GB structured the deal last year giving him the up front money that counted against last year's cap.

As pointed out this top 20 is all about signing bonuses and money received in 2008. That top 20 will be totally different every year and reflect who signs a new or extended contract in that given year.

 Now the article makes sense, but the timing of the post is goofy.
How would you know how much players make in 2009? We are still playing the season and many will get bonuses.

9. T Flozell Adams, Dallas $ 14,005,760

that comes out to like 32 cents per false start!

I kid, I kid!

Thoughts: 1. Oakland is the perfect example of why being bad year after year leads to a downward spiral. Overpaying for high draft picks can KILL a team.

2. Thank God that the Bears didn't try to match what Minnesota was offering Berrian. Unreal.
