Top Blocking Fullbacks in 2009 (1 Viewer)

One of the most underrated positions in terms of its impact on the performance of RBs is the fullback position. Seemingly every year, certain RBs are helped or hurt by the addition or subtraction of top tier blocking fullbacks.

The obvious name that comes to mind is Lorenzo Neal who for years has blocked for some of the best RBs. I suspect his best years are behind him, but the guy is still a force.

Anyhow, I thought it would be useful to start this discussion, and see if there is a consensus on the Top 5 Blocking Fullbacks in the NFL. My insight on this is limited but I'll throw out the following:

1) LeRon McLain

2) Peyton Hillis

3) Tony Richardson

4) Madison Hedgecock

5) Lorenzo Neal

But I'm probably off here. Curious what others think.

Blocking FB's, running FB's, recieving FB's?

I clarified the post to reflect blocking fullbacks per your question.
Ok, then why is McClain and Hillis included? They have proven to be effective running FB's but not blockers.I also think this is a dying breed from the spread instituted in H.S, college, and NFL football. But also from an aspect that H-backs and TE's are now motioned in to block as FBs.

Lorenzo Neal

Mike Sellers

Tony Richardson

Lawrence Vickers

Greg Jones - one of the best in the league

Ovie Mughelli - beast

Justin Griffith - he'll be nice in seattle

Lousaka Polite - loves contact

Heath Evans - also short yardage guy, can push linebackers

Madison Hedgecock - nasty

Mike Karney

Leonard Weaver

Some of those guys ar getting old and some of these guys are coming up.

also, Hillis and LcClain, but both run the ball too, more than the others.

Mike Sellers should be in there. I think he is one of the most if not the most under rated FB's out there.

I guess what I'd really be most interested in getting at is which Running Back or Running Backs will be affected by the presence or absence of a great blocking Fullback.

I notice that at least 12 FBs have been mentioned thus far. Some that have been mentioned (like Hollis, by me) are not in fact great blocking FBs. Others, are.

So, curious if we can get at which RB or RBs will be helped or hurt the most by the arrival or departure of one of these top tier blocking Fullbacks.

most of the guys i listed are top-tier blocking TE's. But it alos depends on offensive schemes that each teams use. For instance, the Pats who barely ever use a lead back for run purposes.

Mike Sellers...Beat me to it. The guy is a beast.
That's my 2-6 of blocking fullbacks. My #1 choice? Ahmad Hall of the Titans. Its great that he'll likely be clearing the way for CJ3 for years to come.
I think you need to add Vonte Leach for sure, dud eis a beast of a blocker down in Houston. Very excellent. And what are thoughts on Moran Norris? I always seem to have his name pop in under good blocking FBs

He's not that good, but Gore loves him and he was the fb during Gore's 1700 from scrimmage year and earned himself his only probowl. I consider it a good thing he is back, but he isnt spectacular by any stretch of the imagination. If he can clear just few lanes, Gore can do the rest. he really doesnt need much help as it is.

cool.

But Vonta Leach definitely belongs on that list. If youy watch him...man if I was gonna have a guy run anywhere in front of me it would be him.
