Torrey Smith to the Niners (1 Viewer)

Big upgrade from Crabtree/Stevie Johnson.
I hope that is sarcasm. Torrey isn't a bad player, but I think by now we all realize he's not something special. He's also a very different player than Crabtree. However, in a vacuum and assuming Crabtree didn't lose anything from the achilles injury, I'd take Crabtree.

NFL teams appear to disagree - where's his big deal?

Torrey Smith has been much more efficient than Michael Crabtree though.

Smith should have no trouble doing more with his volume than what Crabtree did, too. According to our Net Expected Points (NEP) metric -- read more about NEP in our glossary -- Smith has never finished a season with a per target Reception NEP lower than 0.70 (which is an above average rate), while Crabtree has accomplished this average in just one of his five NFL seasons where he saw at least 80 targets.

Much of this is due to Smith's ability to stretch the field, which has been missing in the 49ers offense. Get excited for that new dimension, San Francisco fans.

He's a big upgrade in terms of what SF needs from its #2 WR in real life football. I doubt Smith has a big year fantasy wise.

Also, Crabtree was just plain bad last year. He's an average possession receiver with less than stellar hands at this point. I'm sure a great QB could make him look much better, but great QBs can make much cheaper and less hyped WRs look as good or better as well.

I don't know. I guess we can compare contracts when they have both signed, but that isn't always the best way to gauge talent.

I wouldn't put too much stock into that NEP metric. I mean, Crabtree has had a much worse QB than Flacco during his career in SF. Also, the article even states that the nature of Smith's routes lends itself to a higher NEP number, so that article really doesn't help your case.

Personally, I'm very wary of achilles injuries, so Crabtree might be diminished to the point where Smith is actually better right now. Pre-injury ability was a stipulation in my statement above.

Is there some statistical backup for this? Did his hands magically decline in ability? I've always thought he was a guy with average-ish speed, great routes, and great hands. Although that is based on my eyeball test, which I myself take with a grain of salt. I've honestly never paid that much attention to him due to his QB situation. I did snag him in 2012 in a couple PPR leagues, which paid off better than I ever expected, but after the achilles I haven't had him on my target list, much less a fantasy team.

Ranked 9th in the league for most drops last year.

 Kap has a better arm than people tend to think. Though I don't think he has Flacco's arm.

The numbers do not support this.
I feel like neither one of us has actually looked at the numbers, but I still feel safe in my assumption that Alex Smith/Kaep have not been better than Flacco. And I'm no Flacco fan.
Flacco is the most over-rated QB in the NFL.

Flacco - career 84.8 QB rating, 5.83 ANY/A, 631 rushing yards (7 seasons), 2.4 YPC.

Kaepernick - - career 90.6 QB rating, 6.36 ANY/A, 1576 rushing yards (2.5 seasons), 6.0 YPC.

And he was 7th best in 2012. But that only addresses the hands. Where do you get the part about him being an average possession receiver? Everything I've read has praised his route running.
From watching him and observing his pedestrian receiving totals over the course of his career. He's a fine route runner but he was never explosive or shifty enough to get much separation and when you couple that with his injury history and his drops last year I don't see how you could possibly call him above average at anything.

Torrey's an ok receiver, but he's not worth the $ San Fran gave him. See what he did in 2013 as the #1 receiver. He doesn't run good routes nor does he highpoint and fight for the ball.

The Ravens will miss him but it won't take a lot to replace him.

You can have Kaep and the we'll gladly keep Flacco.

I can't get too excited about this signing because the one thing T. Smith brings to the table, in all honesty, the Niners have had for the past three seasons in Vernon Davis. Davis has the mismatch ability at his position and is just as fast and the Niners never could find a way to take advantage of that.

Now, before people get on their horse and start saying "Vernon isn't as fast", let's remember that Smith was a 4.36 40 guy and Vernon was 4.38. Vernon is older now but he also has the benefit of not betting jammed at the line as Smith might and he is beating LB coverage, not Richard Sherman coverage, so I'm not being literal when I make the comparison but the general jist of the statement is "The niners have a speed guy that is a mismatch...and they NEVER found a way to use him consistently".

So why pay that kind of money?

Just as I thought, you aren't looking at the whole picture. Torrey hasn't played with Flacco for 7 seasons and Crabtree has been around a lot longer than Kaepernick has been the starting QB for SF. I believe there are 2.5 seasons of Alex Smith & Co. you are conveniently omitting.

Niners fan here and I would take Flacco over Kaepernick as well.

Torrey Smith's SF contract: 5 year deal for $40 million, including $22 million guaranteed.
He will only see the guaranteed $. He's just not that good and will be cut when they figure out that he wasn't the answer and certainly not worth that kind of $.

$22M guaranteed almost assures that he'll be there at least 3 years.
Or not. One of the easier calls. Shanahan figured out pretty quick that he's not an answer. When you have no QB, it's a really bad move to sign a low end ham & egger WR for big $.
