Torry Holt Feeling Left Out (1 Viewer)

From RotoWorld:

Asked Friday if he's upset with his diminished role in St. Louis' offense, Torry Holt said "Absolutely."

"I’m surprised," Holt said. "I guess they feel that Donnie (Avery) obviously has been stepping up and making some huge plays, and they want to continue to get him the football." Holt still thinks he's getting open, but feels phased out of the offense. There is an outside chance that the Rams will consider cutting Holt after the season and replacing him with Keenan Burton.

Source: St Louis Post-Dispatch

He should feel that way. That is exactly what is happening. The proof is in the results.

Welcome to getting old, Torry.

Seven-time Pro Bowler Torry Holt is on pace for 59 receptions and 660 yards this season — just about half of his normal annual production over his 10-year career. The Rams are going more and more to young wide receivers Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton, and Holt expressed his unhappiness at the situation Friday. Here are some excerpts:

*Are you surprised that you’re not getting the ball more?

“Yeah, absolutely, I’m surprised. But I guess they feel that Donnie obviously has been stepping up and making some huge plays, and they want to continue to get him the football.”

*Are you frustrated?

“Absolutely. When you go from getting as many opportunities and touches that I’ve had in the past to not nearly as many, yeah, there’s definitely a sense of frustration.”

*Have you talked to the coaches about it?

“No, I don’t feel like I need to speak to anybody about that. My body of work speaks for itself. I’m not going to make a stink about it.”

*Are you still the same player?

“Yeah, I think so. I think I’m still getting open. I don’t think you can go from what I did last year and the years before and just be (lousy). I don’t think it happens that way, not with the way I work and how passionate I am about the game of football. Obviously, I’m getting doubled, but I’ve beaten double-teams plenty of times throughout the course of my career.”

*Do you feel like you’re being phased out?

“At times, I do. Who knows? We’ve still got eight more games left, and we’ll see how those eight games go. Once the season’s over with, then come back and ask me and we’ll see how I feel.”

*When you are getting the ball, it’s mostly short stuff. Isn’t that unusual for you?

“It’s obvious that I’m not doing the things in the passing game that I’ve done in the past. My game has always been, I’m a vertical guy, getting in and out of breaks, running deeper routes. I’ve been doing some of that, but not a great deal of it.”

You can read more on Holt’s comments from my colleague, Jim Thomas, in Saturday’s Post-Dispatch.

All for now . . .

We haven't seen this much whining from a veteran WR since Jerry Rice decided to call it quits was forcibly removed from the NFL premises.

I haven't talked to the coaches, but I'll talk to the St. Louis newspaper about it.

Nice, Torry.

The reporter asked him. The coaches probably haven't. IMO these comments are not a negative for Holt. Every competitor wants the ball, and he is no different. Whether he deserves it or not is another question. I have only seen one of their games, so I'm not sure if he is no longer playing well enough to get the ball or if they are just choosing to throw to others. But it's hard to believe that he has fallen off a cliff since last season, given his age. He's not that old.

It will be interesting to see if the squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that. Haslett made a big deal when he took over about how the Rams needed to get the ball more to Holt and get creative in finding ways to get him the ball. That lasted for about a quarter until they saw what they had in Avery.

 I love how this is used as an excuse, as if Torry has no choice in the matter but to answer the question in the most disruptive way possible. What is he, a Chatty Kathy doll? The reporter just pulls the string and out comes a string of whiny responses about how he's underutilized?

His comments should result in the team DEFINITELY wanting to get him the ball more now............

As a genius that plucked Avery from the waiver wire(I have been last pick every week so far) I'd like to see Torry getting double coverage again.

I refuse to believe that Torry Holt is done. As a Holt dynasty owner, I am going to hang onto him. No point trading him at low value right now. If Isaac Bruce can still be productive, I see no reason Torry Holt cannot. Holt will move onto a new team next year I believe. I would love to see him land in Chi-town (Lovie knows him from his STL days). Orton has developed really well and would only help.

I don't think he comes across as whiny. He gives straight answers to the questions he is asked. And he is being underutilized.

ETA: It's not whining if he's right. Unless the team is winning... but they are 2-5.

Yea, kinda hard to tell if he is whining when you read it in print instead of being there in person.

He is simply not getting open. The team does not seem to be trying to get him the ball downfield at all. He's not beating anybody with his blaze of speed. They've tried moving him around and even though his targets consist of short passes he cannot even pull those down. I think he's just not built to play the possession role he seems to now have. Among my Ram conspiracy theories are that there is something wrong with Holt. And I don't mean he's getting old or "just lost a step". I mean, I think he obviously is getting old, but that there is MORE TO THE STORY than we know. I am thinking of the season when Coles played the entire year concealing the fact that he was playing on a broken foot.

But if that were the case, I doubt he'd make these comments, since he would know there is a good reason why he's not getting more looks.

ETA: It's not whining if he's right. Unless the team is winning... but they are 2-5.
They're 2-1 since Haslett took over and since Avery became the No. 1 WR. Right now, there's no reason for the Rams to change anything offensively.
I assume Holt's comments were not meant to address just the past few weeks but the season in general. Aside from that, are you suggesting that you think they are going to keep winning if they maintain the same approach? If so, then your statement is valid. If not, the implication is they will need to do more to get wins down the stretch... in which case, getting Holt more involved is a good idea.

Burton is the smart dynasty play right now. Avery is too expensive and Burton can be had for peanuts. Holt is due almost 7 mil in 09 and doubt he'll see it.

Wow... I just read an article last night that was linked from rotoworld and Holt was showing the utmost class, saying how happy he was for the younger guys on the team getting a shot and how he was glad that they were doing so well.

I agree that getting Holt more involved is a good idea. I just question whether that's going to happen. We're eight games into the season and there has been little on the field that indicates it will occur. And now there's another WR who is significantly outproducing Holt and commanding a larger chunk of the passing game pie. I think there are a number of factors working against Holt right now and until we see some evidence on the field things are going to change than there's no reason to believe that it will. That said, if it's ever going to happen for Holt it's probably this week. He has owned the Cardinals in recent years and this should be a high-scoring game with plenty of passing. If Holt stinks up the joint again this week I think we can finally put the final nail in his coffin for this season.

Torry can do no wrong! Yay, go 'Pack!

Has anyone seen him play this year? Is he getting open and not getting the looks, or is he not creating any space?

Look, it's not your fault, tiger, but I know their admissions policies.

Hey Tatum, you're pretty good at the cheap shots.

I guess any guy who averages 10.83 posts per day and spends most of his day every day on a message board gets a chance to really hone those skills. Very impressive.

:excited: And he knows nothing of NCSUs current admission policies, or NCSU in general, if he'd make a comment like that. How about adding something to the discussion rather than taking pot-shots Tatum? What's your deal?ETA: And yes, I went to NCSU as well.

It's not my fault. I wasn't breast fed.

He's not being phased out, he's lost a step. It's hard for any great athlete to come to realization of that fact. Look at all the great boxers, just about all of them went on too long and they all thought they could still fight like they could when they were young.

Tory Holt is still OK, he's probably better than what he is currently showing if he played on a great offensive team, but the line is less than average, he doesn't have the speed he once had and he's just not the same guy he used to be.

Next year he'll be a 7th and 8th round pick and he probably won't live up to that.

The Rotoworld blurb - like a lot of quick takes from them - is slanted to fit a quick analysis. The expanded set of quotes is still parsed.

Full quote:"I don't feel like I need to speak to anybody about that," Holt said. "My body of work speaks for itself. I'm not going to make a stink about it or a fuss about it. I'll just go with the flow."

*Are you surprised that you’re not getting the ball more?

“Yeah, absolutely, I’m surprised. But I guess they feel that Donnie obviously has been stepping up and making some huge plays, and they want to continue to get him the football.”
Full quote:"Absolutely surprised, but you know, I guess they feel that Donnie obviously has been stepping up and making some huge plays and they want to continue to give him the football," Holt said. "I try to keep some balance and play and do what I can do to help our football team win."

Subtle differences but the out of context quotes makes the tone seem totally different IMO.

There a few more examples but you get the gist of what I am saying. Like editing on a reality t.v. show, it's easy for a reporter to parse a quote to fit an overall theme.

The guy is 32. He's a year older than Burress and Randy Moss. Plenty of WRs have produced well past that age without a significant dropoff in their skills - guys like Bruce, Mason, Owens, and Harrison come readily to mind. That's not all that old for a WR and he's had 8 straight years of WR1 production. What happened between December of last year and August of this year that he suddenly got old?No doubt he's having a terrible season after a decade of uninterrupted consistency, but I think it's much too early to write him off as a has been who lost a step and can no longer perform at the highest level.

Yes I have. He is not getting open. You better believe that Bulger looks his way and would love to get him the ball...I mean...duh! Avery is enjoying the fact that I think opposing defenses are still respecting Holt. I can see opposing defenses studying film and adjusting accordingly. Holt may get some more space down the strech. And btw, Burton has looked VERY good in limited duty. He made some fantastic grabs in preseason. Grab him now and stash for dynasty.

Holt looks done. He has little burst left and is getting zero separation from defensive backs. The only big play he made this year was the long TD against the Giants that was a bit of a fluke, as it bounced off several arms and legs or something before Holt snagged it for the score. It was one of those types of plays you only see once a year.

From Sportsline:

Holt, 32, has an impressive resume. He has been the NFL leader in yards receiving and receptions since 2000. So he acknowledged he was "surprised" by his workload reduction this season. "Absolutely surprised, but you know, I guess they feel that Donnie obviously has been stepping up and making some huge plays and they want to continue to give him the football," Holt said. "I try to keep some balance and play and do what I can do to help our football team win."Holt was hampered all last season by a balky right knee, but still led the team with 93 receptions for 1,189 yards and seven touchdowns. Holt has nine consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, second only to Jerry Rice. There are no knee problems this year for the seven-time Pro Bowl receiver. "I feel good," Holt said. "There's some soreness and tightness at times. I haven't been getting as much work during games, so I'm not tremendously sore on Mondays. It's not like I'm in the training room every day getting treatment. I haven't missed a practice. I get myself ready to help our team win on Sunday."

This is what I've seen too. That TD was a hell of a catch, though. I don't blame Holt's poor production on the line. The line stunk last year and he still caught 93 passes. I do think Bulger wasn't playing very well early in the season but I think he's playing better now and he's having no problems getting the ball to Avery. What concerns me the most about Holt are:1. Avery has become the No. 1 WR in this offense. 2. The Rams are growing more and more comfortable using their young WRs like Avery and Burton.I think this is a make or break week for Holt. If he can't do well against a bad defense that he has lit up in recent years in a game that should feature plenty of passing and plenty of scoring I think it's time to close the book on him for this year. Oftentimes players get more involved after they talk about feeling neglected so perhaps that will help him as well. But if Avery goes off again tomorrow and Holt has another 3-4 catch day for poor yardage I'm not sure what other excuses can be given to the guy.
