Total Bases Pool (2 Viewers)

chet

Footballguy
I am in a pool which only runs on the weekends and holidays and you only pick one batter.  The only stat that counts is their total bases for the night.  Walks DO NOT help.  I ran a quick screen using Rotowire's projections and came up with the following names--they are in order of total bases for the year.  I have pick 20/41 so I only need 20 names.  Anyone have any adds or tweaks to the order?  I included the top 30.

If you're looking for a guy to somehow beat Trout, you have to ignore all the boring, steady guys on the list.

Springer, JUpton, Cargo, Cano, Tulowitzki

Id look at that short list of guys who are capable of 1st

Do you ever win these?  You ask for advice every year, just wondering if you have success.
Last year I didn't do well.  This year I hope to do better.

Entry is $400 and each win gets ~$200 so your guy only needs to win two days to breakeven.

in that case, i think you want someone with higher variance. so, a HR hitter or a guy playing in a big hitters' park

At pick #20, your best pick will most likely be the highest available player on this list. Either someone like JD Martinez will get skipped over due to name recognition or Altuve will be undervalued and still be available. Only caveat is if Correa is still available at #20 (which is possible) Id take him for sure. He's one of the bigger "upside" picks in that range, IMO.

at 20, i would be happy to get Bautista or Encarnacion. Thrilled to get Chris Davis.

could also consider Carlos Gonzalez, if you can stomach the injury risk (i'd pass in this format)

another name that didn't appear in the list above is David Ortiz. He's old, yes, but he's a masher who plays in a hitters park. Ortiz finished 19th last season in Total Bases.

As I mentioned last year, Tulo can't be touched in this format. He takes more Sunday's off than God

Agreed on both counts.  Who would this move up and down?

Thx
Moves down singles hitters more than anything and slightly anybody who gets there with a huge amount of PAs.  You can't get enough singles in a day to matter.  Take a look at what it took to "win" a day last year.  I'd think 8-9 bases.  Target guys you think can get to 8 bases easiest

Like oso says, move up power hitters or big offenses. Injured players are fine.

To put numbers to it, Altuve beat Chris Davis overall last year.  Altuve had 3 games of 8 bases, 0>8 bases.  Chris Davis had 8 games with at least 8 bases. I think high variance players will hold up year over year.

At 20, Chris Davis Justin Upton, Cargo

TRE and I are on the same page, except 8 vs 6. Maybe Chet know which is a better number for what it takes to win?

Also, if someone undrafted puts up 18 bases and kills all 41 guys, does anyone win? If yes, maybe push it down to 7 or even possibly 6 like TRE did

Got it (I think)...so 3 day holiday weekend, are there 3 winners or one?

Going to B-R play index to get data. :nerd:
Probably 3 but possibly 1--if the first two nights rolled over.

If the previous night ties, it money rolls over and everyone starts again.

6 is usually in the mix but will tie or lose as much as it wins.  If you don't win with 7-8, you got unlucky.  Rarely 4-5 will win.

Only players in the pool count.  i.e. Undrafted players' totals don't count.

eta:  Last year there were ~30 GMs and this year there are 41 so the winning totals will go up.

In case anyone is interested in all time leaders for games in a single season with 8+ TB:

From 1913 to 2015, (requiring TB>=8), sorted by greatest number of games in a single season matching the selected criteria
Note: There are 154 games from 1913 missing RBIs from one or both teams.

Could have given me 100 guesses and I wouldn't have pegged Derrek Lee to be tied for first.

Probably 3 but possibly 1--if the first two nights rolled over.

If the previous night ties, it money rolls over and everyone starts again.
Starts again at zero? Or do the TBs from tied nights accumulate? Sounds like zero/clean slate.

As many have concluded....yearly total base numbers aren't really meaningful.  You definitely want the boom/bust guys that can put three dingers on the board any given night.  That elevates the Chris Davis type (as the previous tables showed).  Cespedes is another good example.

I also agree with the guy that put out Miguel Sano as an option.  That guy is huge and has unreal power.  Multi-homer games should be the goal in your picks.

Another guy that I am sure will be gone early but haven't really seen a mention of is Giancarlo Stanton.

people keep mentioning that "boom or bust" player.  the statistic to look for to capture that is ISO, imo.  it measures propensity to hit for extra bases.  here are the top 30 projected guys in ISO (based on steamer projections).  a couple sleepers pop up.  obviously you want to focus on guys who will get everyday ABs so a few of these are easy excludes.

I took a lot of the above info from TRE and Peyton and whittled it down to the following 20 names.  They're kind of in order but as I don't follow baseball that closely, I am very open to additions or changes in the order--thinking about a guy like Carlos Correa.  Thanks again.

I agree that it looks like a good list for your scoring. I predict the bolded will all be gone by pick #20.

Im a little confused by the 2 Gonzalez's and a Carlos... assuming one of those is Adrian, I'd probably drop him down as I dont like him as much as the others on this list. Id also probably drop Cruz, mainly on age and likelyhood of injury/regression. Carlos Gonzalez is probably a nice pick, although Id rather have Correa. Carlos Gomez is also probably a decent pick here? In any case, I like all of the non-bolded other than Adrian Gonz and Nelson Cruz. Also, dont sleep on JD Martinez. I assume most will.

JDM presents a dilemma. Part of me thinks that anyone hitting out of the top 4 needs to be disregarded. With such a small window of opportunity, every AB is going to count, and you don't want to be losing ABs on a week to week basis because your guy is hitting 5th. Kris Bryant and Carlos Gomez also fall into this category too if lineup projections are right. What would make me take JDM over Bryant/Gomez is the inevitable V Mart injury which should move him up.

I'm by no means a J Up fan, but think he provides great value if available at 20. A 2 hitter, with his power, in front of Miggy?

JDM presents a dilemma. Part of me thinks that anyone hitting out of the top 4 needs to be disregarded. Yeah, good point on Gomez. I find it hard to believe the Tigers are seriously going to bat V-Mart ahead of JD. Who will hit 4th for the cubs?

Agree on J-Up too.

You should just give the pot to the guy with the 1st player to hit 3 HR in a single game.  It's virtually impossible but have heard rumors of it happening

I gave the list to the commissioner and he said he thinks I will get Upton. He picks after me and he's targeting Franco from the Phillies.

I ended up with Kris Bryant.  Obviously, I am pretty happy with that.  If anyone's interested, I can post the draft.

Thanks again to everyone who helped.
