Trade Causes Uproar (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I have 6 good RBs (Charles, Stacy, Andre Brown, Ivory, Vereen and Ben Tate) in a 14 man league. I tried to trade Ivory (or) Stacy and Antonio Brown for Calvin. It was accepted for Ivory, then switched to Stacy because the other guy needed a RB. A few members of the league went bananas and Vetoed the trade(s). My integrity has been questioned and no one is happy. In my opinion, the other league members refuse to allow me to use my assets to improve my team in other areas because it obviously helps me and does not benefit them. I happen to know that those in playoff contention vetoed and those on the bottom of the league did not. The VETO button does not come with any rules or restrictions, so they can press it for whatever reason they want. However, isn't the button really to prevent hugely lopsided trades from going through? Is this trade lopsided to the point of "scandal" claims? Obviously, I'm getting the better player, but I'm not desperate so haven't I earned the right to benefit from a trade like this? Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Said it once, I'll say it 1000 times, owner voting/vetoing is the single dumbest setting in fantasy football.

Get a 3rd party [not in the league] to play 'trade ref'. Commissioners can exchange with another for free. [if you want to have trades reviewed]

Yahoo public league? If yes, try using a different management software that doesn't give league members veto privilege.

Agreed with everyone. Nothing good comes from allowing owners to veto trades. It should be a commissioner's job to ensure there's no collusion in a trade, and other than that a trade, for good or bad, is a trade.

Yup, it sucks.

Had one of these this past week.

Post these articles on your message board to call them out.

Not much else you can do. My league is ~15 years old. Guys from work and every trade that's ever been tried has caused an uproar.

Just win the whole thing anyway and tell 'em to shove it.

Good luck.

I would leave this league if it was public, but it is a league of my lifelong friends.

Some of them have a Shark mentality but for the most part, they are old school and will never be convinced otherwise. Your responses have gotten me beyond fired up.

Can any of you provide concrete statements for me to take back to them so I can show them how wrong they are?

I feel like them Vetoing is the Ultimate "I'm taking my ball and going home" attitude. This is America, and we are Capitalists. If I have earned the right to better my situation, you can be jealous all you want, but to go out of your way to squash it is cowardly and selfish.

and another thing about leagues with owner veto power is it can create a VERY toxic environment. So you have a legitimate trade get vetoed - and two weeks later a trade comes through. How easy woul dit be to veto out of spite for your trade having been shot down? It is much simpler just to avoid that situation altogether.

Best parts of the above articles:

Veto the veto. You've heard me say this before, but until this miscarriage of justice is abolished, you're going to keep hearing it. Unless you can prove actual collusion, no trade should ever be vetoed. It is not your job to manage someone's team for them. Everyone should be allowed to manage their own team their own way. Even if you don't agree with it. Even if it's badly. You don't think he got nearly enough for his star tight end? So what? Not your team, not your tight end. The guy dealing him thought he got a good deal, that's all that matters. There's a special level of hell reserved for the people who veto just because it's a deal that didn't involve them or because "it's part of their strategy." That's not strategy, it's being a jerk. Win on the virtual field, not in some technocratic loophole. The art of negotiation is a skill in fantasy and is part of the game. A big part.
Don’t like the top team in the league getting another top WR? Vote the trade down. Don’t want to see the guy you’re playing next week get a starting QB? Vote the trade down. Not a fan of seeing a team get the handcuff for their oft-injured starting RB? Vote the trade down. Simply sick of one owner making all of the trades in your league? Vote his or her trades down. The list goes on and on. I could cite numerous situations where I have personally seen owners vote trades down just because they don’t want to see another team get better. There is nothing right or moral about that. Just petty jealousy and selfishness.
BTW, you'll never convince them that they are wrong.

If some or all of your life long friends did the same thing to make their teams virtually unbeatable, would you complain?

Of course you wouldn't since you're such a nice guy. :roll:eyes:

Yes I would complain. I would complain that I wasn't the one smart enough accomplish such a feat.

Totally legit trade. The way I see it, he gets more PPG out of the 2 players than you will out of Calvin but when you add in one of your other RBs you end up scoring more PPG.

Well then it's obvious you're too smart for your stupid friends. Don't be friends with idiots and find friends from the Shark Tank. Then have a league where no one will care about trades or vetoes. Seems like majority that are replying itt don't mind trades such as this...

Since you are one of the few who believe this trade is unfair, can you please explain your point of view? That would be a lot more useful than your sarcasm and "eye rolling".

I get the best WR in the league. He gets the 7th best WR and a top 12 RB (Stacy) who is head and shoulders above any RB currently on his roster. I created a strong roster, why should you (or other Veto button pushers) get to decide how I use my assets?

It's virtually unanimous that this is a legit trade. Only reason it may not be 100% is that every room has an idiot.

Sounds like you must be one of the guys from this guys league. Again no trade should ever be vetoed if each owner has paid his entry fee it's his team. Long as no one is violation team rules it should be no veto. He's building a super team so what? Aren't we all out to build a super team? That's the nature of the game

Can any of you provide concrete statements for me to take back to them so I can show them how wrong they are?

Ask why they vetoed. Then ask them, if the objective of the game is to build a strong team and win the championship, why do they feel it necessary to stop you from doing so.

Then find new friends.

Listen, they are your friends not mine. Personally this trade could go through and it wouldn't affect my life one bit. But this trade might cause some friction and strain your friendship with your "life long" friends. Whether this trade is fair or not isn't even the issue. Playing fantasy football with your friends isn't like playing with strangers. It's more competitive and there's "haters gonna hate" factor involved since there's bragging rights and $hit talking involved. So people giving advice itt treating it like a regular league aren't in leagues with close friends.

Whatever you say will not change their minds. If you don't like how this league is run, just don't play in this league and I suggest you join a league where trades can't be vetoed. Or ask to join the people itt's leagues since they're all saying they would have no problems with the trade. GL

If things were this black and white...

Obviously this guy's never played in a league with friends...

So, if "friends" leagues are more competitive, please explain why this particular trade would strain friendships? Personally, I can think of few things, short of cheating, that would cause friction like vetoes. You work hard to find a legit trade with a willing partner, just to have your "friends" shoot it down?

Also, tell us why you vetoed this trade and why you feel you have that right.

I'll ask the OP to explain the league's thinking as well. Both the OP and Mr Large Mouth are a bit obscure for credibility in my eyes. Do we just have a fishing expedition here?

In my opinion, the other league members refuse to allow me to use my assets to improve my team in other areas because it obviously helps me and does not benefit them. I happen to know that those in playoff contention vetoed and those on the bottom of the league did not.
This is what has happened forever, every time there has been a veto option. The next step is, out of spite, you veto every trade that comes up for approval.

Yeah, you should have been allowed to make this trade. Yes, people vetoed it because it was to their benefit that you didn't improve. Yes, you play in a league with a bunch of amateurs. You are too, because you joined a league with a veto option.

Live and learn.

I spoke at length to one of my closest friends in the league. We determined that we will never agree on one point. He feels that it is the right of the league to use the veto button however they deem appropriate. I cannot convince him otherwise and doubt others will change their mind either. He is also unwilling to put trades up to a 3rd party arbiter, which Yahoo does offer. I take this seriously, probably more so than the rest of them. I'll play in the league forever, but I like it a little less following this incident and the realization of drastically differing opinions.

Don't cry about it if you aren't willing to walk. Why would you play in it forever with guys who question your integrity? If somebody I knew questioned my integrity that would be a major affront with a scope beyond just the league.

Yeah, after reading the rest of the thread, you pretty much deserve it. You like the league, you won't leave the league. Accept it, because you are responsible for your situation.

"He feels that it is the right of the league to use the veto button however they deem."

That comment right there sums it up. There is absolutely no basis for logic in that line of thought. I get the same response from my 3 year old when I ask why he did something and the answer is "because." Saying they can use it "any way they deem" is childish and isn't a valid answer to your question on why it was vetoed.

These guys plain and simple are stubborn jerks. I wouldn't be throwing away any friendships over fantasy football but I'll be damned if I'd be a part of this league.

Nothing wrong with this trade but just b/c it's unanimous don't always mean they're right. The "Real Collusion" thread should have proved that. How many of you passed judgment without the rosters....that's idiotic! A case was laid out that in fact it could have been the shark move of the year! :tebow:

I'd be suprised if any trades go through in this league. If you don't plan on leaving, then you must veto every trade going forward.

It is your right to use the veto button out of pure spite.

Hopefully one of the trades that this moron is trying to pull off gets vetoed and you two might come to agree on this point.

i'd win the league... take their money poop on their lunch and tell him to go #### in their hat

vetoing trades such a jay vee move.

go find some varsity guys to play with

A better idea is to publicly identify the culprits and publicly proclaim you'll veto any trade that helps them and affirm any trade that hurts them. If that's a complicated question you'll resort to self interest. Make this completely public now, then do it.
