Trade etiquette (1 Viewer)

Is there a certain etiquette to selling a player. When being offered draft picks for a certain player, can you play other owners offers against each other? Say a certain owner offers a 4th round pick, another offers a 3rd, can I go back and tell the first owner I was offered a 3rd? And vice versa. And if more parties get involved with better offers, is it okay to see if they will beat the best offer made? Wondering what the SP thinks about this type of trade technique.

Try to get the most you can.

Bringing in other bids gives you a better chance at fair value and keeps you from being sold short.

I've been a player involved in that sort of trade, with someone playing owners off. Not only didn't i mind, it didn't occur to me it might even remotely breach etiquette. Seemed part of trading to me. It also worked, I upped my bids.

etiquette?? That is for golf..not trades. Get yourself the best deal possible. I always use leverage when I have it in trades.

There's nothing wrong with it if you do it right.

Wrong: "Would you give me a third for the player?" "Yes." "Cool. Let me see if anyone else will offer a second and I'll get back to you."

In other words, make sure he knows that you're inviting him to make an offer. Don't lead him to think that you're the one making an offer and he can close the deal by accepting.

Go for the best deal possible.

Just please don't tell me why I should accept your offer [and include the life story of the player you're trying to sell me on].
That's hilarious because I find myself doing that all the time. Half way through the email I realize how obvious it is that I am bucking up the very player that I am trying to give away. "Man, Jamaal Charles has an open door to the starting job now. He's been averaging over 5 ypc all season, now that LJ is out of the way he will be their next stud. He's also a great receiving back so he won't come out on passing downs. He was a 2nd round pick from Texas and is supremely talented. He's young and I have him on a 4yr contract so you could have the KC starting RB locked up long term. All I need in return is Anquan Boldin. I could even thrown in Manningham, who is the top 10 receiver so far this year!"I'm still cursing Todd Hayley for not letting Jamaal have a big game so that he would have a tiny bit of trade value before our trade deadline.

Sometimes there is an angle that a prospective trade partner may not have considered. I just traded for T Jones, and sure, I mentioned that his touches could fall off some at FF playoff time as the Jets groom Greene. Nothing wrong with trying to create a bidding war when selling off a player. A guy did that to me last year for Fitz. I overpaid, but did make it to the Supe (and lost). NFL teams always look for the best deal too.
