Trading draft picks in a redraft league (1 Viewer)

Anyone here have success trading a 1st and later round pick for two picks in the 2nd-4th round range? A few years ago in my big $$$ redraft league a guy with a later pick traded his 1st and 6th for a 3rd and 4th. I thought the guy getting the 1st made out, but as the season played out these two teams met in our Superbowl.

Now the owner with the #1 pick is shopping around two options for trades:

- His 2nd and 4th for someone's 1st and 6th; or

- His 3rd and 4th for someone's 2nd and 5th.

Our league also employs the 3rd Round Reversal, so his slot is at the end of rounds 2 and 3, and the beginning of round 4. I have the #2 slot so I was thinking about taking the second option which would give me 4 picks in a row in the late 3rd/early 4th, although my league is 12 team nonppr and RBs fly off the board early, so I may be left with a Daniel Thomas type as my best option when I would be up with those four in a row.

I'd appreciate comments from anyone who has done something like this before. Did it work out? Did it kill you that you didn't have an earlier pick, or that you probably had to go 2+ rounds in between picks?

Mike,

Our drafts typically take 8 hours or more because of all the trading. I've taken part in it myself, making 4 or 5 draft day moves in the past 6 years or so since we've allowed it. It's a risky strategy because a lot of times you won't know who will be available and you may wish you had maintained the status quo. I can remember three trades in particular.

The first one I made in like 2005, I was picking 7th overall and moved up to 1st overall to take Preist Holmes. All I had to give up was 7 and my 8th round pick. The league was in a frenzy of anger. Priest eventually got hurt but I stole LJ for cheap as well and won the championship that year.

The next year I moved up again to take LT at #3 overall. I had to give up more. I think we swapped 1s and 2s and I had to move down in two other rounds, like 4 and 6, maybe 15 slots total. But LT scored 31td so that worked out. Won the title with that move as well.

The last trade that sticks out happened in 2009. I picked Moss at 6, then traded my 2 and 4 for the 8th pick and took Tom Brady off his 50td season. Then in the 3rd round I turned around and took Wes Welker. I think you can guess how that story ends.

Those were just the major deals. I have made a few smaller ones, usually just to move up and get a sleeper I don't think will fall. I find there are "move up" guys and "move down" guys. I've trended toward being a move up guy but this year I pick 6th overall and if anything, I'd rather move down.
