Green Bay Packers: Driver fails physical, shoulder injury

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/p...amp;located=RSS

Donald Driver didn’t miss a game after banging up his shoulder late last season. But the injury sidelined the Green Bay Packers’ top receiver as teammates opened training camp on Saturday afternoon at Clarke Hinkle Field.

Driver failed his physical exam Friday morning because he couldn’t keep his right arm extended when a team doctor applied pressure. He’ll receive treatment and hopes to be cleared for practice in the next day or two.

“This is like doing a (field-sobriety test),” Driver said. “You think you can go up there and tell the cop you straight and not drunk and try to walk that fine line, but the next thing you know, you’re walking sideways.”

Driver, who led the Packers with 92 receptions for 1,295 yards and eight touchdowns in 2006 on the way to his second Pro Bowl, focused on adding strength in the offseason and said the shoulder never hindered him in the weight room. He said he weighed in Friday at 194 pounds, 4 pounds heavier than he’s listed.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Driver is day to day.

“I’m not concerned, because I think like all of us know that Donald keeps himself in excellent shape all year round,” McCarthy said. “This is something that bothered him coming into camp, so we’re just being cautious him.”

Steelers: Rookie Lawrence Timmons (LB) keeps hurting his groin.

Not a good thing. One time in spring and now again on first day of camp.

Houston Texans: Chris Taylor out for year, torn meniscus

ackfield help wanted

Chris Taylor's knee injury and Wali Lundy's sore back are forcing the Texans to bring in some backs for tryouts, including veterans Quentin Griffin and Patrick Pass.

Taylor, who rushed for 99 yards in the last game of last season, is undergoing surgery today and could be lost for the season.

"We were excited to see Chris this season," general manager Rick Smith said. "It's an unfortunate situation, but we know he'll work hard to come back and have a productive career."

Griffin, who grew up in Houston and played at Aldine Nimitz before going to Oklahoma, played three seasons at Denver when Smith was in the Broncos' personnel department and Gary Kubiak was an assistant coach.

"Quentin's a good guy and a hard worker," Smith said. "We're familiar with him, so we know what we're getting."

Pass earned three Super Bowl rings during seven seasons with New England. He played in only three games with the Patriots last season.

Darius Walker, rookie running back from Notre Dame, also may fit into the picture. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Texans but was waived before camp began.

Green Bay: Vernand Morency, knee injury

Vernand Morency is dealing with a knee injury at Packers camp. Coach Mike McCarthy called Morency "day-to-day" and seems to be downplaying the injury's significance. One of the main reasons the Packers don't think Morency is capable of being a true starter is because of his durability.

Dallas Cowboys: Terry Glenn, knee injury

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news.cfm?id=1...32182BD905A7166

During 7-on-7 drills, wide receiver Terry Glenn was overheard telling head trainer Jim Maurer he felt something in his right knee pop. Glenn walked off the field with Maurer and didn't return during the workout. Head coach Wade Phillips said during his post-practice press conference he didn't think Glenn suffered anything serious or would miss a significant amount of practice but, but that his status would be updated Monday.

Glenn previous injured that same knee in 2002 with the Packers, hyper-extending it in training camp.

Right before Glenn expressed discomfort in his knee - he was able to walk off without a significant limp - linebacker Kevin Burnett took a blow to the head, then subsequently suffered some neck soreness. Phillips said Burnett got "dinged," but didn't go as far as classifying the apparent head injury as a concussion. Burnett, though, appeared quite woozy and had to be helped off the field by two trainers.

McCarthy declined to discuss specifics of the injury, which was described Sunday by General Manager Ted Thompson as a contusion. The Packers' first preseason game is 12 days away, so Morency likely will miss that game.

Detroit Lions: Drew Stanton, knee surgery

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article...0059/1049/rss14

Lions president Matt Millen said this afternoon that rookie quarterback Drew Stanton will have his knee scoped to clean out cartilage. Stanton, the Lions' second-round pick, likely will be out at least a month.

Stanton tweaked his right knee Saturday and missed both practice sessions Sunday and Monday in Allen Park.

After Monday’s morning practice -- but before the results of an MRI exam were known -- Stanton said he hoped he would not need surgery.

“I’m hoping not, but we’ll see,” Stanton said. “It’s gone down significantly, the swelling has. It’s almost back to normal. I just have to kind of wait and see.”

Millen isn’t sure how long Stanton will be out.

“Keep him on the active roster and see where it goes,” Millen said. “How long it takes and how long it takes to rehab. Do it right. The knee is structurally sound. That’s not a big deal. Just a little tweak.”

Stanton tore ligaments in his right knee covering a punt against Nebraska during the Alamo Bowl at Michigan State in 2003.

But Millen said the knee was fine coming out of college and went through off-season workouts without a problem.

“When he set the one time, it tweaked odd,” Millen said. “What he had in college is not even close.”

Millen said the procedure would be done as quickly as possible.

“It’s unfortunate for the time, but it happens,” Millen said.

Gore out with broken hand

Running back Frank Gore sustained a broken right hand during the morning practice. He is expected to miss at least a week with the injury. Coach Mike Nolan said Gore will be re-evaluated next Monday.

The bone is expected to take four weeks to heal, so it is uncertain if Gore will play during the exhibition season. This means that Michael Robinson, Maurice Hicks and Thomas Clayton will get extended work during training camp. Nolan said the club could also look to add another running back to the roster.

I would be happy as a Gore owner, this means he wont tearn an ACL before September, he'll easily be back week 1 even if a little rusty

Garrett Wolfe tweaked his hamstring and has been out of practice on sat, sun, and monday.
what do you think of Wolfe (when healthy) . . . I project Peterson to get the bulk of carries should Benson go down . . . what do you think??
I think that Wolfe will add an aspect that the Bears haven't had for a decade. They have already used him in the slot and he has shown to have excellent hands. He led the NCAA in rushing last year and is actually a tough runner for his size. With that said, Adrian Peterson is an amazing runner as well, going back to his days at Georgia Southern. If Benson went down, I would look for a 50/50 split between AP and Wolfe, with short yardage/gl to Peterson and 3rd down/obvious passing situations to Wolfe. If Benson is healthy though, I see more action going to Wolfe. Just to offset Benson's power and to exploit matchup problems. As I said before though, the Bears haven't had a player like this in a long time and it is hard to say. They also plan to use Hester in the backfield some as well, so it will be hard to say right now. Preseason should give more of a look at both Peterson and Wolfe and how they could be used.

Samuels out up to a month? That doesn't seem too promising for the left side of their line. He'll be back in time for the season opener, but that's a lot of lost conditioning time and lost time to build line chemistry.
I can't argue with you on that. The left side is also of course Campbell's blind side. We'll just have to wait and see how this develops.
Obviously Samuels will be fine once back. It may take a couple of weeks to be in 100% top shape, but he's a stud LT. The bigger concern, IMO, is developing that chemistry with a new LG. Not a big concern overall, but definitely something to keep in mind and keep an eye on.

Cowboys: Terry Glenn

Mickey Spagnola, of DallasCowboys.com, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Terry Glenn (knee) has a small cyst on the back of his right kneecap, which will require arthroscopic surgery. Team owner Jerry Jones said Glenn is expected to be back in two weeks.

Broncos WR Domenik Hixon suffered a first-degree shoulder separation.Impact: The injury is thought to be minor, but the team is having him get an MRI as a precaution. Hixon can be added to the list of banged-up WRs in Denver.

Rod Smith is reportedly "a virtual given" to open the season on PUP.

If so, Smith will miss the first six weeks of the season. Smith, who some near the team feel may even be forced to retire due to a bum hip, would then be eligible return to his role as a situational third receiver. Brandon Stokley has emerged as the favorite for slot duties in Denver to open the year.

Santana Moss is again dealing with an injury to his groin/hip area.

Moss is being limited and may sit out this weekend’s scrimmage. This is an injury that is now lingering after Moss sustained a hip flexor this offseason.

Willie Parker missed practice again Wednesday, making it unlikely he'll play in the team's exhibition game this weekend.

The Steelers have been practicing longer and harder than any team. Parker has missed two straight practices and may sit out the rest of the week with "soreness and swelling" in his knee. It's not expected to be a serious problem.

Redskins RB Clinton Portis is not expected to return to practice until next week at the earliest.

Portis will definitely not participate in the scrimmage against the Ravens this weekend. The Redskins say this is a minor setback, but Portis missing almost a week of practice only exacerbates fears that his injury could linger all season. Keep a close eye on Clinton.

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots WR Randy Moss (hamstring) left practice early Wednesday, Aug. 1, and appeared to have his right hamstring wrapped by trainers. Moss walked off under his own power.

Morency may miss a month

By Tom Pelissero

tpelisse@greenbaypressgazette.com

Sunday, Vernand Morency was "day to day."

Monday, he was out "maybe a couple weeks."

Thursday morning, five days after Morency was hurt, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said his starter-by-default at running back could miss almost a month because of a sore patellar tendon.

So goes the latest twist in the mystery of Morency's injured knee.

"It's a knee strain, is what it's classified as," McCarthy said. "It's a couple weeks. It could be two. It could be four."

It was the first time McCarthy provided details about the injury since Morency went down in the first practice of training camp on Saturday afternoon. If McCarthy's timetable is accurate, Morency would miss at least one preseason game and might cut it close for the Aug. 30 preseason finale at Tennessee.

General Manager Ted Thompson acknowledged Morency's recovery could take most of the preseason, but said the team isn't interested in bringing in another back.

"Obviously, we're disappointed Vernand is not going to be able to play in maybe the first couple of preseason games," said Thompson, who on Sunday speculated the injury was a bruise. "We'll see how he goes after that. We also have some young fellows here we need to see play and need to see practice, so that affords them an opportunity."

Second-round draft pick Brandon Jackson has spent the most time with the first-team offense since Morency, acquired from Houston in September for running back Samkon Gado, was sidelined. P.J. Pope, Noah Herron and rookies DeShawn Wynn and Corey White also have practiced with the starters.

"It pains me every single day to go out there and watch those guys practice and get better and me not out there during it," Morency said. "I'm in here getting my rehab done two, three times a day so I can be out there and contribute."

For Morency, who missed parts of two college seasons because of injuries and sat out two games with a back injury last season, missing time could mean missing an opportunity to prove he's durable enough to be a featured back.

"I'm not sitting here waiting for him," McCarthy said. "I don't mean that disrespectfully to him. (Injuries) happen. We have to move on as a football team. I hope he gets back."

Pressed about the rate of his recovery, Morency repeatedly said it's "in God's hands."

"When you come in and rehab," Morency said, "you can stretch and do those type of things, do ab work, do hamstring work, get the muscles around the knee stronger, so that's what we're working on."

Lions placed QB Drew Stanton on injured reserve with a right knee injury, ending his season.Impact: The Lions say his injury was relatively minor, but the team didn't feel he would be ready to contribute this season. J.T. O'Sullivan should make the roster now and will battle Dan Orlovsky for the backup job.

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall (thigh, groin) will likely not play in the team's preseason opener Aug. 13.

Steelers: Rookie Lawrence Timmons (LB) keeps hurting his groin. Not a good thing. One time in spring and now again on first day of camp.
Bob Labriola, of Steelers.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said LB Lawrence Timmons (groin) will not play in the team's first preseason game Sunday, Aug. 5.

Plaxico Burress will miss "at least a few days" of Giants camp after suffering a sprained ankle Friday.Impact: It isn't his surgically-repaired ankle. Burress should be day-to-day.

Many players being placed on the PUP list. Among them are:Michael BushDonte StallworthGeorge WrightsterDavid GivensBrandon MarshallRod SmithTony Scheffler
Michael Bush isn't ready to come off the training camp/PUP list, says Raiders coach Lane Kiffin.Impact: Bush may not be in the team's plans for the start of the season and could stay on PUP through the first six weeks
