Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement (1 Viewer)

I don't often start threads any more and if there's already one on this topic then I apologize. This new trade agreement is on a fast track and President Obama is pushing hard for it, along with most members of his Administration. Most Republican leadership are in favor, but progressives, led by Elizabeth Warren and Harry Reid, are strongly opposed. Many Tea Party type conservatives are also opposed. I haven't heard Hillary's opinion, though I suspect she will be in favor.

I generally support most trade agreements and the arguments I have heard both pro and con are the same general ones we heard about NAFTA and GATT and all the others, in which case I take the pro side. There may be more specific arguments relevant only to this agreement, but nobody on either side is making them to my knowledge. What are your views on this new agreement?

Elizabeth Warren finally figuring out Obama is a liar.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called on President Barack Obama to make details of the trade pact he is negotiating public a day after Obama said that Warren and other critics were wrong on the facts of the deal.

But on Wednesday, Warren accused the administration of deliberately hiding unpopular details from the public.

"The government doesnt want you to read this massive new trade agreement. Its top secret," Warren said in a statement on her website. "Why? Heres the real answer people have given me: 'We cant make this deal public because if the American people saw what was in it, they would be opposed to it.'"

"If the American people would be opposed to a trade agreement if they saw it, then that agreement should not become the law of the United States," Warren continued.

I don't believe the critics do either, because all of their criticism is general anti-free trade criticism. (Including Elizabeth Warren, whom I heard on the radio today.)

The best defense of free trade I ever heard was Toby Ziegler on The West Wing: "It stops wars."

The primary criticism I have heard is how they are trying to rush it through without sharing/giving time for review. This is very problematic to me. Whether it is good or bad I don't see the harm in more information gathering, analysis, etc.

They said the exact same thing about NAFTA and Gatt. The exact same argument. And it's made for every other large bill as well. I never know whether to believe it or not.
