Transnational crime ring targeting pro players' homes (1 Viewer)

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero published a note about how the sports league issued a "security alert" to teams after "organized and skilled criminals" targeted players' homes.

Pelissero continued:

Sources say the FBI is investigating the crime wave as international organized crime. The league, the NFL Players Association and team security forces also have been monitoring the crime spree, which is believed to be tied to a South American crime syndicate. At least one other current NFL player's home was burglarized in the past week.
"It's legit," said one source familiar with the situation. "It's a transnational crime ring, and over the last three weeks, they've focused on NBA and NFL players, and it's all over the country."
...
The homes of Mahomes and Kelce were burglarized on consecutive days last month in the Kansas City area. The Minnesota home of former Vikings defensive tackle Linval Joseph, who now plays for the Dallas Cowboys, was part of a series of burglaries last weekend, according to police.
Multiple people with knowledge of the crimes said the perpetrators are nonconfrontational and do not burglarize homes while residents are inside. Instead, they use public records to find players' addresses and conduct extensive surveillance. Then, by tracking team schedules and the social media accounts of players and their families, they wait until homes are empty -- often during games -- and gain access and quickly steal items such as cash, jewelry, watches and handbags, focusing mainly on master bedrooms and closets.
The alert issued on Wednesday by NFL Security confirmed the modus operandi and offered a number of recommendations, including not posting in real time on social media, installing security systems and keeping valuables out of plain sight.

Joe Burrow was the latest victim. His home was ransacked while he was playing MNF.

Hate to say it, but if one is a heartless burglar I'd have to imagine that a pro player's home is a prime target. You know they have the expendable income for luxury items (with black market value) and you know when he and his family will be away.

The Burrow story is getting extra attention because of who reported the break in.

The person who made the call to 911 to report the break-in? That would be Olivia Ponton, an influencer and model who has appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. She said she was employed by Burrow.

People are the worst.

In my hometown, when it's possible, the police send a squad car out to sit in front of your house during the funeral of family members, because crooks scan the obits and break in during the service. I don't know if that's common everywhere? But whatever, this planet sucks sometimes.

If you're a multimillionaire (especially a star QB type making insane money), why wouldn't you have a full time security team around your property?

I'm sure part of it is wanting to feel like you have a somewhat normal life and not feeling like a prisoner in your own home.

But yeah, if I'm someone like Burrow (who is very high profile, constantly flashing luxury goods, etc), you probably need to take extra precautions. (especially when criminals know you're away)

At the end of the day, the "stuff" is just stuff. He can buy a new pair of sunglasses, new jewelry, etc. But of course, the major risk is that someone is brazen enough (or just times it badly) and a burglary turns into a home invasion. And of course, the vulnerability and fear that comes with knowing someone was in your home is something you can't understand until it happens. Scary stuff.

Aaron Rodgers said more players should use NFL resources for security.

"I will say this, the league has a really good resource, where they have security experts who will come out to your house and give you ideas about where to put cameras, where the weak spots are," Rodgers said.

"And I think guys in general don’t use it, because they don’t have the time or they’re thinking about other things or they’re busy playing video games or whatever it is. But there’s a lot of great resources guys should look at as far as the safety of their homes."

It's not like this is a new issue. It's been going on for months. It' sucks people steal. Burrow has the resources to protect himself from the same thing Kelce, Mahomes, and Portis had happen. Kinda dumb of him not to use it. In pics it doesn't even look like his house has a fence up, nor is it in a gated community.

I would think a gated community (or well guarded huigh-rise) is a must for any athlete who has signed a big contract - or a compound.

The gossip talk was trying to figure out if this is his new girlfriend or if he's really paying her for some sort of service. Ohio QBs and all...

Or a moat.

Or a moat.
Any self-respecting compound owner will have a moat. I would have two, where the outer-moat encountered has an all-you-drink tequila bar, and the second moat is filled with alligators and piranhas.

Piranhas = overrated (they actually don't usually chomp on humans). Also, wouldn't you want the tequila moat to be the inner moat so you could enjoy it without crossing the alligator moat?

See, this is why we need lawyers. To work on the finer details on moat placement.

Exactly.

Now where do I send the invoice?
