Travel - Hospitality Industry (1 Viewer)

Son with a business degree graduated about a year ago.  Now he is thinking about the travel/hospitality industry.

Any thoughts on good jobs in those arenas - or good companies?  Preferably midwest but please share outside of the midest as well

Thanks.

Is there significant enough tourism in the Midwest for him to rise as far as possible in that field?

Sounds like he might be better on one of the coasts.

I apologize if I was unclear. I merely assumed there would be much more oppurtunity on the coasts. I am admittedly not familiar with the Midwest.
There might be more opportunities, but not necessarily better ones. Just depends on which niche, skill set etc...

Tourism isn't close to being the only reason people travel and there are other jobs in the industry besides working in a hotel (such as corporate jobs, internet based jobs for travel companies, conferences, etc...)

There are lots of reports on the industry that can be found by google searches, depending on the specific information you are looking for.

I'm assuming he's changing direction from where he was originally looking when he graduated a year ago?

Best bet would be to get in touch with his school's career services office and see what they can offer. Find out which companies are coming to campus to recruit, setup interviews, etc

The center for jobs in the hospitality management sector in the US is Las Vegas.   However--I'm not sure if a business degree would get him a position as a hospitality manager as UNLV actually has a major in hospitality management that is more geared for that kind of job.   With that being said--if he is trying to start a career in that field--I'd tell you to tell him to try to target the Vegas market.  If somebody can handle the obstacles and challenges that come with the hotel/casino/resorts in Vegas--they can handle hospitality jobs anywhere in the world.   It'd look great on his resume and really set a nice path for him.

Addendum: secure a Vegas-based job from afar before actually heading there. Showing up in Vegas without a job and hoping to get one usually ends with a different type of hospitality job.
