Travel Insurance..... Scam? (1 Viewer)

If you have any decent credit cards, chances are you have decent coverage for free through using one of them to book the travel.

Like all insurance you pay for it in hopes you don't have to use it. It's not a scam, but in the small chance #### hits the fan, you bet your ### you wished you'd bought it.

Get it.  It's not that much.  Broke a tooth off in Australia and it gave me $500 toward an implant.  Another time, developed a cyst in Indonesia that followed me through India, Nepal, Japan, and China.  My travel insurance took care of all of the doctors' visits and medicine for it.

Maybe you should travel less?

My wife and I purchased it for our honeymoon.  My wife's ankle was cut badly by broken glass a week before we were to leave and we had to cancel the trip.  Saved us $12K.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret.  All insurance is a scam.  That's why they have such huge buildings on every major city.

I don't have any insight but curious - are you talking about insurance in case you can't go on the trip (like CN) or while on it?  I could absolutely see the former - I would think the latter you'd already have some level of coverage.

$12k?  I usually just have plane tickets and hotel reservations. You must have pre-paid for everything.

We usually buy it in case of us or someone getting sick or for weather.  I just got a Chase Sapphire card that includes travel insurance so I will no longer need to purchase insurance.

Insurance is an odd thing.  Like, with life insurance, you are basically going up to a company and saying "I am betting I am going to die" and this company in a huge building is saying "We bet you won't...we'll take that bet".

In general, to the question at hand, If it's out of country travel, I prep by nailing down which cards I will use on the trip and make sure I get the international contact numbers in case something comes up and I plan my purchases through the cards (usually in advance and using the cards that have the protection built in).

If it is domestic, about the only time I buy any hedging insurance is for weather factors, such as if I were going to a beach in early off season and it's hurricane season.

I usually only worry about it for the weather.  Ireland is typically pretty safe.  Probably the biggest risk is if some Icelandic volcano explodes and messes up flights.

Or he went on a cruise. Or they bought first class airfare to China. Or any number of things. I agree I wouldn't buy it for most trips, but there are definitely good reasons to have it.

My wife and I are going to Antarctica next winter and you better believe we bought travel insurance. The insurance is to cover us in case we miss a flight or need emergency medical evacuation.

Thanks guys.

They ended up passing on the insurance, but they will need car ins. as they are renting a car. Though her car ins could just put a rider on it, but he said it has to be bought there.

They should check with their credit card company as rental car insurance is lot of times built in to the CC agreement.

What's the truth behind this? Last time I rented a car the guy spewed some BS about the CC insurance requiring me to pay out of pocket for all repairs? I declined it, but I was just wondering?
I'm sure it depends on the CC. But my Amex will only cover loss and damage--which is a good deal for long term rentals because it's a per rental charge rather than the daily charge rental companies hit you with. But it doesn't cover liability which is a hell of a lot more important.

Any particular companies you guys turn to for travel insurance?  Online reviews for some of these companies are horrendous on one site and spectacular on another.  I'm shuked.

Ask Shuke.

We cruise yearly, and always in late Sept / early October (fairly active hurricane season). Cruises are funny in that refunds are near impossible. We typically buy "cancel for any reason" insurance (which also covers medical / evac / etc), and did have to use it once. Covered us with no questions asked.

I have an open claim right now with them. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Injury day of flight caused me to miss. Doctor information to support the missed flight but the flight was early AM where their customer service wasn’t open. One of the stipulations is to call and cancel, I’ll be curious if they hold to that or just give me the return flight.

I just booked a vacation and was going to purchase it but looked at my card benefits and noticed they offered both Trip Cancellation and Travel Interruption so I hope that covers it.

Had trip insurance and used it when I got a severe sinus infection while on med. cruise.

Car insurance in Ireland-->Rented a car there 5 years ago and there was some weird stuff regarding coverage.  Not sure if it was my auto insurance wouldn't cover me there, or if CC didn't cover auto insurance as it does in most other countries.

Get traveling insurance more medical emergencies.  You'd be surprised at what you aren't covered for when traveling abroad and how fast treatment hits 5-6 figures.  We have it and had to use it twice so far.  Wife cracked a molar in Turkey, saved us 600 euros.  I had an asthma spell in California that saved us $8k.  I was motivated to get the policy when a coworker broke his collar bone kite surfing in Maldives and racked up 40k that he wasn't covered for.

Wait health insurance doesn't cover your medical expenses when you are abroad?

Which company did you use?  Prices are all over the board.  Allianz looks cheap, but I see all sorts of mixed reviews.  I use Nationwide for most the rest of my insurance needs, but their travel plan cost is about double that of the cheapos like Allianz.

If it's a trip that's booked with a travel agency, they can set you up with the cancellation insurance.

Nah...booked myself.  The bulk of it is a cruise.  The cruise company offers an insurance option as well, but rates are high.  Plenty out there cheaper, just don’t know how well I trust them.

I guess I’ll just eenie meenie miny moe one of the cheap ones and hope I don’t ever need it

I'll ask my wife (I don't know) - might be right through the cruise line. But we make sure we get "cancel for any reason" - it's a little more money, but it did help us on a 5k cruise, so it worked out well.
