Trend or direction? (1 Viewer)

First off, I admit my FF fix outweighs the amount of time I spend weekly on watching the games. Don't get me wrong, I would watch as much football as they are serving with the right economic means, but I do not own the ticket, and often miss the Sunday morning games. However I will catch the night games like religion! So the games I catch generally have the most eyes on it. I also listen to the Sirius talking heads daily like other people listen to Limgaugh.

Since I am seeing more penalties called for tackles that used to be part of game, I am wondering if this trend part of a direction for the league? The fix of broadcasting revenues could lead to football as more of a contact sport and less of a collision sport. The net effect could be a type of football that is as unrecognizable as the 60s versions are with the younger fans today. You remember? When you didn't have to be a lawyer to figure out a fumble?

If you didn't get up with the ball you didn't have possession. Period. The definition of possession changed over time. Previously a play didn't end until the whistle, meaning you had to maintain possession through the end of the tackle. Is the league moving towards more of a contact sport and less of a collision sport?

I think it is. Unfortunately. None of us want to see people carted off the field, be it for respect of the athlete or selfish reasons such as a blow to my Fantasy squad. But like it or not, we will be adapting to a kinder , gentler NFL. This wouldn't be the problem it has become if players actually chose to tackle properly instead of going for the blowup highlight. Ronnie Lott, Jack Lambert, on and on were known as fierce Defenders. Go watch Lott tackle on film, look at his technique. Unseen in most of today's players. I also think it's a matter of time before we don't see Kickoffs and possibly punt returns due to the inordinate injury rise on those plays. Teams also wouldn't need such a large roster, and can save money. I think some of the implemented rules are great, like now hits below the knees, or chop blocks. Players know the risk when they sign a contract, but the league is also wrong in what was a great hit 2 years ago, is now illegal.
