Trent Edwards (1 Viewer)

He's a rookie QB from Stanford...ETA:

Strengths: Possesses good overall size. Is well-built and strong. Possesses adequate-to-good arm strength. Will under-throw some deep balls but shows good zip on intermediate throws and can fit the ball into some tight spots. He keeps the ball high, shows a quick release and solid overall mechanics. He can be an accurate passer when his feet are set and when he's confident in his reads. He also shows good natural touch as a passer. His ball skills continue to improve and he seems to be especially comfortable working off the play-action. He lacks ideal speed but he does possess decent scrambling ability for his size. He shows good initial quickness and he is an instinctive runner that consistently finds the first-down marker. He is effective when throwing on the run and he does a fine job of locating the late-breaking open receiver when on the run. He shows good toughness and isn't afraid to take a hit when delivering the ball. He continues to improve with more experience. He is seeing more of the field and doing a better job of making progression reads.Weaknesses: He is still developing mentally. Has cut down on the mistakes but still has room to grow in terms of reading coverages, locating "hot reads" and effectively going through his progressions. His footwork will get sloppy at times and his accuracy will suffer as a result. He will be late on some vertical throws and does not possess the elite arm strength to make up for poor timing. He lacks ideal mobility. Can scramble within the pocket and buy some extra time, but he's not going to be a threat to run in the NFL. Durability is a concern, especially considering his history of shoulder trouble and mild compartment syndrome (CS), which is a medical condition of tissue swelling that prevents proper blood flow to surrounding muscles. Suffered a season-ending broken right foot injury vs. Arizona (10/14) as a senior in 2006.Overall: Edwards arrived at Stanford in 2002 and was redshirted. In 2003 as a redshirt freshman, Edwards saw action in eight games, starting four. He began the season as the backup but supplanted Chris Lewis after an impressive showing in the season opener. Edwards went on to start the next four contests until a shoulder injury caused him to miss much of the remainder of the season. He finished that year with 750 yards passing and four touchdowns but completed only 45-percent of his attempts and was intercepted nine times. Edwards entered the 2004 season as Stanford's starter, started nine total games, missing two due to a shoulder injury, and was knocked out of two other games. He finished the season with 1,732 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, completing 54-percent of his passes. In 2005, he started all 11 contests and completed 62.7-percent of his throws for 1,934 yards with 17 touchdowns compared to just seven interceptions. Edwards then started the first seven games of the 2006 season, missed the last five with a foot injury, and completed 60.3-percent of his throws for 1,027 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions.Edwards made significant strides under first-year head coach Walt Harris in 2005 but injuries to his top receivers and marginal pass protection prevented him from progressing when he was healthy during the first seven games as a senior in 2006. He has the size, arm strength and quick delivery to succeed in the NFL. He also shows adequate mobility and a good work ethic. However, he makes a lot of mistakes and has gotten into some bad habits due to the marginal supporting cast. He also has some durability concerns, which will cause him to slip a bit. With all that in mind, Edwards is a "boom-or-bust" prospect that is expected to come off the board late on Day 1.

Have not seen or heard much on the Buffalo situation. Not sure how serious the injury to Losman is, either way sounds like Buffalo homers have been looking for Edwards to replace Losman sooner rather than later. Being a rookie seems like he would be a good pick up for Dynasty but re draft, not so much.

I understand Buffalo is not a offensive juggernaut, but is there any reason to believe Edwards could be a boost for the Bills even though he is a rookie?

Anything is possible. We've seen a handful of rookie QBs perform well in recent seasons (Cutler, Roethlisberger, VY). We've also seen a few look abysmal (Eli, A. Smith). It's tough to say which way Edwards will go. He's a talented player who could eventually end up becoming the best QB from this class, but a rookie QB is a rookie QB. He's probably going to make a lot of mistakes.

No. Partly it's because Edwards is a rookie. But I don't think Joe Montana could put up numbers in Fairchild's passing offense.

Five star prospect in high school. Could've gone anywhere, but chose Stanford over UCLA. Good size and arm strength. Tough kid who never quits. Had a lot of injuries in college because he played behind a terrible offensive line that got him killed on a regular basis. Mediocre production in college, but his supporting cast was simply awful. Good upside. Has the physical tools to make it. Good mental make-up. Not a whiner, a prima donna, or a moron. He'll work hard.

Definitely an intriguing long-term guy. If he had gone to Notre Dame, he might've had a career like Quinn's. He's been compared to Cutler because they both played on horrific college teams that hurt their numbers.

Edwards is a rookie from Stanford where he had his share of injury issues. Levy and the Bills had him ranked high enough that when he fell to them in the third round, they "just couldn't pass him up". He looked pretty polished in pre-season albeit against second string defenses. If Losman is out more than 2 weeks, I would venture to say Edwards has a legitimate shot at taking the job from Losman.

Remember, Levy is building this team and Losman is not one of the guys he chose. Losman is a leftover from the Tom Donahue days in Buffalo. Levy and Jauron are both IVY league school guys and Losman is far from an IVY league school intelligence. He has all the tools but not the head for the pro game.

Early reports say he is expected to miss at least two weeks. The Bills next two games are:Home against the JetsHome against the Cowboys (MNF)The following week is a BYE.And then:Home against the Ravens. It would be interesting to see what the Bills coaches do. If they have Losman out for three weeks (including the bye) and have him start against the Ravens.I expect the Bills to resign Craig Nall who they cut late in training camp to be a backup. He knows their system...(if you want to call that).

I agree with all of this.I feel bad for Edwards. He goes to Stanford where his entire receiving corps gets injured, so he's throwing to walkons, and he gets killed behind a terrible OL. Now, he goes to Buffalo where they haven't exactly protected the QB well, and he has another below average receiving corps. This guy can't buy a break. But, at least he has a Stanford degree.

Which won't get him much if his brains turn to soup.

I'm not a Buffalo guy ( though a concerned Losman dynasty owner ). Is this correct? I read somewhere ( and can't find the post ) that Losman's production in the last 6-8 games last year was only behind Peyton and Carson or something.Understanding Levy wanting to establish his own reign, but how long of a leash does Losman actually have at this point?

As a Pac10 homer I'm excited to see what this kid can do, much like Cutler he's a gutty playmaker that was stuck on a crappy college team.

Definite sleeper material...he will have a much better NFL career than Losman IMHO.

Tough to say. My understanding of the situation entering the season was that Losman would keep the job all year and that there was no QB controversy. However, the Bills are 0-3 and headed nowhere fast. Losing causes panic. Panic causes teams to make personnel switches. I don't think the Buffalo brass ever planned to start Edwards this season, but if he really impresses over the next 2-3 weeks then it's conceivable that he'll win the job. But he'll probably have to play like Tom Brady. A Kellen Clemens performance likely won't be enough to keep Losman on the bench. Realistically, Edwards owners should look towards 2008. I believe Losman is a free agent after this season, so anything can happen in 2008.

Edwards was very solid in the preseason IMHO.

But he won't be worth crap, just like Losman & Evans haven't, unless Jauron opens up the playbook. It's like he forgot passing is a part of this game. If they do throw, it's short dumpoff routes. Losman had a terrific 2nd half to last season. Many have short memories though.

After the draft the Bills told WGR550, a local radio show that their reasoning for taking Edwards in the third was that the value was just too great. The team went on to say that they had him ranked as the second best QB in the entire draft. So whether they had Quinn or Russel #1 is anyone's guess but for what it's worth they had Edwards ranked higher than one or the other. Also, as a previous post stated, Losman was not drafted by Marv Levy and **** Jauron but rather by the previous regime.

BTW, the Bills just re signed Craig Nall, who last year was brought in and promised a chance to compete for the starting job until he got hurt in pre season......

During the first half of 2006, Losman looked pretty mediocre and many fans openly wondered about whether he was capable of ever maturing into a legitimate starting QB in the NFL. Then he got hot and played very well during the second half of the season. His play during that interval more or less answered his critics and cemented his status as our starting QB heading into 2008. The Bills never brought in a vet to compete with him, nor did anybody seriously think that Edwards was a thread to his position, assuming that his play continued as it did the year before. The problem is that Losman played horribly in his first two games this year. If he wore a do-rag, he could have easily passed for Rob-Johnson. That got the critics going again. Nobody is suggesting that Edwards would actually be better that Losman at this stage in his career. Rather, the argument is that if Losman is going to revert to sucking, we might as well put Edwards in there and let him get some experience for 2008, or at least find out if we need to address this position yet again in the draft.

For the purposes of disclosure, I should say that I was a Losman defender all last year, and I was really hoping he would continue his development this year, but I have to be honest and say that I now have serious doubts about whether he has the mental accuity to play this position. He just doesn't seem to "get it" the way good QBs do. I'm not ready to give up on him, and I want to see Losman under center again when his knee heals, but I would only give him a few more games.

The bottom line is that Losman has a pretty decent supporting cast. The line has pass-blocked reasonably well for him, he has a very good RB in the backfield, and he has an acceptable group of receivers to throw to, and he's still not getting it done.

Hurt??????? FYI, he was beaten out for the backup job, period. This is a fact, not an opinion. He has been signed to backup Edwards if he is injured or plays like he did vs. N.E. when the competition is not as tough.

I too was a big Losman supporter, but in his defense, the coaches have let him down. The "play not to lose" mentality stinks. Losman had 5 pass attempts in the first half against Pittsburgh. Real hard to get in a groove when the play calling is run, run, run, pass, run, run, run, run, pass, run, run.......and not to mention the fact that Evans is real frustrated as well. They all seem to have the frustrated look, and the body language really shows it.I'm not ready to give up on JP yet, knock on wood but their are no injuries except Losman on the offensicve side of the ball. There is too much talent there to only have 2 TD's this year. None passing.....

And quick, let the Buffalo coaches know we have TE's on the team.

He was never given that chance last year either, it was Losman or Holcomb all the way. Which is why they were the only ones getting important reps and Nall was playing the 4th quater with the other scrubs.

....because he got hurt. Obviously you're all worked up and emotional today, I understand. I was just stating a fact for some in the Shark Pool that weren't aware that a.) Craig Nall was re-signed and b.) was originally brought in by Marv to compete with Losman and Holcomb for the starting job until he hurt his hamstring in the first week of training camp 2006.I'm not arguing the fact that he lost out to Edwards in Pre season THIS YEAR for the back up.

Perhaps Buffalo should have had an experienced, if not-so-great backup qp on the roster in case the starter gets hurt. An unusual concept, I know.
I see absolutely no point whatsoever in having a Kelly Holcomb clone on our roster. First of all, Holcomb sucks. Second, why in the world would we want to put a guy like that under center when we could instead give those snaps to a guy who might develop into a solid option at QB? Third, Holcomb sucks.

Because your season is already over if Edwards has to play a significant number of games this year. Remember that Buffalo came into the season expected to be a playoff contender. Whether or not that's actually so, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have to throw away the season if your starting qb goes down.

It's also over if Holcomb has to play a significant number of games. Ask Minnesota about this if you don't believe me.

I don't think anybody who isn't a blood relative of **** Jauron thought that the Bills would be a playoff contender this year. I certainly didn't.

There's no way our team can survive mediocre play at the QB position regardless. We knew our defense would be horrible, so our only hope of winning games was to have an explosive offense that could win shoot-outs. I suppose a scrub like Holcomb could work okay for a team that can win with its defense (like Chicago last year), but that definitely wouldn't have worked for the Bills.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!! This is what I've been saying all over... DJ has to open up the playbook or this team is going to be picking in the top 3 next year without a doubt.

They nearly made the playoffs last year...

Was Pittsburgh's season over when Big Ben came in and they went on to the Super Bowl? Is it likely? Hell no. Is it possible? Crazier things have happened.

This guy had a 56.3% completion rate in college with 36 TDs and 33 INT while leading one of the worst offenses in the nation. The only reason he got drafted is that he's tall. I'm finding it hard to think of him as any better than Andrew Walter.

Aside from playing in the Pac-10 and being drafted in the third round, the two players you mentioned have almost nothing in common. In fact, in many ways Edwards is the anti-Walter. Walter was a slow, lumbering passer who put up monster numbers in a soft system that has made a lot of QBs look good (Keller, Carpenter). He was an overachiever. He's a statue in the pocket. He's slower than a tree and he has a weak mental make-up.Edwards is a better leader and a more focused competitor. He's also a much better athlete. He's not exactly Vince Young back there, but he's far more mobile than Walter. As for his unimpressive college statistics, I think a lot of that can be attributed to supporting cast. He had probably one of the worst offensive lines in the country. One NFL personnel man said that Stanford's o-line during the Edwards years would've been a below average group at the Division II level. They were that bad. If that wasn't enough, his RBs were horrible and only two of his WRs were Pac-10 caliber athletes. Both of them suffered season ending injuries last year. A fair amount of decent NFL QBs don't have great college careers (Cutler and Schaub come to mind). That doesn't mean they can't excel in the NFL. Edwards was a relatively early draft pick. His preseason was nothing short of phenomenal. To write him off as a bust at this point is silly.

In other news, the Bills have signed Shaquille O'Neal as their back up QB.......
