If it's not too far for you check out Longman and Eagle.....they rent out some cool rooms in Logan Square (close to Bucktown).Any Chicagoans rent their place out on AirBnB? Looking for a 1BR in the Bucktown area for Christmas - prob 3 nights.
TIA
So very nearby and well-regarded to where you are looking for meals include Avec, Blackbird and other places along Randolph (West Loop and West Town areas). Xoco is almost fast food really and not much of a sit down place. I haven't been to Topo but it's got a great rep.Business trip to Chicago in early November, but also bringing the wife. Dinner is already taken care of for two evenings, so we don't have a choice about those (delfriscos, Gibsons). Staying at the Trump. Looking for something near Trump other than a steakhouse for something the third night with the wife. So far using TripAdvisor/Yelp I've found Shaw's Crab House, Volare, and Lou Malnatis (River North location) for pizza. Also looking at the two Rick Bayless Mexican places, Topolobampo and Xoco.
Any other suggestions? Willing to cab it if there's something we just shouldn't miss. I know Purple Pig and Girl & the Goat are already full for reservations the evening we are free. Joe's is also full, but Shaw's looks just about as good.
Also looking for suggestions on things to do at night. Went to Second City last time we were here, and definitely enjoyed that. Wife isn't into the bar hopping scene, but I saw that Andy's Jazz Club is very close by...so she might be into that. How is that place?
TIA

If you like Jazz and want to keep it interesting then check out the Green Mill. It's a little north of you but I've always enjoyed it. Great space really with a history and decent jazz to be heard. You can also try Buddy Guy's for blues. There is tremendous theater and improv comedy scene here. Steppenwolf, for example, is good for a show with dinner and drinks planned around it.Business trip to Chicago in early November, but also bringing the wife. this is like 5 mins from my apartment. i couldn't be more disappointed in this option for my neighborhood dining establishment adjacent to a K-Mart and the interstate. why couldn't they put in a lou malnati's?
That article summed it up nicely.....losing Hot Doug's, gaining Olive Garden. Oof. Glad I got to HDs before he announced the closing. This is a great suggestion, Steppenwolf has some great shows. Andy's is pretty good, if you don't feel like shuttling all the way up to Green Mill. Shaw's: meh. Hit Topolo or Frontera if you can get in. There's a dozen great steakhouses downtown with a old time feel. I've never eaten at Lawry's, but prime rib is their signature thing. If you're not into that, there are plenty of other options.Any thoughts on Lawry's? Headed to Chicago this weekend and a friend was raving about it. The old time feel looks cool but I don't know about paying 50 bucks for some prime rib.
Topolo/Frontera booked solid, unfortunately. We were excited about Topolo. Sixteen does look elite...a little too elite at $185 a person for the "Autumn Menu," if I'm paying. I have food allergies, and wife is kind of picky, so those prix fixe dinners don't usually work for us. Might get a drink at Trump somewhere to start, if we don't make it up to Walnut Room. Joe's is also booked, so that is why I was looking at Shaw's. How about Eddie V's? Currently #8 overall in Chicago on TripAdvisor (which I know isn't always the gospel truth....they get a lot of restaurants down here in Atlanta wrong). Evidently it's in the Conrad Hotel, and in addition to awesome food, has a great "vibe." (whatever that means)Andy's is pretty good, if you don't feel like shuttling all the way up to Green Mill. ETA: If you like a nice throwback experience before dinner one night, have a quick drink at the Walnut Room on the 7th floor of Macys (nee Marshall Fields). Great spot.
I don't know anything about Eddie V's, but I did just remember one place that my wife and I absolutely love: Maude's Liquor Bar. Amazing food, service and atmosphere. It's in the West Loop. Short cab ride from the Trump, or even a walk, if the weather is agreeable.stubby said:Topolo/Frontera booked solid, unfortunately. We were excited about Topolo. It's a neat experience being carved at your table...and the food is excellent, but not sure it's worth the cost.Premier said:Any thoughts on Lawry's? I've eaten there before and it's a good place on an expense account, but there's nothing that unique about it. It would be really low on my list of restaurants if I was visiting Chicago and I really like prime rib. I'd pick a place like Zed451 over Lawry's as one example.pantagrapher said:There's a dozen great steakhouses downtown with a old time feel. The good news is the K-Mart will close soon and maybe you will get something cool like a Rural King.this is like 5 mins from my apartment. i couldn't be more disappointed in this option for my neighborhood dining establishment adjacent to a K-Mart and the interstate. why couldn't they put in a lou malnati's?
i've head great things about Maude's too but all of those joints on Randolph there are good. My concern is that it could be a bit of a "scene". You know, the kind of place that Major or a young Otis would take in.I don't know anything about Eddie V's, but I did just remember one place that my wife and I absolutely love: Maude's Liquor Bar. Buddy Guys should be close. Pizza Uno and Gino's East used to divide the city on which was best, Haven't been back for a long time so I suggest you try both and make up your own mind!Hey Guys,
Heading to Chicago the beginning of March with my wife for a quick 3 day birthday trip. Niether of us have been there. We are taking the train, and probably staying at the Congress, on the south loop near Millenium park.
Is that a decent area? I have read this thread through. We are going to do a gallery, maybe the Shedd, Possibly Second City, or Buddy Guys, if it is close to us.
I want a great piece of Chicago style pizza, and if Buddy Guys is too far, then another good blues club near where we are staying. The rest we will just wing it.
Thanks in advance
Parm
Fine art indeed. You're going to be in a prime location with tons of great stuff to choose from. I'd go with Lou Malnati's on State Street for deep dish. Definitely check out Millennium Park and the new Maggie Daley Park, which is right up against it. Heck, walk back to your hotel through Grant Park and stop at Buckingham Fountain. You can walk to most of the stuff you want to do, including Buddy Guy's. Second City will be a cab ride or short brown line train to Sedgwick. If you do go there, I always recommend stopping at Old Town Ale House for a drink before or after, especially if you're into fine art.
