Trivia Time: Pro Bowl Punters (1 Viewer)

I know it's almost August and everyone is in full swing of scouting the upcoming punters and the impact they will have on their fantasy draft. I've been doing some research for a possible upcoming PFR blog post on Pro Bowl Punters, so I thought I would post some of the trivia observations here.

Since the merger, only three Punters have played in a Pro Bowl the same season their team won a Super Bowl. Can you name them?

Ray Guy did it twice... 1976/Super Bowl XI & 1980/Super Bowl XV.
Correct, Ray Guy is the slam dunk of this group. He made the Pro Bowl 6 of his first 7 seasons and the Raiders did win it twice.I'll be out for a few hours, but here is a Ray Guy spin off question. Guy made the pro bowl as a rookie in 1973. Who are the other three rookies to be named to the pro bowl as a rookie punter?

I would guess the other is Sean Landeta
I think this is right.
Landeta is correct. Just to clarify my initial question, there are 3 different punters who have won a Super Bowl and played in the pro bowl the same season since the merger, I just didn't say how many total times those three players had done it.Landeta was the pro bowl punter for the NFC in both 1986 and 1990, when the Giants won the Super Bowl. There is still one more. Hints: he only did it once. You probably need to be over the age of 35 to have any personal knowledge of him, and he didn't even play for the same team the following season.

Reggie "oh my he kicked that thing so high, the coverage team will be there by the time it lands" Roby

Did he ever do it again? Too lazy to look I guess, just seems like he played forever and on some good teams too

Who are the other three rookies to be named to the pro bowl as a rookie punter?
Shane LechlerTom WittumDarren Bennett
You get bonus points. Wittum is correct, and means that in 1973, both pro bowl punters were rookies.Bennett is correct, but due to some brain fart, I didn't have him noted as a rookie, probably because of his age. He was a rookie in 1995 and the AFC pro bowl representative.Lechler is actually incorrect to the actual question asked, but only because of a strange anomaly. The AFC pro bowl representative in 2000 was actually Bennett, he of the 1-15 Chargers and the league leading 46.2 gross punting average (some things I will be expounding on in the post). Lechler was however the first team AP all-pro selection that year, but somehow was not selected to the pro bowl. Still, a great set of guesses and bonus points for FUBAR.See, it's good I run this trivia, to find out the things that I missed, like Bennett. So, there are actually four rookie punters since the merger who have played in the pro bowl (and maybe more, keep em coming), so two remaining. One actually ended Ray Guy's run of consecutive pro bowls, the other played in the NFC Championship game his rookie year.

The Bengals Pat McInally, who scored a perfect 50 on the Wonderlic test.
McInally, as well as Bri's guess of Reggie Roby, did not win a Super Bowl. However, they are 2 of the 3 punters to go to the Pro Bowl and lose a Super Bowl in the same season--McInally with the 1981 Bengals and Roby with the 1984 Dolphins. (Todd Sauerbrun of the 2003 Panthers is the other). However, they just don't make punters like McInally anymore. Here is his career page at PFR:

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/McInPa00.htm

He was 6'6". He not only played punter, he als o spent some time at wide receiver. In fact, in 1980, he started 7 games at WR, along with punting full-time. And it wasn't like he didn't contribute. 18 catches, 269 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns, including a 59 yard touchdown reception against Cleveland on a pass from Jack Thompson.

He also had a 43 yard touchdown catch from Ken Anderson against Pittsburgh on December 10, 1977, giving Cincinnati the lead in the fourth quarter in a game they won 17-10. He finished his career with 808 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.

Given that you hinted that you had to be above age 35, that brings things to around the 70s, so I'll guess it was Danny White.

Surprised that the Round Mound of 4th Down (Todd Sauerbrun) isn't an answer though.

Weird, good info on Lechler. I looked up the guy who replaced Guy, odd to see how short a career he had.
