Troy Polumalu (1 Viewer)

Even the Monday Night announcers are saying how little he is doing. All I see are missed tackles by him (nothing new as he is caught out of position frequently). I think he only gets the attention for his ugly hair. Sure he picked off a pass last week. My grandmother could have picked off that wounded duck.

LOL, he's playing almost without his right arm.

Sure, that's why he's out of position so often in other games and misses tackles in other games. Because he's always hurt? What a lame excuse.

Fishing because I dare not to agree with everyone else? By the way, very nice avatar.
I agree he is overrated, but still a Pro Bowl caliber player. Just not the top S in the league like a lot would love to think. Either way you are splitting hairs and using a flawed data system tonight to reach this conclusion.
So who is the top S in the league then?
I would say E. Reed and S. Taylor.

I'd agree with Ed Reed. Taylor is second. Bob Sanders is tied with Polumalu after them. My point is Troy is not the God he is made out to be.

Reed and Taylor also look terrible at times, most players do.Few S's have as big an impact on the game as Polamalu. The reason he's out of position at times is because he's allowed to freelance, it's also why he makes huge plays. Dawkins is right up there among the best, if not above the rest.

Funny, here's what I wrote about Polamalu last week:

Code:
Polamalu has a way of laying low, leaving you thinking "What's all of the hype about?" then BAM!!! He makes a difference.
There's still time tonight for him to make the announcers giddy.

This posting is ludicrous. Absolutely ludicrous, not to mention uninformed. Guy's playing with one arm all but incapacitated. Top-10 DB in all the NFL. Tonight is not Troy's night - again, injury - but he is phenomenal.

Not uninformed, just someone who has seen him play alot and isn't blind. If his arm was so bad he WOULDN'T be playing. That's a lame excuse. Top-10 DB, maybe for the AFC. Sure he makes a FEW big plays in a season (which are blown out of proportion). He is made to look better by the people around him and the scheme. He still makes LOTS of mistakes between being out of position and missing tackles in games OTHER than tonight's. If you disagree, you haven't watched him much.

Anyone that thinks Polalamu is overrated simply hasn't watched him play much. Nobody looks great every game, this statement is nuts. There are few players whose talent I'm more convinced of than Polalamu and I have absolutely zero allegience to the Steelers or USC. You could probably convince me that LT is overrated before you could convince me that Polalamu is. He's that good.

This is why Troy is overrated. Many people feel this very way. As a diehard Steeler fan who has watched every game of his career. I can honestly tell you, no he is not as good as you are making him out to be here.

How is a big play blown out of proportion? Isn't a big play a big play? Kind of a dumb statement.Troy's job is to make plays and make teams focus on him, which frees up Porter, Smith, Haggans... To say he is frequently out of position is somewhat true but also somewhat expected because he often does not have a position in the zone blitz.

Sure, you might feel that he is overrated, but to say that makes "LOTS" of mistakes is absurd. Using your arguments on Troy, you must have thought Junior Seau and Derrick Thomas were horrible players that were frequently out of position. Sure you might watch a lot of football but I'm not sure you understand what you are seeing.

Dude was playing hurt! I would take him in a heartbeat on the colts! And I have alotta love for Bob Sanders!
Seriously, he was playing with one arm. One thing Theisman got right tonight. And there were lots of times he was there to make the tackle he had to literally turn his body to the other side so as not to get hit.If anything he shouldn't have started. He is in no way overrated. Ed Reed 1Troy and Sanders...tied for 2nd.End of Story.

I think there are a lot of very good safeties in the NFL right now. Reed, Taylor, Dawkins, Sanders, Polamalu, M. Brown, Sharper and R. Williams. I think Reed is clearly at the top of the list. Taylor is a notch above the rest at #2. The rest is kind of a mess. I would give the edge to either Troy or Dawkins.

Not to hijack, but based on what?

Range, tackling, recovery speed, filling rushing lanes, ball awareness, discipline in pass reads, maintaining position in coverage and making plays on the ball.

wow! You must watch a lot of game film to use those metrics as your basis for comparison!

I do.

in our scoring system, he has been a top 10 db the last 2 yrs. 2 pts per tackle, 1 pt assist, 1.5 pt pass defensed, 2 pt int., 2 pt sack, 2 pt force fumble, 2 pt fumble recovery.

Please stop blasting Weasel.

He has a strong opinion that many of you don;t agree with - but this thread was saved by some serious discussion, and it was good discussion.

I don't think he is overrated - he makes big plays at big moments. But, he IS caught out of position sometimes because of his aggresive pursuit. He does what a safety is supposed to do - often tremendously well. But, yes, he is sometimes burned while trying to make a big play. He's the safety, so he's rarely responsible for 1 on 1 coverage, but he is also the guy who is supposed to make sure the big play for the offense does not happen.

Plus, a lot of the NFL image is the flash - and he flashes. Big plays at big moments (like I said) and game changing INTs will give a safety a lot of flash. Plus, he hits really hard. He is also perfect for the Steelers' system. On another defense, he might not be considered a Pro Bowl player.

I think Troy is as good as any safety, but the truth is that safeties are a dime a dozen in the NFL. There are just a lot more people that fit the athletic mold of a safety than most other positions in football. You don't have to be 6'5", or have 4.3 speed, be overly strong, or weigh 300 pounds. So there's a large pool of people that fit, which means there's a glut of very good players at that position. The Adrian Wilson comment posted above is a good example. People must have listed 15 guys(all good safeties) before his name was even mentioned and Wilson is one heck of a safety. And there's plenty more that haven't been mentioned yet.

I do.
Sean Taylor isn't even a top 5 S. He is the one who is overhyped. Reed is the top S in the league, with Troy, Sanders, and Dawkins in the next tier.

Did you watch him play last week?? He had 4 tcks. 5 assist. 1 INT and 1FF. This week playing hurt he finished with 3 tcks.

Phew. As long as he still has that long flowing curly hair. Everyone knows without it, he's junk.

Fair enough, and as a Steeler fan you've probably seen quite a bit more of him than I. But from what I've seen he seems to always end up aggressively around the football jumping plays that I don't think anyone else in the league would have the instinct to jump so quickly, and as such I very very rarely see them beat on a play where Troy was out of position jumping the wrong route. He has incredible instincts.

Totally agree. Posting in a thread about Polamalu being overrated, that Taylor is a top S in the league almost made me spit my coffee at the screen :coffee:
